I bought the 3M 6300 mask with the 6001 cartridges about 10 months ago. I used the mask for my intended purpose and it worked great! But now the mask has been sitting in a plastic bag all this time and I am not sure if the bag was airtight the whole time. So I have a couple questions here: 1. Will the cartridges (which have the date 08.2015 stamped on them) still be good or should they just be discarded simply because they have been exposed for 7 months past the date stamped on them? 2. In the future would sealing the cartridges in a foodsaver bag ("airtight" seal) greatly extend the life of the cartridges? 3. Does heat and or light affect the lifespan of the cartridges? In other words, after using the cartridges once would: Sealing the cartridges in a foodsaver bag along with storing cartridges in the freezer help any? Thank you, I do very much appreciate you taking your time to help clarify my questions. This is the type of knowledge I truly value because of its benefit to us all.

You may have one of the 3M 5000 series masks. These masks are sold as a pre-assembled mask with cartridges and filters. The cartridges on these masks are not replaceable. While the 3M 6000 half mask is a darkish gray, the 5000 series is very light colored, almost white. Not sure that there are any part numbers to go by on the mask itself, but when you purchased it, it would have been in a sealed zip-lock foil bag. This packaging is unique among 3M respirator masks. Hope that helps? Thank you.

isnt the 3M-6055 A2 filter or 3M 6051 A1 filter better? Or are they the same? On one site 3M say the 6060 filter is Multi/Vapour, but the color is the same as A1/A2 filters above. So does color mean something?

I have been welding with the 2097 filters for years. I tried the 6001 the other day with two dust filters layered on top. It doesn't fit under a welding hood. I used it anyway with my hood just to test it out. My welding hood just rested on top of the 6001 rather than it being contained inside. It was effective for both welding and grinding steel. Yet it really didn't fit under a grinding mask/shield either. Most welders fabrications don't even consider respiratory protection. I am rarely satisfied with products out there and I'm always thinking of how to re-engineer things. If I could, I'd have a housing half as thick as the 6001 and allow the user to reuse the housing and just dispose of the charcoal contents to refill as needed, and switch out the dust filters. 3M needs to listen to its users and adjust accordingly. I had a 9100 FX air and Adflo system. That system never had charcoal. Why? It is exactly what the system needed. Customer support also would not provide a simple spring for the hinge on the helmet. This is the difference between having Swedish engineers running things and 3M sales people running things. It is a different world. 3M needs to listen if they want to drive the future. Until then many welders who care about their lungs will just look elsewhere for solutions or create their own answers themselves. Perhaps I am there already. Permits for these respirators are also a joke. Permits are only required if a weld shop requires a respirator. Most will not require a respirator because they would also require purchasing the respirator and filters. It is completely a financial concern and not a concern for the overall health of employees. Well that is my venting for now. My thoughts on this subject are stronger than anyone I've ever spoken to. There needs to be more concern for welders and fabricators. There needs to be better products made and issued. Things need to be fixed, changed and re-engineered and not just discussed. If not, than perhaps my bitching about this subject needs to end and I need to approach my own business developing a product that works for welders and not the concerns of share holders in companies.

I was thinking about that when reading about 6000 series respirator cartridges trying to find the right one.. for one thing when I read "safe for welding" I'm Like WTF? That fits under a helmet? That and trying to be safe with ratings like.. "certain organic vapor".. yet it's warning carries sickness or death with misuse. Too vague. I've used n95 respirators porting iron heads.. thought I was okay and had metal fever. Before that I used the 60923.. probably didn't realize how fast they expire with or without use.. for one thing breathing in them .. always made me have to consciously breathe after use.. for another they are next to fucking useless for something as seemingly common as polyurethane. Point is I have a restoration.. lots of mahogany wood ..grinding.. chassis paint. I did not know that stain still contains lead.. like they advertise people doing all of these great diy. Projects. . I can't find a respirator that's good for v.o.c . It's driving me insane just to be healthy. "Certain organic vapors". They need a list. So now I bought 6001 to breathe easier.. but learn its not p100 and there are pre filters .. oh but a retainer to find.. it's absurd. How many car TV shows or wherever do you see them wearing a 3m respirator supposedly not good for isocyanates .. spraying everywhere in a booth. I'm so beyond frustrated at how stupid it all is.. ratings.. codes.. what they can't do. I've spent hours on my stupid non ergonomic phone trying to find out. They obviously do not give a sh about people. Also what's with the workplace only rating ..
@DS-mo6md

Also I had to use high temp engine enamel. My mistake of using it a little wrong but .. I put a fan on the piece outside.. away from me.. slapped an n95 on thinking it would block any mist .. got a little sick days later... so if that's v.o.cs .. whatever... why the Fuck do they or are hey allowed to sell a product in a $12 rattle can when you should have a 1K air system... the enamel is beautiful but yeah.. I'm kind of pissed at everything

I know it's not rated for dust ... But I got mine dusty cause I didn't have the other filter that attaches to the outside .. so I had no choice and had to work so I just used this for dust protection ... I got home and and I banged both together and it released a huge dust from the front cover...I kept banging till all dust was gone .. the inside hole where they attached looked pretty clean ...my question is ? Are they penetrated with dust ? Compromised? The front cover doesn't look like it let's air thru but I know it does cause that would be dumb if it didn't . I would die ... ????? Can someone help me give me your opinion

