I have a 2021 JLU Rubicon with the 2.0. I have been a Jeep owner since 1987. I have had several motors including V8s. I did months and hundreds of hours of research trying to find actual negative data on the engine. Everything negative I found was opinion without data on what someone "thought" would happen. I even researched the European versions of the engine to try and get longer reliability data. All the data based research I found was all positive for the 2.0 being the best choice. Most of the negative fall back of other Jeep owners (when I bring up the 2.0 specifications) is it will not be as reliable, but again that's all opinions. Time will tell. For now I have had the Jeep a year and love the engine on and off road; even running 37's. Off the line, on the interstate, crawling the rocks, or slinging mud with fast turning tires; for me it was the best choice.
@scottishd0g87if any engine makes it to 100k without major problems now a days it’s alright I’m assuming you’ve probably got a older one so you can’t compare back then to now.
Retired factory rep here. I have driven em all too. Its the bomb! Does everything well. Its new in the US. Not in Europe. Its in Alfa’s and runs like stink. It runs like stink at all rpms. 8 spd just makes it! At altitude, doesn’t loos power.
I have owned mine for over 2 years. If this engine was in a TJ it would be a rocket ship. In my heavy 4 door rubicon hard top with 35s its still fast, able to hold interstates speeds 90+ with no problems. Gas mileage is pretty good. I never imagined a 2.0 with so much USABLE power. Dont know how long its gonna last but runs great and I drove it for over 32 hours straight from coast to coast with zero issues other than stopping to fill up
My wife and I bought a 2024 2 door Wrangler Sport. We bought it in February and as of mid July it has 8,200 miles on it (plus 3,000 towed miles behind our motor home). I traded in my F150 with V8 and I can tell you we have been totally amazed with this 4 cylinder turbo. I had many concerns buying a 4 cylinder with the turbo, but those concerns have all been laid to rest. Totally agree with you.
I am currently looking at a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Sport 2 door for my first Jeep I've ever owned. It has the 2.0 and I was concerned about it. Thank you for sharing this info, it makes me feel much better about it now.
Just came across this video, perfect timing. I was so sure I wanted the Rubicon 3.6 since I have the 2018 that I just gifted my daughter. The dealership only had the 2.0 in the Earl color I wanted. This video made my decision very easy as well as reading the comments! Thanks!!!
I've got a 2020 jl with a 2.0l turbo as well. Mine now has just over 60k miles with no issues whatsoever, just regular maintenance. It's got plenty of power and torque and I get 22 to 23 mpg driving it fairly hard
Picked up a 2022 Sport S with the 3.0 V6 Turbo Diesel in April. I test drove the 2.0 and did not like it. It got up and moved ok, but it didn't feel right. I wanted the 3.6, but there weren't any in stock in any dealership nearby with the features I wanted. So I ended up taking the plunge with the diesel. I've got ~7200 miles on it now and couldn't be happier. I drive a mix of freeway and city as well as taking a trip from Wisconsin into the Ozarks and back. My average fuel economy has been ~27-28 mpg. On long freeway runs I can get up to 32 mpg. I love the torque on the diesel and couldn't be happier. Hope your 2.0 makes you as happy as my diesel made me. But hey, we're driving Jeeps, so we should be smiling!
Hi Matt. I totally agree with you. This 2.0 is a blast to drive. I traded my 5.7 Hemi Grand Cherokee for a 2022 Willys unlimited and was a little apprehensive going to a 4 cylinder but it’s been great! Absolutely love driving it!
My first Jeep is the wrangler unlimited sport S, with the 2.0 engine. I am very happy with this car. I use it for everyday use, but also to go to the beach and off-pavement roads. Its gas consumption is very good.
Thanks for the reviews. I just ordered my first jeep last week. It's a 2024 wrangler 2door sport 2.0 turbo. I won't be doing any aggressive off roading, but perhaps easy trails. And want a convertible.
i have a 2016 wrangler with the sprintex super charger......we rented a newer jeep with the 2.0.....could not believe the pep it had......felt like it had as much get up and go than my jeep....very impressed also
Had a wrangler with the 2.0 4 cylinder as a rental and I’m actually pretty impressed it got better gas mileage than what I was expecting and it’s quite powerful and overall I had a lot of fun driving it
I had a 3.6 JLU Manual & 3.6 JT Auto. This 2.0T Xtreme Recon feels way more powerful down low. I also get better MPG with the 35s & 4.56 gears. I didn't think it was possible.
