About 2 years into playing guitar I bought a Frank Gambale VHS (yep) on speed picking techniques. He literally invented the 3 note per string formula for economy picking. 25 years later I still can't do a single thing from that video 😂
It has to be said that Frank's phrasing, use of rhythmic groupings, use of technique and all is really on a different level musically- a real guitar virtuoso and innovator
He's an absolute monster. The tone that he produced in this era is also absolutely beautiful. His efficiency and clarity combined with his musicality are truly outstanding. To this day.
First day of school at MI I told Frank he will win the guitar player of the year award and he did. That was before he was sweeping 1983. Super nice guy.
By far one of if not THE MOST EFFICIENT GUIATRIST EVER. The stuff he plays is off the cuff, complex, melodically sound and he does it EFFORTLESSLY. Absolutely monster.
Had the great pleasure of studying under Frank for a year at LAMA and it was a mind blowing experience every time he taught class. He's so good it's hard to fathom. Crazy transcription too man.
Frank lived over the road from me in Canberra, Australia. His bro' Nunzio - a top bass player himself; was in my class at school. We were mates. I remember Nunz inviting me over to hear the new song Frank was playing. 'Dark Star' by the Grateful Dead (as in Gerry Garcia). Note perfect. Frank was 6 or 7 years old!!
Frank is not only a killer musician, but also a really nice guy. Had the honor of interviewing him for a podcast and I was impressed at his openness to share valuable information.
