350hp i30N! We took 6 weeks to build a GTi & Type R KILLER! Project NSPORT

From stock to time attack weapon in a little over a month :)
Six weeks ago we took delivery of a totally stock i30N and decided we wanted to pit it against some of the toughest competition on the market, at one of the most competitive motorsport events in Australia - World Time Attack Challenge!
The entrants to this event aren't merely mildly modified weekend warriors. The field consists primarily of heavily modified AWD and RWD cars with upwards of 600hp... It seems even silly to think that a little Hyundai would have any chance of keeping up with any of them right? Think again :)
With the help of N-Performance and GT Auto garage, we turned our stock i30N into a track weapon in a little over a month. Only throwing a handful of small modifications at the practical family hatch back, saw it knocking on the door of around 350hp & 500Nm, up around 80hp & 100Nm from the factory 2.0L 4cyl turbocharged engine.
Unfortunately rushing things like this meant we were basically doing testing AT THE TRACK during the competition, not exactly ideal, but we did exceptionally well all things considered.
A large part of our success was our very skilled driver, Jordan Cox - no stranger behind the wheel of incredibly fast FWDs, and certainly no stranger to Sydney Motorsport Park.
With a few minor modifications we were able to drop nearly 100kg, and add increase power by around 30% on the already spritely vehicle.
We were competing in a class where most of the competition had far more horsepower and far less weight. We were the only legitimately street legal, street registered car in the competition, and the only car that drove to and from the track every day.. Oh and we wiped the floor against every other hot-hatch, not to mention a few other sports cars that became casualties of the humble Hyundai, including some GTR's, Evo's, RX7s and WRXs.
At any rate, this very basic package we put together just goes to show just how incredible Hyundai's platform is. The entire list of modifications can be rattled off in just a few lines:
PWR intercooler & Radiator
Racechip from Ramspeed
GCG highflowed turbo
MCA coilovers
Blits FRP hood, CF splitter and CF skirt
TCR wing
XForce exhaust
Koya wheels
Circo brakepads and slotted rotors
Solar Style tinted windows & Opticoat
Yep, any average joe could replicate the majority of the performance parts from our build for around $6,000 AUD ($5,000 USD) and still comfortably drive to and from work every day (wing excluded).
Huge thanks to GT Auto Garage, N.Performance and Hyundai Australia for all the help in making this project happen and being available to answer questions at all hours. Without their help this project would never have made it to time attack.
So, what's next? Well, more power of course.. Coming to a track near you.. Hunting down all the hot hatches ;)

This is awesome. It's cool to see the transformation of this car from a bone stock I30N to a car that is capable of competing in time attack races with purpose built professional racecars. Just think of how far Hyundai has come since the early to mid 90s when they were using Mitsubishi engines, and now they're producing cars that are actually competitive straight off the showroom floor. Brand snobs everywhere! all those slating it clearly have never seen or been in one. These retail at £28500 so about £4-5k cheaper than the type R, spend that on simple mods like exhaust, intercooler and induction it will match if not better the type R.. another point on how the N is a better car is all the settings can be customised, so you can have full performance with softer suspension. In the type R you can’t individually set up the car, it’s R mode or nothing. The cornering on the Hyundai is fantastic on the British roads so until you’ve been in or own one get the facts right, it’s a lot of car for the value

I think it's a great car that is very capable and fun. Still prefer my GTI though. Interior alone in my MK7 puts the N to shame. That aside, the only way for Hyundai to go is up with N division. I'm excited to see where they go.