I love this engine also. One thing I have heard people who don't have one complain about is the loss of control when you are off-roading and the turbo kicks in. This is a problem I have never had. I have never had a sudden boost of power while trying to get over an obstacle. Precision control of the throttle is a must and this delivers. I also love the fuel economy. Driving from Denver to Crested Butte and back I can easily get 30mpg if I don't have a lead foot going up the mountains.
I have a 2021 Wrangler four door, with 2.0L for 35k miles. Its has plenty of power. I'm getting 28 to 31 mpg on a flat highway. I have the stock 31.5" tires. Good power when I'm driving into Lake Placid thru the hills and valleys of the Adirondack park , NY from I87. Would buy this setup again in a hear beat.
I was a Service advisor for a Jeep Dealer. The 3.6 engines had a lot of Rocker and lifter issues. The 2.0 engine is what i chose because i NEVER saw them in the shop for any engine problems. I have a 21 Wrangler 2.0 Freedom edition, and it's never been in the shop for anything but oil changes. And now that i'm doing the oil changes myself, it hasn't seen a shop since. The platform is great. One thing i highly suggest though is an oil catch can becuase it is a GDI (gasoline direct inject) engine and the valves will gunk up over time from oil blow-by. if you trap that oil, then these engines (from my perspective) will run for a long itme.
Love the channel brother! The wife and I just bought our first Jeep… 2023 4 door Rubicon 3.6L. Stingray clear coat. Should be taking delivery in a couple weeks. Looking forward to earning our cred!
I just sold my 2018 JLU with the 2.0 etorque - loved it - I lifted my Jeep 3.5" and went 37s with 5.13s (I towed a jetski) I was able to get 18/20mpg city/hwy! Engine has great torque and with the regear to 5.13s it pulled HARD! I miss it but life changes things come and go! Great Video!
I have a 2020 JLUR with the 2.0T, and purchased it in November 2019. I have just under 67k miles, and have had no issues. Stock, I would average 23 to 26 MPG. Now, 2.5" Lift, and 35" tires (KO2s), I average 18 to 20. I have taken the Jeep on three Badge of Honor Trails, with the hardest being Jericho Mountain in New Hampshire, and it has been a blast! I occasionally tow a teardrop camper, NuCamp T@G XL Boondock, and she tows excellent in the mountains. MPG will fall around 15 to 17 towing the 1400lb camper.
@@DIRTROADCRED Update; I just spun over 100k miles last week on the 2020 JLUR 2.0. She now sports a TeraFlex 3.5" CT3 Alpine Lift, 37" KO2s, and adjusted with the TASER. MPG hovers 18.7 to 20.3. Wheeled Moon Rocks in Reno, NV. and planning Rubicon in August 2024.
TOTALLY AGREE ! Excellent Reviews Matt !! Just over 7 weeks and 5,000 miles already and making 22/23 MPG ! '22 Willys JLU with 32"s. Got it to 24.5 MPG on recent trip. Never went under 21 MPG on dirt road. Pretty surprised as last Jeep had the V6 and was not as peppy. Great Job on your channel !
i have 46k on my 21 JLU Willys(yes i drive a lot) and knock on wood its been amazing. Love the way it performs get a cold air intake and the garett turbo whistls and the blow off valve is also very audible..As far as reliability havn't had one issue. I also wheel it (check out my youtube channel) and i have to say when my buddies with pennastars lack the extra oomph needed to get over a rock or obsticale the 2.0T rallys. I also have 35s and noticed very little differnce. Not to mention 24mpg on the highway 20 city. I love this motor. I personally couldn't imagine my Jeep without it.
Wife has a 2020 Wrangler 2.0 with Etorque. Almost 40K. 21 mpg on 37. Did a whole off road trip to Colorado and had a great time. Honestly, much better than the 3.6 in my Gladiator which is somewhat a dog. I remember your views when this came out. Glad you came around. : )
I test drove a 3.6 Gladiator and I think the dogginess comes from the lack of the E-Torque system after driving both. If they didn't offer the 3.6 E-Torque (I got it because not too many people talk or do videos on them) I would've gone with the 2.0L Turbo as my wife did in her Jeep.
I have a 2020 JL 2dr with the 2.0T. I'm at 30k ish miles and I love it. The start stop system has some issues, but that was battery related. It's my first 4 cylinder jeep and I would not go back
I have a '19 JLUR with the 2.0t and eTorque. It's on a Mopar 2" lift (got 3" though) with 35x12.5x17s Nitto RGs and this thing is amazing. Bought it brand new Mother's Day 2019 and have loved every minute of it. It will smoke the 35s in 2wd with zero effort. Honestly, Jeep needs to tune it up and throw it into the Gladiator.....say the Mojave for us beach boys/gals. If towing is not your objective, this would fit perfectly
I have the 2018 JL with the2.0 Turbo with etorque and love it. Over 70K miles and still running great. From my experience and what I have heard there have been very few issues with this engine.
