More painters need to see this, I had a boss that never used the outside face piece and sprayed stain and laqure and you could smell right through it, I ended up quitting because he wouldn't buy the right filters
I want to clarify that this outside pre filter 3M 5P71 is used to help filter out 95% of PARTICULATES meaning things like dust and foreign debris hence P95. It does help extend the life of your main organic vapor cartridge filter such as the 3M 6001. Let me make this clear that if you can still smell fumes, solvents, paint, etc. it means that you SHOULD be replacing your main organic vapor cartridge with the black stripe around it labeled as 3M 6001 or 6003 or 6006
Thank you so much, great video and straight to the point. Been having health issues after starting a job working around alot of saw dust so I decided to buy a mask and was a bit confused as to the configuration ,but this video cleared everything up , seriously thanks again
Thank you much for putting up this video! I was confused because the instructions in the filter pack illustration showed the texture side in, but the print on the filter said "mask side". So 3M instructions don't make sense. I called 3M 1-800 safety line, but closed on weekends. God bless you for posting this!
my filters came with an intelligible drawing, I thought it would make sense to keep the marking facing out so one could alway tell what filter is installed. I was wrong. Filter life and perhaps filter performance may be reduce, but I don't expect airflow resistance to change?
@@duartepaintinghandymanservices Hi, thank you for your quick reply. I assume the seal may not be as good, and almost certainly filter life is reduced. I agree with "you should use it as intended" however there is no real explanation to what happens, or why it matters that I could find. while I understand what I need to do, my curiosity remains unquenched :P btw I was not using the filter and respirator in a toxic environment, so as long as I had oxigen getting to my lungs and brain I should be fine (:
Thank you !!! I just bought one mask and got mad when i read " Mask side BS" I have a question , can you tell me is 95 filter will peotect when sanding chlor was heavily applied on wooden deck ?
Yes but ideally you would want to use a whole face protection since those chemicals can acces your body through your eyes but yes it should do the job, just wear eye protection and if you can hook up the sander to a vacuum that would also help alot, good luck in your project
There’s many filter types on the 3m chart that say “organic vapor” are those all good for spray painting? I’d like the one that’s good against isocyanates found in 2k paint
I used this respirator and the prefilter with the lettering on the outside, not the correct side, so I am wondering how much effectiveness I lost using the prefilter the wrong side out?
I'm pretty sure it still worked but just not as efficient, remember you're still protected with the charcoal, the particle filter just makes it last a bit longer and gets those big particles before they go through the charcoal.
I sadly bought one and it ended up being counterfeit. With the respirator and cartridges on, and used correctly, Im still able to sniff out perfume, gasoline, and rust dust. I should throw it out?
I just got this and it came with 2 of them in each slot and one was facing the cartridge and the other facing the outside. Which means there is 4 all together and one facing toward the cartridge and one of them out
ILOVEOLIVEOIL they come together to be used together, the white particulate filters also help to filter fumes, dust also helps to make the charcoale last longer
"Confused why you use both" That is how they are designed, if you work (and you most likely do) in an environment with lots of particles, the vapor filter will get clogged fast, the addition of a P95 filter keeps the particles out and the the organic vapor filter is truly only filtering for the very small organic vapor particles.
The pre filter is a particulate filter, it blocks out airborne particles. The cartridge filter blocks fumes form using an airless sprayer, organic vapors
@@benjamindelannee3501 Sometimes the filter that blocks particles .. retains the fumes form toxic fumes...even though the other blocks the fumes.. that's what I'm questioning
I wish I had watched this before using mine with an airless sprayer. My lungs don't feel right. I thought 3m packaged it ready to go out of the box. Watching this I found two filters in the filtration section hence I never had a good seal. :(
@@duartepaintinghandymanservices when to replace 5n11 filters...first question.. Does it's give protection from aerosol transmission....2nd questions....
@@shiba9592 Replacing the filters depends on what you're using the mask for if they are visibly dirrty than is necessary to change, I don't know about the aerosol transmission I wouldn't be able to tell you, sorry
I'm spraying weed killer, commercial strength, so I bought the pre-filters for such chemicals. I change a prefilter after each use. How do you know when the charcoal filter unit needs replacing?
@@jmel1746 depends how thin that product is and how close you are to it, paint tends to stay in the air longer because its so thin so I have to switch the charcoals every 2 to 3 spray jobs, when I can smell the fumes come through that's a good indication for me, but I wouldn't suggest you do that since that material may not even have much of a smell so don't rely on that. If you do change your pre-filters regularly they should last you a bit
