I would really enjoy a extra clip of the project being made or even a picture showing the end result with some cometary of what you learned. 🙂 I recently got a GlowForge Pro to make addition income on the side and I’m in the learning process too. Very helpful thank you

Hi Jacob, I will see about adding that to the video. This was a video I created in response to posting the final project pictures on the Facebook group "Glowforge with Silhouette Studio" and I suggest checking out the group to learn more and see all the awesome things being made by everyone!

I saw this video long ago but knew I didn’t need it yet. Tonight I had the perfect opportunity to use it. Thank god I remembered it. Thanks again mentor. 😃👏🏻❤️

Hey, you're welcome! This was one of my early videos seems like so long ago for me too 😁

I am so thrilled to have found this video and know that I can design in Silhouette Studio to use for my Glowforge, because I know that program. My question is how do you know how deep the engravings will be, I know you used different colors but that doesn't make sense to me. I'm brand new to using my Glowforge so if there is somewhere I can go to learn more that would be great. Thanks again for your video.

The depth will depend on the material you are using. It would be something that would have to be tested on the particular material because GF doesn't have a way to set a measurement for depth of engraving. Could always do a test area on the material using different speed&power combos until you get the look you're going for.

@@LadyCrockettCrafts This is such a helpful video! To add to the above question, when you pick your colors, how do you know that one color (black) will engrave deeper than another color (grey). Is it the darker the color, the deeper the engrave? Thanks!
@LadyCrockettCrafts
@LadyCrockettCrafts 4 года назад
@@aborges009 yes, for a 3D engrave the darker color engraves deeper. For a regular engrave, the darkness of the color does not matter.

I am new to GF, still waiting on it to arrive, but had a question on this video. You made the word MULLIGAN white so it would not be engraved, but when you sent it to the GF it appeared to be black on the screen. I am assuming it cut/engraved correctly, so why didn’t it leave the colors as you had them?

The colors in Glowforge are always going to be the same no matter what color I make them. It only does red for cut and teal/purple for engrave/ score. My coloring is just so it knows to break up the functions and it translates it . It'll make more sense when you can get in there and play with it :)

I understand you have to change the colors to get it to engrave at different heights, but how do you choose those heights? Like, you said you want the black background to be the most engraved, how does it know that the color black is the most engraved and not the raised portion? And how does it know how deep to engrave it?
@LadyCrockettCrafts

There is no way to know or control the depth it will actually engrave each color. You could figure it out by testing it with your material if you wanted to get more precise. Thinking out loud- you could set up rectangles of each color, get them to engrave at the edge of the board, then use calibers to compare how deep each engraved compared to a none engraved area. It is all just relative to each other, the darkest will be the deepest and lightest will be least engraved with white being none. I hope that answers your question 🙃

So if I had an object that I wanted to engrave at different heights, with the middle being the tallest and then tiers going down deeper to the end of the object, I would just make the middle white, then use darker shades of gray going down the levels and then use black as my last and lowest level?
@LadyCrockettCrafts
@LadyCrockettCrafts 4 года назад
@@brette166 yes, if you have a design program that can do a gradient then you will get a smooth sloping transition, otherwise it is going to be more like the tiers/steps. I would try it in a small area to make sure you're getting the effect you want because there may not be a noticeable difference between each color if you need a lot of tiers.

there is a tab that shows scale and size..you can lock it or not..took me months before i figured that out lol

That's a good tip! This video is so old that feature wasn't around back then 😳 it's so much easier to align things now with that tool, glad they added it!

Did you figure out how to center it yet? in glowforge? and did you have any other methods you might have learned in doing differently in silhouette ?

I figured out that there is not currently a way for the GF to engrave with the 3D engrave option and also cut it out, it has to be 2 files. Hopefully there will be a way to do so in the future. Right now you can only cut with an svg file and the 3D engrave with png or jpg.

I was wondering if you could help me. I'm new, I just got my GF last week. I'm still learning. Can you tell me how to not engrave out the center of letters like AaBbDdegOoPpQq. It's probably a simple fix I just can't figure it out.
@LadyCrockettCrafts
@LadyCrockettCrafts 4 года назад
I have lots of potential answers to this question, but not sure which fits the problem you are having. 1. If the center of your letters are also engraving, I would make sure your words are a compound path. 2. If you mean the center of the letters are falling out because you're cutting, then you'll need to use the knife tool to create a "bridge" that connects the center of the letter to the other portion of material that will remain. Sounds a little complicated not knowing more, but feel free to send an email and photos of the issue to ladycrockettcrafts@gmail.com so I can help you better.