Ten days ago I bought a 2024 2.0L Wrangler sport 4 door automatic trans that came with a 3" lift, Fuel Wheels and 35" Nitto's for 46K and change. So far I like it. I owned and daily drove a 4" lifted 82' GMC Jimmy back in the day. I've never owned a Jeep but it was on my bucket list. Stay tunned. I have never owned a Mustang either. I'm 68 and time is running out.
Bro love my 2.0!!! I have a 2018 with 30,000 plus miles and its awesome, running 38's and no issues. I have even gotten up to 21 MPG on this setup!!! Keep up the content!
I was skeptical about this engine but after nearly 2 years I am really glad I got it. Plus, it is all my dealer had in stock at the end of 2020, so it was either 2.0 or no Jeep. Also, I live in Idaho at nearly 5000ft above sea level, so the turbo really helps at this altitude. I have a 2021 Sport with take-off Rubicon wheels and tires with 12K miles
@@Aceinfinity-le8zc I'm not sure if the Rubicon wheels and tires affected the mileage because the dealer had a take-off set when I bought it. The only time I drove on the stock wheels/tires was my test drive.
Great video. I have a 2019 jl unlimited rubicon with a 3.5 inch lift and 37’s. Also a roof rack, winch etc.. It’s got the 2.0 e torque with 66,000 no issues whatsoever and lots of pep. Getting 22 almost 23 mpg
Jeep also uses the same 2.0L turbo in the 4xe powertrain. I'm really liking this in my 2023 Wrangler Sahara 4xe. 375hp and 470lb ft of torque in this powertrain option.
I have this same engine in my 2019 Cherokee trailhawk and I have 44500 miles on it and still am so glad I picked the turbo over the v6 too. Still love the push when I hit it in the middle of the turbo range. And I live in Colorado and drive at elevation a lot and that turbo makes even more of a difference for me than most
I took a trip to the top of pikes peak and barely noticed a power difference at the peak. First car I've ever driven to the top that still had any power at the peak. It was definitely an enjoyable drive
I have 3081 miles on my 2022 Rubicon 2.0 Turbo, and I absolutely love it. Took it offroading in the Mojave desert, and it was an absolute champ. I always look forward to driving it.
I have a 2021 80th Anniversary with the 2.0. I was worried about getting this over the 3.6L. After 25k, it has been perfect. A bit of valve noise on cold start but zero oil consumption. I'm getting an consistent 20mpg with 35's.
@@DIRTROADCRED yeah….I agree! I totally preferred it in my 80th anniversary Sahara but actually thought I was crazy and made to feel like I didn’t know anything by my male counterparts who prefer the 3.6….May trade mine in for a 2.0 - LOL!!! I remember my rig also feeling lighter which I loved! Thanks for that vid!!
My wife has a 2.0T in her 2019 JL. When I factory ordered my 2022 JL, I went with the 3.6 thinking that it was going to be far and away better than the 2.0T already in our garage. Man was I wrong. Now, in full disclosure, my other vehicle is a 2022 RAM Rebel with the 5.7 HEMI. But my 3.6 feels very disappointing compared to the 2.0T, even my 2004 TJ with the 4.0.
100% agree with you have a 2019 mid-year jlu sport s 2 L Turbo with e torque and 34-in bfgs all terrains I think the motor runs excellent I think I'm getting like 27 or 28 Highway 19 City haven't had a problem since I owned it Midway through 2019. Works well for me offroad plenty of grunt in mud and hill climbs in auto or shift mode. Like your channel keep it up
Thanks for all your hard work, Matt. My first vehicle was an 1989 YJ with the 4.2L. Your videos helped me choose when I ordered a 2023 White Willys Xtreme Recon 2.0 on the 4th of July. Congrats on your growing family. Looking forward to seeing your future videos - liked & subscribed!
I have a 2018 with 2.0 Turbo and e-torque. No issues with it to date unless you count the starter battery replacement. Apparently that is a common issue with the new JLs. It is like night and day vs the JK! The old lump felt like it was dragging an anchor after I test drove the JL. I am getting 50% further on a tank of gas too.
Was going to go with a Grand Cherokee and last minute decided on the only 4-door Wrangler that the dealer had. Was iffy about the 2.0 engine; but loving how it’s driving. Subscribing to your channel - thanks for sharing such informative content!!
