My wife's 1997 Toyota Camry with 2.2L 4cyl 5S-FE motor had check engine light, failed emissions, surged at idle and light acceleration, code P0505. The problem was grunge binding the Idle Air Control Valve. Remedies I have found on RU-vid were either too vague or over simplified. Here is how I fixed mine and discovered an even simpler method you can use.

You, sir, are a GODSEND! Very clear and concise instructions. I'm NOT a mechanic; and, I'm petrified at the thought of disassembling multiple parts on my car's engine, to accomplish a task. You saved me from that nightmare. And, I believe I will never forget you, because of your singular kindness, of producing this particular video. It's given me the courage to tackle a vexing problem, that, I did not have the understanding to explain; the way my car seem to be running less efficiently over time. I was getting dismissive responses from mechanics, suggesting that because my car was old ('95 Toyota Camry), I should be resolved to ACCEPT, that, my car should NOT be expected to run well again. Thank you for giving me hope, to remain in a car that I am happy to own.

This was a brilliant and very timely video for me. On my way home one night this week I discovered that my rpm was fluctuating between 1500 & 2500 every second. I had an important commercial inspection job the next morning and my '02 Toyota Highlander was filled with equipment I did not want to have to load into a rental. I found your video and got up the next morning at 5am, followed your instructions and got to work on time! But, wait -there's more! I have put 170,000 out of the 225,000 miles on this SUV and I have NEVER had this kind of MPG before. Two months earlier I noticed my MPG had dropped to 18.6 -I am now averaging 21.5 after only my first tank of gas since the IAC valve cleaning. I believe the valve has been sticking for years. When I started the ignition on the morning of the repair the idle was stuck at 3,000 rpm. This is the single most important and satisfying repair I have EVER made on ANY vehicle and I have you to thank for it. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and for doing it so clearly -YOU ARE THE MAN!!

You were TRIUMPHANT! Yeah, most people wouldn't know where to start. Hey, we all have talents and skills, but Automotive repair is grueling, dirty, painful, and not the most lucrative trade... All mechanics go through the trials and tribulations...torn skin, smashed fingers, purple fingernails, black specks on the pillow case, the aroma of petroleum products(greases, oils, cleaners, gasoline, smoke-electrical/plastic/paint.....combustion, sweat, etc. Oh yeah, I've been the cause of some fires...even burned a shirt a few times. Getting back to you... in our lifetime we have seen huge paradigm shifts in Automotive technology. Going from carbureted engines to fuel injection. That's just one example. ...just when you began to get a grip on venturis, accelerator pumps, emulsion tubes, transition circuits, chokes, ...they are made obsolete by fuel injection. Time to go back to school. Yeah, you succeeded. MAJORLY! (... you said that it idled smoother and mpg improved). I don't know yir skill level, REGARDLESS it's satisfying.

Figured there was a problem when the engine was stalling in the mornings when the engine was cold and I came to a stop. One morning the engine stalled and I couldn't get it restarted. Did a simple RU-vid search on "'99 Camry Engine Stall Problem" and watched a video that talked about the same thing as this video but didn't remove the drain hose. This one came up next on autoplay and was more detailed. I removed the hose and worked in the carburetor cleaner as suggested (actually used throttle body cleaner). I didn't completely remove the throttle body as he did in detail but I did remove the drain hose underneath. Worked in the throttle body cleaner for about 5 minutes and drained the cleaner. Whole process took about 2 hours from start to finish and it worked like a charm on a $4 investment on the cleaner. Thanks for the tutorial!

Thanks for this! My first attempt at cleaning my throttle body and IACV on my 96 Honda Civic EX A/T didn't fix my high fast idle problem but gave more acceleration. Either I didn't clean it well enough because I didn't remove the coils and rotate the magnet back and forth fully, or I need to loosen the two screws and rotate the plate a bit CW to get the valve to close further at startup temp (the one calibrated at factory). One way or another, your video serves as a pep talk to ultimate success hopefully.

