As I began to actually read the Doctrine & Covenants instead of just proof texting it for Sunday school class, I began to see more and more instances where the modern Mormon church doesn't follow their own book of scripture. Some are quite obvious, and many others require some background knowledge which is difficult to explain without some advanced level of study. I want to however present the more simple and obvious ways that the modern LDS church has diverged from the scriptures they claim to hold sacred. I also certainly tried to not be subjective as I know some things can be left up to interpretation.
The reason that I think this is significant is because if God says his kingdom should operate in a specific way or we should do a specific thing then of course we should do that. If God revels something to us then that is his will until he tells us otherwise. We can't just ignore something God told us because we no longer find it convenient. God of course could change things as circumstances permit, however if he gave us a written revelation to begin with then why not a written revelation for the subsequent change?

The Church will not apologize or even acknowledge any failure. Members, on the other hand are requested to immediately repent! I have a hard time understanding a church that says do as we say and ignore everything else….

It is the same mindset from the President Oaks quote I used in "Caring for the Poor and Needy". He said basically because the church is unique and special they don't have to help others as much since other churches are doing that. That creates an elitist mindset among the leaders and members. Why apologize if you are better than everyone else?

An issue I have had is how to bring up certain questions in church. I have had similar thoughts as some of those you’ve mentioned in your videos, and I never felt comfortable saying anything in church or to my Bishop and certainly not to my SP. I just knew that I’d get in trouble or would upset people, and so I kept my mouth shut. This situation always has made me feel kind of neutered or self-censored in EQ and in classes. But I’ve wanted to give feedback out of a desire to help, and so what I did was send online feedback anonymously through the website. Probably didn’t do much, but I felt like I had to share my thoughts somehow. It’s a tricky situation. I want to speak, but I don’t want to be labeled as criticizing or questioning church leaders. My worry has been that the church will be unrecognizable in a few decades. It seems like changes are made to line up Church positions with worldly trends or what’s fashionable at a given time. Every few months it seems the Church does something new to water itself down or apologize for or try to explain away some of its doctrine. Stances often seem mushy and as if they were crafted to be as inoffensive to current sensibilities as possible.

I totally agree. It is a hard balance to strike between attacking the person and attacking the message. I think if I am wrong then I would want someone to show me how through the scriptures and hopefully I would change. I never attack the person or anything about them, but I have sent emails to the speakers in church or the leaders indicating when they were doctrinally wrong in my opinion.

My response has generally been people who cannot comprehend what I am saying or they diminish any historical or scriptural conflict with, "The important thing is that we have a living prophet." I know a man who left his wife for another woman. He was not excommunicated and is now sealed to the other woman. I've asked a number of people what about D&C 42:75, which clearly says that such a person should be excommunicated. The general response I hear is, "Well, his bishop must have been inspired not to excommunicate him." The Lord instructs, "But if ye shall find that any persons have left their companions for the sake of adultery, and they themselves are the offenders, and their companions are living, they shall be cast out from among you."

Here is the deal I have found out so far but still working on it. The authority of the church did indeed follow Brigham and the Apostles but it also followed about fifty other men who were on the council of fifty. As usual records of the time did not specify the authority was given to only a few but later years it was "clarified" by some to mean just the twelve apostles, which is odd because higher level priests and leaders were at that council where Joseph gave all the keys and authority to all present to roll forth the kingdom...this before he died. Now.. the keys and authority are all over the place and probably the melchizedek priesthood and/or faith in Christ can create acceptable communities unto the Lord. This includes the fundamentalists, the strangites, the community of christ, and all the organizations that can trace or think they can trace a lineage of the melchizedek priesthood back to joseph (and that is pretty much everyone). Now lets unite under a faith in the BOM and Bible as scripture (including the ability to know others can have world views built on erroneous concepts within them and so can we..we are not perfect), include everyone else's scripture that is not ours as apocrypha and include everyone as our brother and sister despite what abomination we think they have committed (and have some respect, you don't know as much as you think). It is the heart that matters bros and sis. Speaking to all mormons not this presenter which btw did an excellent job. Thank you sir for your hard work.(reposted for obvi reasons)

One part of the bible that I love is how history shows it true and I try and read up on all knew discoveries. I was elated to study the dead sea scrolls found in Qumran which showed beyond any doubt that the old testament had not been corrupted as 1 Nephi chapter 13 said: "the loss of many plain and precious parts of the bible" had occurred. This is why Nephi said there was the need for "the restoration of the gospel, the coming forth of latter-day scripture". 1 Nephi 13: 26 says "after .. the twelve apostles of the Lamb, ... the formation of that great and abominable church, ... for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the lamb many parts which are plain and most precious". The notes at the bottom say Nephi made this prophesy between 600 and 592 B.C. Then 1 Nephi 13:30 says: "because of these things which are taken away out of the gospel ... Satan hath great power over them". Then, 1 Nephi 14:3 says because of this "the devil... lead away the souls of men down to hell". But the dead sea scrolls proved this prophecy is false as the scrolls found in cave 1 show the that the old testament we have is not corrupted like Nephi said. And the other caves have proven this also with more books of the old testament. Jesus said he was the "word" which was the written testament at his coming. God bless you.

