Thank you for sharing this process, Rob. I'm glad to see you getting active here again. It was well presented, and the adjustments are a real world situation that we can learn from.
I have followed this video 3 times now. Works well. I found out by accident today, instead of baking the distortion and dragging text manually, if you right click the edge of the distorted text, you can insert points then make fine adjustment to the left edge a lot easier.
Thanks for watching!!! Actually... when I did the video, I was not familiar with the "Bounding Box" option for distorting an object. In many cases (especially when you want to distort all 4 sides), it is the best option. It does not feel as natural setting up an object, but in the end, it is better and faster.
This looks amazing Sir, thank you very much for showing how to go through the process. This is something that I have been wanting to try, so now I don't have any excuses. Job well done. I remembered your comment sharing on the Dave Gatton Saturday night show a few years ago and for some reason I remembered you sharing some neat thoughts and ideas, but don't ask what I remembered. Thanks a bunch. Andrew 👍 gotta subscribe!
Make sure you watch this video too. My video works great for distorting the top and bottom, but a bounding box might make more sense if you want to edit the left and right side too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ch_8MiTjDgQ.html
Great instructional video! I have made two of these now and have only been using the CNC for a month. One question. How would one go about importing a bitmap to this project without having to carve the underlying background? Was able to import, however, the V carve wanted to carve the background (zero plane) of the image as well.
Thanks. Since doing this video, I have decided that the distortion bounding box might be an even better option. Some bitmap files are better than others. Unless they have pure black and white contrast, and are higher definition, then I have not had great luck. Mark Lindsay probably has the best videos I have seen on importing and editing bitmaps.
Hey Rob, lovely video. When carving on the CNC, how do I get the Z-Axis to follow the pattern of the wood knowing it will be in a gradient/wave format? I know it depends on my shape height and base height. You did an excellent video, but you did not show the actual product. I'm having trouble with my project where some letters are deep and some are shallow.
Great video, Rob! I heard about it from Mark Lindsay, and I'm glad I did. One question. You mention that you have a 45 degree bit that is pretty sharply pointed. I'm having trouble finding one. What bit do you use? Thanks.
something like this: www.amazon.com/SainSmart-Genmitsu-Engraving-Degree-Conical/dp/B07P99F3L1/ref=sr_1_2?crid=WFXPB38YW50Y&dchild=1&keywords=cnc+v+bit+1%2F8+shank&qid=1592366029&sprefix=1%2F8+cnc+v%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-2
Fantastic howto Rob. Thanks!! At 23.50, you missed the inside of the letter e in the word sed, last line of the left page, so if you got a bad carving ( in case you really carved it), you'll know why.
Nice catch. I saw that error when I was editing the video, but I was not in the mood to shoot it again. I probably should have added some text on the video to point that out.
Good Morning Rob In your video in the component property you used a positive .7 as the shape height and a negative .125 for the Base height. I am using .750 material and getting results where the book cover edge is really thin. could you explain how these two numbers work together. I just started working with Aspire about 6 weeks ago.
to be totally honest, I don't understand how those numbers work in the end. I do a lot of trail and error to get it right. Example of how I do this: put in values that I think should work, then create tool paths for this and do a preview of the cut. put the cursor on different areas of the cut, and then on the bottom right of the screen you can see the values for X Y & Z. I watch the Z value for the highest point and the lowest point. If I don't like what I am getting I make changes to the modeling tab till I get it right. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it is the best I can do.
yes - you must bake the distortion first (19:30 in the video). At that point each letter is an individual vector and you can do whatever you want to it. There is no magic bullet that will recalculate everything after you change some spelling.
RU-vid does not allow images in the comments. I have a facebook page for some of my cnc projects. You will need to go way back, but there is one on there from June 2018. facebook.com/SawCNC
Not quite sure of the context of your question. Press n, and that should take you out of node editing, or just click somewhere else. I made this video 4 years ago, and since then I have realized that the method works great for distorting/editing the top and bottom, but if you want to do all 4 sides, bounding box is a better option (in youtube, search: vcarve bounding box distort, and you should find several good videos).
