With the Nintendo eShop shut down, here are four ways you can play 3DS games on your modded 3DS and beyond: install the cartridges directly on your device, dump the cartridges into ROM files so you can play them on emulators, install ROM files onto the 3DS, or use an eShop alternative to digitally download your games.

H-shop is Noah's Arc for games that would otherwise dissapear. Archieve those games, because h-shop isn't eternal either. 3ds/ds games aren't that big of files, so that's nice. If Nintendo got its way and no ROMs were distributed : physical cartridges decay over time and those games would dissapear forever. Now the next problem is : who will manufacture double-screen hand-held consoles to replace the decaying DS and 2/3DS? Those came out quite a long time ago. The older ones will start breaking alot more.

As someone who has a bunch of downloaded games on my 3ds, my biggest fear has always been my 3ds dying and losing my library. Since just buying a new or used 3ds and linking up to my Nintendo account won't allow me to redownload my games or even reuse my micro SD card, this video is a lifesaver.

Calling Nintendo customer support can help you transfer your Nintendo account to a new 3DS if you don't have your old 3DS. Downside is no save data would be saved just your library and who knows if customer support does 3DS anymore

Good video Russ. Just an FYI: the Luma3DS CFW already unlocks the region-lock so that DSi-enhanced and 3DS games from any region will work, regardless of the origin country of the 3DS.

I kinda stocked up on 3DS systems a few years back when prices started going up. I have a modded 2DS(generic blue), a modded New 3DS(black Mario), a stock New 3DS(Animal Crossing) and a stock New 3DS XL(Pikachu). They're by far the best way to play any of the DS systems.

I love watching your videos they are super helpful. I have a new 2DS XL that I will be modding shortly and will follow along your guide. I've had custom firmware on my 3DS for a few years now I like being able to play Turbo Grafx CD-ROM games and Sega CD games and you can also play some PlayStation 1 games I put Twilight menu on my 3DS and I enjoy seeing the box art for the games from 3DS to DSIware to Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance wonderswan color Neo Geo pocket Atari lynx Game Gear and a bunch of older systems like Commodore 64 dosbox mame neogeo etc all playable through retroarch and stand alone emulaters 😊

So I went to dump 4 games in the ROMs/3ds file and it's saying "file too large for the destination file system" for one of the four games (Ultra Sun) when I clearly have enough space in my SD card. Any reason why?

Thanks for these great videos. The only thing I would imagine adding would be getting Stardew Valley to run on the 3DS. It was the game I most wanted to come out for the 3DS, and this would seem like the time to figure it out.

maybe try out harvest moon? it was the stardew valley _before_ stardew valley. i wanted stardew on 3ds too, but alas. i wish a lot of new indie games could exist on 3ds

@@spriteluver I have no idea. I imagine since it hasn't been done, it wouldn't be easy. But at its core it could be emulation within the fixed hardware. Maybe someday someone could, I wouldn't know where to start. It's been so long since I've played a Harvest Moon game (HM64) I wouldn't know which one to start with.

If you use an R4 Card you can play DS games without taking up any of the 300 spaces on your home screen. Just a tip for anyone wanting to maximize the amount of titles on their 3DS.

Have you removed the plate on the bottom of the device? You have to do that on the New 3DS XL, I’m not sure about the others. The video Russ made on the modding process will cover removing the SD card.

it doesn't come with the sd card, but for old 3ds the slot for one should be right under the volume controls.

I love adamantly by the unpopular lifestyle of "if it's still sold first hand, I won't download it". Nin shutting down their eshop actually kinda broke me a little because there were still so many games you could buy first hand, while so many others that you now couldn't. Seeing that you can download off the cartridges though, I really like that idea. Especially since I have (what I consider for myself) collection cartridges that I don't really want to lose or damage. I might have a go at jailbreaking my 2DS XL even if it is just for that and some of those almost lost downloadable items.

By no-longer distributing them, Nintendo made all their DS and 3DS games abandonware ( will no longer distribute a product ). Thank you Nintendo. Others will carry the torch you threw away. From a marketting perspective I understand. Nintendo makes more profits by promoting and selling their new Switch line of consoles and games. And they better understand people will share, play and preserve games Nintendo no longer distribute, because that's 1-never stopping 2-legal in most jurisdictions ( abandonware and distribution without profit ).

There's also a way to install games directly on your sd card from your pc, instead of relying on slow download/install speeds of the 3ds, for big games like snake eater or xenoblade it can save up to 30minutes of installation

After pressing "Install game image" and the content appearing on the home screen, do you still need the .3ds file in the roms folder? Or are you free to delete it from the folder after it installs?

I got a new old stock “new” 3DS from Japan, I hacked it in Japanese (with an iPad and the google translate camera pointed at it) and changed the region to EU following the 3dshacks guide site to get English. Region change was pretty straight forward, but I *think* you need to hack it first, so the minor difficulty is doing that with all the menus in Japanese

Another great video. I do have one question relating to this and your 3DS hacking video: Did you factory reset the 3DS so you had a "fresh" system for the video? I know you mentioned Nintendo might detect the hack but with the eShop down is reset still possible?

I think Russ says something in his modding video about how formatting on the 3DS/2DS systems (which if you know anything about cameras, resets the data) was optional and it was just to delete his Nintendo account. So I wonder if you could mod with a Nintendo account and keep all of your game data. 🤔 It's worth looking into before trying and losing all of your data!

so when going from rom to 3ds, are you writing to the 3ds internal storage or the sd card? and if u do write to the "system" storage how many games can u install or is that dependent on the sd card size?

Hey Russ! I wanted to ask, after the 3DS is hacked, are you still able to login to your Nintendo account for the system or is it a no no? Games downloaded from the hshop, can they go online or is it a no no as well. Similar to how each cartridge is linked with a code or number on the switch, will the hshop download be flagged? Is there a way to copy your already converted.3ds file extension hands to the device without putting it on the Home Screen? (Like in the roms / 3ds folder to access and play that way to not crowd your Home Screen? Thx again! Great vid as always! I only found 3vids for 3ds too? Will there be more??