I agree with you, however I think your entirely missing the point. We do assume something are true when historically we are shown they are not. However, to assume that the writings we have are the literal word for word writings of the prophets is a bit of a stretch. Just because the dead sea scrolls (DSS) had certain text that means what exactly? There is certainly a time frame between the DSS and the OT times.

Please consider that you follow a false prophet. The objective evidence is overwhelming. In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Nephi has a vision the Bible was corrupted after the 12 apostles preached it and after the formation of the “great and abominable church” (1 Nephi 13:26-29). Most Mormons believe this to be the Catholic Church which was formed early in the 4th century. Nephi claims this church was founded by the Devil to lead souls to hell (1 Nephi 14:3). So let’s objectively examine both the Bible and the Book of Mormon to be fair and test if any have errors. Bible: Today roughly 40,000 combinations of manuscripts exist of the Old and New Testaments proving them to be by far the most verifiable and trusted documents of antiquity. Many of these Old Testament manuscripts are decades and centuries before the birth of Jesus. Namely, the Dead Sea Scrolls, one of the most significant discoveries since antiquity, were discovered in 1947, over 100 years after the Book of Mormon was accusing the Bible of being corrupted. This discovery is remarkably important, especially for the Mormon, because prior to this discovery, the oldest known complete Old Testament manuscript in existence was the Masoretic Text from around 980 AD. Since 980 AD is well after the Book of Mormon claims when the corruption of the Bible occurred, it was impossible to prove the perfect preservation of the Bible and to test the claims of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon that the Bible was corrupted.

Christ indeed is the way but you shouldn't need the bible or academics to prove your faith. You can have faith in the Messiah without being a literalist. In this modern age of information, people of great faith know there are errors in scripture and work on their meaning and place in spirituality, not there meaning and place as a historical academic authority, which they are not and were not created to be. Find the real Christ within you or your faith will be lost when you find out how the bible was composed, by who, when and all its academic foibles (same with book of mormon). Scripture has been taught wrong and is not and is not designed to be an academic knowledge base. Find Christ and the Spirit within you or your faith will fall. You can "believe" your way for miracles either. Faith is not closing your eyes and believing real hard that God will make you heal. Religion and Spirituality are a little more nuanced than that. You need to realize you may not know things (this is called humility) and that scripture may not be what you thought it was, but that does not mean its not important, nor does it mean its not sacred, nor does it mean you can do wo it, nor...listen close on this one, does it mean its not from God for you to study and learn. Hope this helps you.
@peterhook2258
@peterhook2258 11 месяцев назад
also there is a real good youtube channel called , "connecting the bible". I suggest you learn about this intricate connecting so that when you find how the bible was composed academically you will not lose faith in it. As your critical thinking about mormonism will turn on itself once you learn the same things about the bible. Don't count on books for your faith. Develope a real personal relationship with God. You may have that, but you don't need a book to be literally true to have strong faith and be a good Christian. Its the heart that matters most, which is why Christ says to many who do miracles in his name "I never knew you" and has many sit at his right hand who didn't even know they had served him. Peace. Check out the channel for faith in the scriptures and their composition. Really shows the inspiration of God in them.

@@uncorrelatedmormonism No you don't quite understand but I'll try to explain it... People are only responsible and judged by their obedience to the Lord's living prophets. How could it be any other way in a Church which claims and believes in latter-day revelation? While the historical words of the both the Bible and the Book of Mormon are indeed precious to us (especially those words quoted directly from the Savior.) It is His living prophets today, who now speak for the Living Lord. And they speak to all of us you are now living on earth (or so we believe.) The scriptures help us to judge and guage, the words of those Prophets, along with personal revelation and inspiration. There simply is no other way for the Lord to direct the people of this earth and never has been. "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7) Those who don't believe this, are perpetually stuck in the Dark Ages and have only what the Catholic Church has bequeathed to them.

He is also assisting and acting under the direction of an Elder and Melchizedec Priesthood holder, who is to take the lead in all meetings (as prescribed in D&C 20:44 and 20:52.) Only teachers and deacons are specifically restricted from administering the Sacrament without an Elder present. (according to D&C 20:58.) The 1837 change in the Book of Mormon isn’t contradictory of the lectures on faith. Christ is the son of the eternal father. He is also the eternal father himself. The son because of his flesh, the father because he was conceived by god as God. It’s a “what if the father existed within our sphere of existence.” Christ is still an independent person from the father, doctrine in covenants is even clear that he exists separately from the father and always has (when it says “I was in the beginning WITH the father”), but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s identical to what the father would be, had the father been human. We were made in Gods image, so it shouldn’t surprise us that a human can both be identical to the father, while also being human.
@uncorrelatedmormonism
@uncorrelatedmormonism Год назад
It is not contradictory, but it did begin the mental shift to separate the Father and the Son. Previously they were seen as one entity with two modes however there was a gradual shift to see them as two entities with a common purpose.

