4 Cyl Turbo Jeep Wrangler! Better Than The Legendary 3.6 V6!?!

We drove the new Hurricane engine in the 4cyl Wrangler. This additional option on the Wrangler that does not necessarily provide any additional benefits other than driving dynamic. What is the right call 4cyl or V6? Lets hash it out! eco torque, mild hybrid?

Had my 2019 2.0L JLU Rubicon for almost 2 years now. 61k miles on her. She's been an absolute pleasure!!! I'm in Colorado Springs and go skiing every year and explore the abandoned gold mines every summer. There isn't anything this Jeep hasn't been able to overcome. 2" MOPAR lift with 35" tires on factory wheels. Only used the winch for other Jeeps and Fords. Absolutely love her but there have been times I have wondered if I went with the right engine (particularly when looking at aftermarket add-ons). The supreme fuel is more expensive but I'm okay with it.

I do have a question about the 2.0.. We rented one for Colorado, and we were driving around 12,000ft elevation like we had been the days before. All of a sudden it just drove lazy. The power just wasn’t there anymore, even on highway driving. We would floor it and the power was gone. Well the next morning it was back to normal without doing anything to it. I’m enjoying my 2.0L Wrangler. You can use 87/89 octane, but you’ll definitely experience pinging under heavy acceleration. I use 93 octane in mine and avg 25 mpg on my back road commute to work. On the hwy it gets about 23 ish. I’ll probably grab a piggy back tuner at some point, adds around 40-50 HP for around $500. It’s already pretty quick, as I was able to hang with a Ford Raptor for awhile, but he eventually started pulling away. With a tune I’m sure I would of hung in there a lot longer. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Is there any word on how reliable these are in general, and with the tune? I rented one for Colorado this weekend and absolutely loved it. Had no idea it was the 2.0T until we popped the hood. Definitely a zippy car I was surprised with the power. Funny thing I didn’t even put 91 or 93 and it did amazing, I can imagine with premium it would have more power. What did you mean by experiencing “pinging under heavy acceleration”?
@TheRoadTaken
@TheRoadTaken 2 года назад
@@Eddy-09 Pinging aka "engine knocks." It's when the fuel burns before the piston reaches full compression (maximum benefit of the combustion). The engine slightly misses maximum performance and thus why overall speed, power delivery, and fuel consumption takes a hit. Today's' computerized engines _can_ help combat this. As I understand it, it is not damaging to the engine.

Great video. The 4 feels great to drive. I was ready to buy one then I watched this video. This is the first and only video with the mention of this engine requiring 91 octane. I spent 15 years with an Acura with those requirements paying $.30-.50 more at the pump per gallon to get the stated mpg. NO WAY am I doing that again! That's like $300 more per year in fuel plus turbo maintenance. I know "recommended ", which means poor fuel economy and more maintenance if you don't.

Compared to a friend's 2020 Rubicon with a 3.6L V-6, I am getting 2 miles per gallon better mileage on regular gas. I get better highway mileage (23MPG v. 20 MPG) also on regular gas. He has not modded his Wrangler and my mods are sitting in the back waiting for the weather to warm up so that I can install them. And I like the push off the line. I am 69 years old and bought my first jeep in October 2022. It was a used 2018 Wrangler 2.0T 2D with 24K and we like it. We bought it for a daily driver to do our errands in and to keep from putting so much mileage on my truck and her car. I don't put my foot in it and am getting 24-26 mpg in town and have gotten up to 29.4 on the interstate on 93 octane gas. We don't have 91 octane here. I thought about running 87 in it and was told I could, but wonder how much it will affect the power and performance I am getting now. I don't want to do anything that would cut the life of the engine short. It is a personal decision I guess, what fits each person best.

I just bought a 2019 Rubicon. Dealer let me take home a 2.0L and 3.6L each for 48hrs --- Not sure if this makes any sense but the 3.6L felt like it was really meant to be in the Jeep, whereas the 2.0L didn't. I didn't notice any fuel difference, but then again both cars were brand new and by no means broken in. I ended up going with the 3.6L for 3 reasons 1- Reliability, the 3.6 has been around for a while and the 2019 (and 2018) have improvements on the last gen which was noticeable from the JK's I drove, 2-Up here in Canada (not sure in US) they charge about $1,000 more for the 2.0L. For some reason the 2.0L are sitting on the lots up here and many dealers are discounting them heavily. At least in my area, there doesn't seem to be an appetite for the 4 banger.and 3 - On my second day of driving the 2.0L I had a check engine light which turns out had to do with the hybrid system, most likely a fluke I ended up having the one 2.0L with issues, but didn't make me feel great) --- My first Jeep was a 1991 Jeep YJ with a naturally aspirated 4 cyl, and I absolutely loved it. I beat the crap out of it and it never let me down, but then again it was a very simple engine. The 2.0L Turbo is still a new engine, and I think they'll need a few years to iron out the bugs. Had a Nissan Juke with Turbo and always put better gas in it. Sunday I traded my 2011 JKU for the 2019 2.0 4cyl sport. Wondering if this was a good decision! I drove both the v6 and the 4cyl. The v6 was super zippy and fast the 2.0 sounds like an RC car but it feels like a car engine in a Jeep. Kind of like a city Jeep. Interesting to see it get good reviews that I'm glad. Also I want to mention, my first thought after driving the 2.0 is IT NEEDS AN AGRESIVE SOUNDING EXHAUST lol that'll fix the sound.

Good video! When this video was made, was the 2.0T more expensive than the 3.6? On my recent 2021 JLUR build, the 3.6 was $1,500 more than the 2.0T. Personally, didn't feel like the 3.6 was worth $1,500 more after driving them both and not really noticing a huge difference. And dealer showed me in the manual where it says 87 octane gas is just fine with the newer builds of the 2.0T. Not sure if they changed something with that from when this video was made. It does say performance can be optimized using 91 seems like 87 will be fine for most uses.
@PerformanceOnWheels
@PerformanceOnWheels 3 года назад
Yeah the 2.0 was more expensive. I do believe the 87 has always been acceptable. Although stated not clearly the point was to get all the claimed MPG and performance 91 or higher was needed. What one did you buy?

Took a Jeep to 14k in the San Juans? Don't think so, dude! There're only two roads above 14k in Colo. They're both paved. Mt. Antero only goes to 13,900. An old good running '50s car is all you need for those. You need to drive Blanca Peak or Holy Cross to test that Rubi. Old locked/lifted Cherokees do it all the time. Those are appreciating now. Moab's Golden Spike and Rusty Nail are good practice trails before you follow a good vintage Cherokee up Pritchett Canyon.

If you live in EU you need to use the 98 octane. That is the equivalent of U.S 91/93. Drove both today and it was a no brainer! The V6 Pentastar is leaps and bounds better than the little Italian 4 cylinder. The 4 cyl turbo is loaded with turbo lag and thank God it is only teamed with the H-speed transmission because that is what makes it drivable. That little four-cylinder could not operate without that transmission. When you put that same eight speed transmission behind the V6, that is a combination that is 100% unbeatable. 99% of all day magazines and testers decide with the six also. If you are looking for Something that will be dependable many years down the road, that two is a no-brainer! A naturally aspirated v6 is much better

Just my preference as I like the control and overall experience of shifting. When I bought my first Jeep, it was a manual JKU. As much as I loved that Jeep, I hated its stick. It sometimes pops out of gear (very common among JKUs), sometimes scrapes when shifting and simply wasn’t a good experience - before or after mods (2.5” AEV lift, larger tires, etc). My JLU is automatic and I had to admit that the experience was just better.