@pseiofosdrei
@pseiofosdrei 4 года назад
And then the Type R gets a simple Stage 1 Remap and runs 375hp, bye bye 🙈 Just stop talking bullshit, you clearly dont't know much about cars. The i30N was _never_ meant to be a Racecar. The Engine is a standard Hyundai/Kia Theta II from 2010 and is also used in many base models like Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata and Kia Optima, Sorento and Sportage. And no, it wasnt modified to run in the N models. Alfred Biermann just wanted a cheap car that brings joy to the masses and he knew that it wouldnt beat cars like the the Civic or a Megane. Thats why they never tried to break a record on the Nürburgring. It simply wasnt built to do this and thats why it is so heavy too. As i mentioned before: its a street car with a bit more horsepower for the masses and not a Rececar for the road like the Civic Type R, Renault Megane RS Trophy R or Golf GTI TCR. The Type R was built to break the record for fwd cars on all race tracks in the world and thats a big difference. Honda made a new Engine, new Gearbox, new Suspension and so on...they are simply 2 complete different cars so please stop comparing them and just enjoy driving your car 😉

One car you didn't mention is the Renault Megane. Would have been great to see you, or someone like you, do this to one 4 years ago to a Trophy R. A Trophy R is at least good for a 1:45.9 at SMSP and that's in my incapable hands. Jordan would certainly get it into the 1:30s with his skill and ability. This is only just the start of your i30N project. Scary (and impressive) to think how far you'll take it.

@StreetFXofficial
@StreetFXofficial 5 лет назад
To be honest we need more straight line speed to make up for the drag of the wing. Until a full ecu is available we are very limited to power output. Currently we're full bolt on and piggy back. Great solution for people who are chasing the extra edge, but to make maximum use of the upgrades we will need a plug in live tunable ECU. So keen to get that happening and get up to around 350-380whp. :P

Great job on that hyundai, it has been the first attemp of the brand to get into the hothatch market, they could have relased a more complete package, but it's really a good car. I could not stop watching at the car releasing black smoke, I guess that the map needs more development and they went on the safe side regarding AFR. How it was with oil temperatures? Usually stock cars with just a remap tend to get quite high oil temps at track.

Great project! The man-maths is awesome though, even better than my own. The MCA Reds, XForce exhaust and Race Chip alone break the $6,000 mark and then there's all the other stuff. And if you're a muppet like me with tools then you need to factor in fitting costs. The time, effort and expense going into this project is fantastic. Please continue with more updates with all of the different events this car enters. Looking forward to it.
@StreetFXofficial
@StreetFXofficial 5 лет назад
+Yuri Chernenko please note the exhaust is a catless system with no resonators (race only) so far cheaper than a valvetronic street one. Racechip is around $900. Mca reds run around $2500. Intercooler alone will be around $1k when released. We didn't include the cosmetic mods as they haven't got a price tag yet. It's hard to tell how much the total to a general consumer will be since most of this gear is prototype stuff and costs a lot to develop, so customers will have it easier once we get the formula down :)
@DOO00K
@DOO00K 5 лет назад
No doubt! And I get you'd have some sponsorship or promotion agreement with the various suppliers. But just for fun I thought I'd put a guesstimate together for a road registered and road legal car (and even then you'd need it engineered in NSW): MCA Reds = $2,900 XForce turbo back 3" Varex with cat = $3,000 Racechip = $900 GCG high-flowed turbo = $500 PWR intercooler & radiator = $1,200 Koya Wheels = $1,520 Yokohama AD08R = $1,400 Circo brake pads and slotted disc rotors = $850 Custom air intake with pod = $350 TOTAL = $12,620 (+ fitting) Then there are a few things not on the list like race seat, harness, Blits FRP bonnet, CF splitter, CF skirts, TCR hatch with wing, tuning, etc.

@pswmetalmonkey
@pswmetalmonkey 5 лет назад
build costs are really way off in reality, For the average person the mods are going to be at least $10k aud worth, then you are forgetting labor costs or time, which again in reality are at least another $3-5k, depending on mates rates or no tax cash deals. So really its around $13-15k aud. maybe in Aus but here in NZ there is only a $4000 aud difference between a Type R and i30n, I appreciate what Hyundai have done with this thing, however the base performance ( with the same tyres of course) of a type R is noticeably higher. So if i was ever to buy something new, the Type R would clearly win my pick. Do what they have done, and it would obviously be faster again.

Hard to gauge as most of the parts were prototypes that are still being worked on. Retail will be somewhere around there. Just the basics like fmic/chip/exhaust and brake pads will get you 90% of the way there and be less than $5k. Another $2k for wheels and tyres and you're almost there.