The textile on the 3M 6001 cartridge is intended to contain the activated charcoal granules within. The weave is not tight enough to filter small particles, and will not hold them out. The 6001 absorbs organic vapors like a sponge, until exhausted. Filtering particles is not a consideration. For that you need the prefilter and filter retainer.
@GerardPowell
@GerardPowell 3 года назад
no extra filter or cover needed? the instructiosn that came with 6001ci indicated it should be put together with another filter and a cover.
@pksafetysupply
@pksafetysupply 3 года назад
The 3m 6001 organic vapor cartridge contains granulated charcoal, which absorbs solvents and vapors out of the air as it passes through. The fabric on the front and back are there only to contain the granules. They have no specific filtering properties, and are not rated for any toxic dust at all. A prefilter, such as the 3M 5N11 or 5P71 are attached to the outside/front of the cartridge by means of a 3M 501 retainer. The filters may then be changed as needed, while providing N95 rated filtration.
@annedrop
@annedrop 3 года назад
Hi, hello I would like to ask a question. I'm mainly using this for painting activities, if it used up, can you change only the pre-filter, or you need to replace the whole cartridge? Thanks!
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 3 года назад
When used for spray painting, it is fine to change the pre-filter only. As the filter gets coated with paint mist, breathing resistance increases. Time to change the filter. This would be the 3M 5P71, which is held in place by the 3M 501 retainer. This translucent plastic cap should be saved and reused.

How does this filter differ from the 3M 2097 P100 filter? Is one better than the other?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 10 лет назад
The 3M 2097 is a combination of P100 particulate (dust) filter and NUISANCE organic vapor protection. This is a thin layer of charcoal that absorbs bad smells for the most part. The 3M 6001 on the other hand, is only filled with granulated charcoal. This offers a much higher level of organic vapor protection. Though it has essentially no protection from dust, and certainly not to the toxic dusts that a P100 rated filter would offer. If a combo filter/cartridge is desired, check out the 3M 60921.

Hey! If I was working with dusty things and was using these filters, would it work?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 8 лет назад
The 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridge does not have a rating for dust protection. There is no built in filter to stop the particles from flowing through. The fabric you see on the front is only there to contain the activated charcoal. If you would like to have filter capability alone, please try either the 3M 2071 or 2091. Also, you can add a filter pad on top of the 3M 6001. Try the 3M 5P71 filter, using a 3M 501 retainer to hold it in place. All of these are available on our web site.

I did the same thing .. I used it in a dusty environment (tile thinset into dust ) ...I had no choice...how comprised do you think it is ? How much did the dust penetrate? I got home and it looked to me like all the dust was layered on the front side of the filter ... I banged them together and took off all the dust .... If you seen the front side of this filter that's why I'm asking cause it looks like air doesn't go thru but I know it does .. just how much

I guess you have to use N95 filters with a plastic cap over the organic vapor cartrdriges, as I use mine. I use for heavy sanding wood and stuffs and it filters everything out, the interior of the masks is very clean even after hours of work. Look for plastic caps for the cartrdiges.

how's it different from 3M5N11 ? or is it better to use both of them together?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 5 лет назад
The 3M 5N11 is a particulate (dust) filter. It catches particles out of the air as they are pulled through the filter. The 3M 6001 in contrast, is a cartridge filled with activated charcoal. Organic vapors, such as solvents or bad smells, are absorbed like a sponge as the air passes through. Very different principal, though they are often used in combination to remove both dust and solvents,

3M has very high standards for quality, and their products are reviewed and approved by standards agencies in countries throughout the world, not just the USA. There are certainly other brands that have similar records, but 3M stands out in this regard, offering the consumer some confidence that the product will perform as designed. Can't say the same for cheaper versions.

HI, Iam looking for a mask that my girlfriend can use in her beauty shop. She has problems with an artery leading to her lungs and its important the chemicals are completely filtered out when she breathes. I was looking at the 3M 6000 Series Half Facepiece Respirator, Medium with the3M Organic Vapor Cartridge/Filter 60921. Would this block out all chemicals. Thanks for your help!
@rickpedley1099

The 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridge will absorb a variety of solvents and chemicals. When used with a properly fitting half mask respirator, you should not smell or taste the solvents and chemicals being used. For a beauty shop application, I might actually suggest the 3M 6006 multi-gas cartridge. Lots of nasty chemicals in nail and hair coloring supplies. Available at pksafety(dot)com.

Can it filter perchloric acid, nitric or sulfuric acid?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 4 года назад
For acid gas applications using a cartridge style respirator, we would suggest the 3M 6003 organic vapor/acid gas cartridge. The specially treated charcoal granules in this cartridge absorbs (not filters) acid gas vapors. There is a limit as to what it can handle, and we would suggest that you contact 3M with the specific acid and probable concentration. The acids you mention have the potential to be extremely dangerous, depending on how they are used, and the levels encountered.

The 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridge is filled with granulated charcoal, and absorbs these vapors like a sponge. The cartridge offer no specific protection from particles and mists. The fabric on the front and back is meant to contain those granules while offering only minimal breathing resistance. The opposite of meaningful filtration.

Hi, how do i clean this?
@pksafetysupply
@pksafetysupply 4 года назад
There is no provision to clean these cartridges. If there are particulates (dust) in the air, then a pre-filter is attached to the front/outside of the cartridge to keep the dust out. The fabric material is only there to keep the granulated charcoal in place, and has little if any filtering ability. Dangerous dusts can easily pass through. As far as the charcoal, it absorbs organic vapors until saturated, and is then disposed of. There is no method of reusing the charcoal that we are aware of.

The charcoal granules in the 3M 6001 are not able to be cleaned or reused. They absorb organic vapors like a sponge, though once the organic compounds have bonded with the charcoal, they will not release via common means. And in case I miss your meaning, please also note that the fabric front and back of the cartridge is only dense enough to contain the charcoal, and provide no meaningful filtration of particle.