@@jaredvaughan1665 There has been massive conjecture about who or what the "Spirit of the Lord" is. The Lectures say that god is a spirit, Jesus is the physical reality of that spirit, and the Holy Ghost is the shared consciousness of that entity. This makes sense to me. If we imagine God then he is a timeless interdimensional being. This is impossible to fully represent in our reality. To represent himself, in some kind of understandable form, then he has to partly constrain himself to our physical limitations. This is what Jesus is. I just don't think it makes any sense to think of the Holy Ghost as a spirit being that is waiting to get a body. Can God not do some things that he needs a spirit helper for?

At 4:27 I see what you are getting at. And there is definitely a comtradiction betwen j smith teaching and current doctrine. However, the "trinitarian" theology you allude to, would contradict the bible. REVELATION 3 states THE SON does in fact assume the throne of the father the father Ascends and those who are heirs of godhood (romans 8/psalms 82/John 10) will inherit the throne of the Son. Also the bible is super clear they are separate individuals. The .."Way" a person, such as Jesus Christ, can become "the eternal father" is through his intermediary role as THE davidic Servant. Those who play this role become "eternal Father" to those they save (who become the "children of the father) This is how God, our current father, is our Father. J smith said we aren't his "seed" he didnt "create us". He is our "Eternal Father" via the davidic covenant.
@uncorrelatedmormonism
@uncorrelatedmormonism Год назад
The main issue with all of that is there is then an infinite chain of Gods. The Book of Mormon is clear that there is only a single god. Of course definitions can be changed so we only have a single god, but then there could be multiple gods who ascend forever. I think though that the multiple gods idea makes faith in 'our' God rather difficult. Could not a higher god change things so that 'our' God needs to change things also? If this is not possible and all gods are directly in line then what is the purpose of the other gods? I personally think Joseph after Kirtland explored many things that are not scriptural and frankly not true. We get caught up in various quotes and statements when the scriptures disagree.

There are some claims made in this video that seem spot on, but others that are exaggerated. The calling of Bishops, for example, is still made by the First Presidency with a recommendation from the stake president. As for members of the First Presidency, always being a member of the twelve, that's not always true. Alvin Dyer was never a member of the 12, maybe that one goes back too far it was under David O McKay

Things have certainly been tweaked over time. Alvin Dyer, was ordained as an apostle on Oct 5 1967, then the First Presidency from 1968 to 1970, assistant to the twelve from 1970 to 1976, finally the seventy 1976 to 1977.

Technicalities don't prove anything. Apostle is certainly not the same as Quorum of the Twelve however functionally they are the same. Certainly we know that apostles have been ordained and never added to the quorum however they are almost always added so it can be assumed.

@@BrianTerrill Please consider that you follow a false prophet.

9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. Genesis 17 24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; Acts 15:24,28 Oh no, the eternal God-mandated covenant that was mandated for hundreds of years was broken by Peter just because it seemed like a good idea. Good ideas can trump God-given mandates even in the early Church. Now go be gay, drink coffee or whatever motivates you to criticize the restored Church.

You have a very interesting way of sharing the gospel.

Sharing the gospel? Hardly, I'm digging and dunging. Mostly dunging. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

Is there a logical response to these points? If I am wrong then let me know how.

Actually, Colin, I care. You asked who cares. I care when people honestly question their faith communities, their doctrines, and those things they claim to be scripture. Hopefully and in time, his search will lead him to a personal relationship with Jesus of the Bible, and away from Mormonism. Walking away from the LDS faith was one of the best decisions I ever made, and I encourage everyone to learn and pray for themselves, reading the Bible like a child, with a spirit of learning and humility.

@@MattTheBandGuy I do love the LDS church and think there is some goodness there. I don't however think they have a corner market on the truth. God works with everyone, wherever they are at.

I'm fascinated and cared enough to listen to the entire video. He makes dozens of excellent points, well cited and well presented. Do you have an alternative presentation Colin McCann?

None of this matters because everything Joseph claimed was a lie, and nothing Jesus claimed was a lie the Church and the Word (Catholic Bible) stand. Be Baptized and repent! The Supreme Pontiff welcomes you - the Church Christ founded never lost the Keys!

The Catholic Church wasn’t started by Christ it was started by Constantine a couple of hundred years after Christ was crucified. Leave this discussion to the grownups.
