Wish I had you for an instructor.. Went to Tulsa welding school and that place is straight cookie cutter. Had a quick demo and the instructors would go wonder while you had no idea what you were doing. I've watched a ton of your videos and think "why was I told I HAD to do it that way" when I see you do something that would be more comfortable for me, and still be right. It's been a few years since I got out of the school but it put a bad taste in my mouth about the industry and didn't have the drive to become a welder after. Anyways, watching you teach is making me want to go practice again and get into again for some side projects.

When it came to the money part, they said my welds were cold! They weren't. Its just your basic tactic to pay less money! I use to do the same thing when I want a boilermaker company. I'm not going to take the job because the pay wasn't right and they don't have insurance! I was amazed at how good my welding looked and ran though! Does this apply to non-flux core as well? Currently in college and struggling with doing this. I'm either to high on my beads, getting valleys, or too far over on my cap. My root pass and hot passes look really well, which is a shame that if I have one minor mistake on my cap my professor doesn't pass me which is understandable. But all the hard work, prep, and having to adjust to my environment compared to work just to not pass because 1/32" of my cap has a valley. In my booth at school I have no room to move, no where to put my arm, and the only way to get the work piece stable is a makeshift vise attached to a tube. Only if you could come visit my college and see what I'm dealing with. I'm adjusting every which way and trying to over come many mental obstacles but my brain just won't let me. Welding is my passion, love, career, hobby, and everything in between. My life revolves around welding. But I am just struggling.
@Trippyzard

you are supposed to learn like that, if you learn in a perfect booth, when you get to the field you will be in over your head when you have to weld from a fixed position, I learned in similar conditions, the only thing you can do is keep burning that's it.

Im just going through some of the replies and laughing because your title explains its flux "core" and shielded with gas "dual". At the plant i work at here in 'Victoria TEXAS". We use esab dual shielded 1/16 wire. This video is very helpful. Since alot of our welds are tested "Full-Penatration". On base plates and other material. It's a structual plant. The test is on 1 inch plate 3g. there is not a landing and the plates are butted up sometimes both plates are beveled to 45 sometimes only one is beveled and one squared. I quess just depends on how supervisor feels that day. If you pass the visual the QC lets you back guauge the weld then run up vertical beads to fill and cap. That is a bend test but our welds are UT'd other then on the test. Most people I've met do not know how to back guage to get the trash out. Ive seen alot of videos but not one teaching how to back guage to get certain structual jobs. If you know what im talking about make a video to teach others. If not send me a halla and I'll help you out. I'm right down the road brother.

Southern Pride / Dixieland there are flux core wires made foruse with gas (dual shield only) and types that can be used without any gas. dual-shield-only type wire leaves a lot less slag than gasless. in fact even solid core ER70S6 wire leaves some slag in the form of silica buildup (the S in the designation is silica content) but you can usually just weld over it without trouble.

The code book for D1.1 is for mechanical and structural weldments. The parameters for open root butt joint D1.1 certification is --- --- 1/8" root opening, 1/8" land (the face where the point of the bevel is removed) and 22.5 degrees bevel on each plate, except the horizontal position. In which case, the lower plate is 90 degrees, and the upper plate is 45 degrees. Pipe Welding and Rail Road have their separate code books with different parameters.

The one thing I found a little confusing in this video is the terminology used. You often said to "drag", but that isn't a drag travel angle. That's a push angle. You do clearly show early on that you aren't going to drag, but push. The point you were trying to make was stringers versus a weave, but at least for me (i'm nearly through getting my welding degree) I think the phrasing used can confuse some.

By drag, he meant dragging the nozzle on the the walls of his bevel.
@GeekInJeep
@GeekInJeep 6 лет назад
I'm not saying I am confused. I'm saying that new welders familiar with proper terminology could be confused when he says "drag". A drag travel angle means your wire is pointed back toward the puddle as you weld. A push means your wire is pointed in the direction your are traveling toward the front edge of the puddle. He's doing a push. As for him dragging on the bevel with the nozzle, no. That would make his stickout way too short. His nozzle isn't in contact with anything. It's a great video. The guy has great skills. Just saying the way he used the word should be reconsidered for future videos.
@tdo7d11
@tdo7d11 6 лет назад
ViolentLotus That was 100% push, but how he was taught might have something to do with it too. I’d also add that the voltage/wire speed changes as the plate becomes hotter or allow to cool a bit between passes. Depends on the test parameters...

I got my boilermakers' journeyman certificate in 1978, and I have welded Dual Shield for most of the time since then. (Recently retired) Yes, you should clean your weld between every pass, no matter what method you may be using. And yes, you will need to give the test plate some time to cool down before continuing on to weld the next pass. That being said, there are instances where not cleaning between passes is totally acceptable. One example would be intermediate and cover passes on a horizontal butt joint.
@albertopena1506
@albertopena1506 5 лет назад
You should clean it after every weld either by using a wire brush or a grinder with a wire wheel. And i personally don't wait for the plate to cool down after every weld i do. I just weld, clean and weld till i finish and i have never failed a welding test.

@jakeb6909
@jakeb6909 3 года назад
No stringer means no weaving or electrode manipulation. Dragging is when you put your electrode away from the direction you are traveling verses pulling where you have it pointed in the way of travel. Usually if there's slag you drag so you arent in your slag deposit trying to weld out
@bolmstead1910
@bolmstead1910 5 лет назад
Folks, make note of the lack of arc movement. No weaving, oscillating, whipping or otherwise manipulating of the wrist. That looks like a very good weld, and probably is a very good weld. He has pretty good settings and lets the wire do the work. Good stuff. 350 imp and 28V would be a pretty good "maximum" for parameter settings. He was at 310, or something like that. Very good stuff!!

Which flux core wire are you using? NR-211, NR-233, NR-232 ? There are many different flux core wires and they all run different? NR-232 & 233 you point down hill and stack the weld instead of pushing it up hill like you did here. By looking at it I'd say this is 211 or some equivalent. You do know what you are doing, you are a good welder, but it would be helpful if you were a little more thorough in your explanation and consistent between what you say and what you do. example, tacking opposite corners then center, then you tacked 2 corners on the same side letting the backing strip pull up a little, also you say dragging it uphill while you were pushing, and never go side to side then you can go side to side a little as I'm doing here. I'm not trying to bash you, just give some helpful suggestions so your viewers may be able to learn a little more from you. If you are ever in Fresno, stop by AAW and say hi.

Ok you can weld but, maybe you should learn about flux core, the wind playes no part in porosity, with mig yes, because it needs the gas to push atmospheric away. Flux core is used by Iron workers because they can be in the wind and it still runs prefect. Nice video, other than the wind thing.

I used to use dual flux core and gas at one shop I worked. One day I had to weld a plate to a tube frame, I set up a guide bar, put down my shield and about 10 minutes and 7 or 8 feet later I put it back up. Looked like a machine did it. Make a weld kind of like a 7024 rod only it just keeps going.