Very nice. I really appreciate not having to remove the throttle body (although I've already got it off in my garage). Flooding that little chamber by plugging that pipe is genius! I got to the point of removing those 4 screws on the throttle body to crack it apart so I could clean those little chambers, like you did later in the video, but I could not for the life of me get those screws to turn...stripped like they were made out of lead. Sooo, I'm so happy I can clean that little valve without taking it apart...you just made my day. Thanks!

Followed your instructions for cleaning the IAC but only turned the valve controller back and forth for about a minute using throttle body cleaner instead of carb cleaner. You don't need to remove all the stuff you did to get this job done though. I only needed to loosen the backside clamp that connects the throttle body to the plastic intake tube from the air box and wiggle it to the side just enough ... then I unfastened the electrical plug to the IAC. Then I performed the cleaning like you have shown. This seemed to do the trick and my idle is much smoother especially when the A/C is on. Thanks for the tutorial ... the whole cleaning took me only 15 minutes from start to finish.

It might need the car computer gradually learn and collect enough data to get the 800 rpm at idle speed.

I also have a 97 Camry that has a similar problem: Engine stalls immediately when cold starting. It happened 3 times before and the dealers always charged me about $400 to replace IAC. I happens again now, but I refuse to take it to a dealer immediately. Instead, I searched the internet and realized that it seems to be a "unique" issue with Camry. Few websites suggest cleaning the IAC and show how to do it. But I found this Zero Garage to be the best: It not only tells you how to do it, it also explains clearly why.I did not flood the IAC as suggested. I just spread the cleaner few times while continuously turning the gate axis to loosing the gunk. It seems to work because now my problem is solved for $5.00! Just in case anybody ends up in the same situation- I attempted to use an extractor to get the screw out. The extractor broke. I was going to try again but the drill bit broke. I ended up using my Dremel to cut an ugly and uneven slot in the screw. Using a flat head screw driver, the screw turned easily as if it wasn't even tight.

A great video, thank you so much! Been an engineer a long time, so I like to understand how the system works rather than just blindly follow a procedure. Thank you for explaining how it all works! I have an idle speed issue with my 2000 Camry LE (4 cyl 5S-FE engine) where the idle drops below 500 RPM and the engine stalls. But this only happens after the engine warms up. So I still need to dig into how the IAC works and see if not enough idle air is the root problem, or a symptom of something else, like bad vacuum or sensor. But you're video helped me tremendously, thank you!

Hi, I have a similar issue as yours with my 98 4Runner 2.7 it has the same IAC valve set up. Just wondering what your final results were on your Toyota? Did you do this procedure and did it help your "low idle" or was there more that needed repairs or replacement 🤔? Thanks in advance 👍

@Agate Enchantment & Rock Wizardry It worked for me. In the process of doing the repair i found holes that were letting air in behind the MAF sensor so that helped things too. But the car is on the road and running well. I hope it works for you too.

the screw heads are NOT PHILLIPS.. they are POZIDRIVE.. or ISO.. since ISO screw drivers are impossible to find.. use a pozidrive.. the bits will be marked PZ1 , PZ2, or PZ3 using a Phillips screw driver in a pozidrive may result in a cross section tear out.. pozidrive have a dot next to the cross. (+.) ps... this way of cleaning the idle air control valve works.. i normally spend the extra time and remove the entire throttle body.. after picking up a throttle body mounting gasket and an idle air control valve mounting gasket. i remove the idle air control valve and the coil winding from the end ... this allows me to really get it clean with the carb or brake cleaner.. please for those who go this way. do not remove the far end of the idle air control valve.. only the electric section.. you don't want to change the spring tension..

I believe these may be JIS and not pozidrive. Hozan/Vessel and some other companies make goosld JIS "+" screw drivers. JIS is sometimes denoted by a dimple but more modern japanese/pacific rim manufacturers may not have this dimple but are still type JIS cross head fasteners. Pozidrive would be better than a phillips but still may tear up a JIS fastener. Please correct me if I am wrong.

