RC Airboats are cool. Not only they are simple build, but also give a lot of fun while playing with. This year I built a 3D printed one. No depron, no foam. Just a 3D printer and some lightweight PLA filament. And this is how it went.
Spoiler alert: this design wants to dive and it was not intentional.

The motor seems to be pushing the bow down due to the moment arm caused by the thrust line. Tipping the motor forward to align the thrust line with the center of buoyancy would probably help.

Well, even conventional PLA isn't exactly waterproof, Pawel. People who usually 3d print boats use other materials, or apply a thin coat of epoxy... Sometimes even glass fiber. Another thing is the spray foam, I don't remember the name... They fill the hull with it with the exception of the places for battery and electronics. I don't know close to enough about boats... But there you go, that's what I know. 😬 But, absolutely, improve it! Keep going! 😃 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Ok, my last winter-rc-toy had two propellers and two PET-bottles, it did the same thing (but it worked well on ice). So this years winter-rc-toy have two props in front to stabilize on both pitch and roll. Just put Betaf... I mean iNav on an FC a prop in front and do some MMIXing. ;)

The thrust line ought to do something here - shouldn't a slightly downward pointing prop lift the bow?

Difference would be marginal. Bow is just too heavy and sith too deep in the water

Nice, I build one with two rudders in 1985. Could you build something larger with 10 to 12 inch prop and lower kw? It would sound better and some finns could improve the stability.

My limited research told me that the thrust to weight ratio should be slightly less than 1:1 and that the centre of gravity should be about 1/3rd or 1/4 from the back rather than the front like on a plane. I didn't have any problems with weight and mine weighs about 600 grams which feels heavy for it's size.

Looks like other people made the same suggestions I was going to. I would have used a pusher prop with rudders behind the prop and pointing up to force the nose to rise. It would take a few coats of epoxy to waterproof the hull and the extra weight would negate the gains made by using LW-PLA. Looks good at the start before it got soggy so I think the hull size and ratio are correct. Air boats in the swamps in the US are about the same length/width ratio.

I guess painting the hull would seal it from water ingress (unless it is getting in via the hatch seal) and maybe lengthening the hull might reduce the nosing over, probably at the expense of maneuverability. Just guesses on my part, as I've never dabbled in air boats. Keen to see how you resolve this - I know you will beat it 🙂.

My next project is likely going to be an airboat, so I've been researching. At first I considered 3d printing the hull. But that makes the boat heavy, and hard to modify. Instead I'm just going to use Styrofoam. Is 3d printing an airboat possible? Sure. But I don't think 3d printing is the right tool for this particular job.
