34046 Braunton with The Lakelander on the Cumbrian Coast 18 05 24 

Growing up in the north-east of England I never saw a Bulleid until 1965 while staying with my roommate from college who lived beside Brockenhurst station in the New Forest. Bulleids, both spam-cans and rebuilds were plentiful even though steam was rapidly disappearing throughout much of the country. The rebuilds are indeed magnificent - never been a fan of the originals, I'm afraid.

Not a lot there these days and a very rocky shore unless the tide is far out - but picturesque and within easy reach of Whitehaven's facilities.

Mind you, the Bulleids always had a reputation for being smoky. That tunnel under Castle Hill is very narrow and single track - I bet it was a mess after Braunton had hauled it's heavy load through it.

@@schoolshorts They were yes. I think I mentioned my train from Huddersfield was delayed 8 mins by Braunton filling the double track tunnel with smoke. This single track one sure will of been a mess for some time after.

Yes I did spot that - but it was a better rake than many that we see at Carlisle. Out of breath? Never!!!

There is no turntable at Carlisle to reverse steam engines. Usually a diesel will haul the entire train down to Upperby depot where, after watering and servicing, it will use the London Road curve to access the Tyne Valley line and then reverse into the station. Several of my recent videos show this manoeuvre either from the air or from a location beside the curve. Occasionally the loco and its support coach will detach from the train and travel light. Another option, rarely used, is to utilise the curve from Upperby yard to Bog Junction and then Currock Junction on the Maryport and Carlisle line before reversing into the station. The 25000 scale Ordnance Survey map shows these options clearly.

The Jacobite was not withdrawn because of using Mark 1 coaches but because West Coast Railways has not fitted its Mark 1 coaches with central door-locking. Other companies, such as LSL, have fitted their Mark 1s with the necessary equipment. There's nothing inherently unsafe about slam-door stock - the authorities will no longer allow passengers to open the doors or to stick their heads out of windows.