For my needs, the best part of this video was learning that the valve was suppose to turn. Mine was stuck at first. I have a 2000 toyota camry Le 2.2. I could not find a drain hose on mine. The valve turns freely now but for about 3 seconds it seems to stick closed on the first cold start, I don't know if It need more cleaning or a new valve. Excellent teacher and video. thanks

Wanted to say thanks. I wish I found your video a week earlier, as I already bought the new part, but even so, showing how to take the throttle body off, and that you don't have to drain the cooling system (as my shop manual suggests) means I might actually get this done this weekend. Thanks again!

While learning about TBs and IACVs, i didn't understand why coolant was even needed thru the IACV in the first place. In a toyo forum, a mech said the purpose of circulation coolant thru the IAC and TB is so ice won't form inside the TB in cold temps. Which made sense to me, since i've read that the colder the intake air the better the combustion. I guess a warm TB won't heat up the air too much, yet will keep condensed water from freezing inside. In the video you state 'The temperature of the water changes the range of motion', which is incorrect. The range of motion of the IACV gate always remains constant regardless of temp. Cheers

@tomblobasjamesc.mccollum1740
Needs oil after cleaning, spray a shot of WD 40 in there the same way you explained with the carb cleaner by holding your finger on the vacuum hose port and submerging the tumbler for a few seconds. Cheers!

I learned so much from this video. My 94 Lexus looks similar. I've had it for a little over a year. Had it tuned up etc at mechanic when I bought it but it started idling very low and speedometer would not work for a few miles when cold, and would keep giving me spark plug codes. I finally braved it and decided to clean throttle body and mass air flow sensor. Even though I did not have the time to really do it this time, and for fear of breaking another hose, at least I learned what that notch was for and cleaned it somewhat. Anyway, the throttle body was horribly filthy so I can imagine that air control valve thingy, and the air filter. The car runs 90% better and I will take that part off next time when I can have someone with another car just in case. It did give me a weird code that just would not come off, I think a PO773. After finally arriving home after 74 miles, I turned car off, took key out then put key back in and just turned it to on without cranking and left key in for almost a minute and took key out and restarted car and code came off and did not come off. Thank you so much. I am a woman and could not afford a mechanic at this time or most other times

And the mechanics, don't know which, must have broken the part of the air intake hose that is connected to it so I had to crazy glue it at least for now. And of course they didn't tell me because that is not a cheap part

Well Done! I cleaned out my IAC valve your shorthand way for ~5 minutes and noticed a difference in car shake reduction when the air conditioner is turned on. I used "CRC Thottle Body and Air-Intake Cleaner". Thanks for your helpful video! For anyone who had issues removing screw(s), I stripped the head off of one of the screws using an impact driver but I managed to remove it with "Vermont American #2 screw extractor (package says it's supposed to be used in conjunction with a 7/64" 2.8mm drill bit). Prior to using that extractor I had tried easy outs as well as left hand drill bits to no avail. When you feel your drill hesitate your probably close to extracting the screw.

Yes, those screw heads are very soft and easy to strip. Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt.

Great video ! Don't let a mechanic replace the IAC valve without trying this first. The new valve is over $200 ! If you don't have the hose that connects to the crankcase don't attempt to clean the IAC while it's on the engine. All the cleaner and chunks of carbon will be sucked right into the motor the first time you start the engine. Take the throttle body off the engine first. I rebuilt my niece's 2001 Camry's 2.2L engine. The car had been sitting dead for over 2 years. After the rebuild the engine ran great, but idled too fast once warm. I found the IAC had locked up with carbon AND the motor's windings were open. (I should have checked that all out during the rebuild.) There are 3 terminals to the IAC motor. Measuring the resistance between the middle and either of the outer terminals should result between 16 and 23 ohms (depending on the application). Mine were 56k one side and completely open on the other. I'm off the the junkyard !

At 2:39 shouldn't there be a black o ring that seats against the circular area surrounding the magnet/shaft? Aside from that, I just used this same procedure on 2001 2nd gen avalon 1mz-fe, only difference was that the metal hose nipple that needs to be blocked is right underneath the spinning magnet, this nipple is angled and easy to access, I used a spare nitrile glove to block the nipple and then let the carb cleaner leak into the inside of the glove to dispose. p.s. as someone who loves learning about "why" and not just "how" to handle a procedure you have been one of the best explainers I have came across. Thanks for your time & insight sir!