I had the same dilemma last year. Ended up buying a GC Trailhawk for myself and bought a Wrangler Unlimited Sport Altitude for my wife - with the 2l Turbo engine. I love the engine after living with it for a while - I was also iffy about too when we bought it! Overall, I love both cars even though it cost me a fortune!
ALWAYS have your lump checked out!!! 100% agreed on the video assessment. Love my 2.0 JLU Willys and the gas mileage has also been around 23; so you're spot on!
First time Jeep owner here and I did extensive research for months to try to find what I wanted. I had always wanted a 2 door as a 3rd car for fun, but got sick of waiting. I barely have to drive highway, and most days I'm on roads 50mph and work at home a lot. That said, it made it a much easier choice to daily this (and get the 4 door for kids). I wanted the Rubicon for the potential, and plan to off road it in all situations. Got a great deal on a 22' that had some highway miles, in the color I wanted, checked all the boxes and then it was all down to wanting the I4 or not. So far, no complaints at all. I haven't taken it into anything overly challenging yet but I'm looking forward to doing so! My previous car was 2011 Liberty that actually got worse MPG than this does. It's plenty capable off road. I don't know why I waited so long to get one. Thanks for the channel, super helpful for newbies like me.
I had the Diesel and loved it 3.6 has always been a reliable engine for me . I hear a lot of good things about the 2.0 I’m just too old school for Turbos I’m getting left in the dirt by this hi tech world. My 1st Jeep new was a CJ-7 renegade 258 I-6 112 Hp and it was peppy lol. (Not very heavy) i now have my dream jeep Gobi 392 one battery and no start stop i love it.
Bought my wife a new Wrangler Unlimited Sport Altitude last year. It was a custom order and I was disappointed that the 3.6l V6 was not standard. I thought that engine would be the best for overall reliability. It could have been special ordered but was going to cost another $1k. We agonized a bit but ended up going with the 2.0l turbo (also no E-torque in '21 - was happy about that). After 12k miles, I am extremely impressed with the power and overall acceleration of this engine. Further, I am shocked by how good the fuel economy is. She never gets less than 22 driving around town and easily gets mid 20s on the highway. I believe the EPA rating of 21 City/24 Hwy/22 combined is quite conservative.
New to the channel. I like the informative content. New to the Jeep world and will never not own one now. Own a 2014 JKU Rubicon on 3 " lift and 35s. Such a fun vehicle.. Keep up the good work..
Man I have ordered a 2024 Rubicon 3.6 and as a first time jeep owner the 3.6 just made sense. Now after watching this video im really second guessing myself.
I got the 2.0 for the same reasons back in 2020. 👍🏼 I never got mileage like you but it does pretty well for 37’s and stock gears. Can’t say I regret not getting the V6. Been watching your videos since way back then. Keep up the great content.
Hey Matt, gotta tip my hat to you, your content, and your well-deserved upward trajectory with this channel. I *knew* you looked familiar, turned out it was from at least two different places! I work in the live streaming world on the engineering side of things, and for whatever it's worth, you're kicking butt and taking names with this content, pacing, production, viewer interaction... everything! Can't wait to watch this channel skyrocket. I recently picked up a 392XR (after an 8 month wait), and am currently spec'ing a 2dr JL build with the 2.0 for my fiancee. A couple questions for you: 1) Do you anticipate the factory adding dealer options (sometime soon, or ever?) for dual-door on the newer colors? Follow up - is there a "minimum" trim level we'll want to consider to be able to have the half doors? She really wants an Earl JL with half doors, but it appears we can't get that quite yet. Any insight would be super appreciated :) 2) With the announcement of the Recon and the continuing success of the 4xe, I'm anticipating my next jeep after the 392 will be a fully electric Wrangler. That's a ways away I know, but it'll be super fun. In the meantime, I really like the idea of having the 2dr 2.0 to balance out the monster 392 for around town/commuting, or ya know, when I don't want to wake the neighbors. Do you feel the 2.0 is a decent choice for that balance? Thanks again for all your hard work, and for encouraging the community to get out there and earn ours!
I really appreciate the kind words! Ryan and I do our best to make great content every week! As far as the limited colors getting half doors, I don’t see it happening in the future, there isn’t a minimum trim to get them, certain lower trims can only get standard uppers though! I have the 2.0 and love it, it’s a great commuting engine especially in the 2 door!
I bought my first Jeep in January 2021, a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport, 4 door, With a 2.0 Turbo 8 speed auto tranny. I'm getting 26 MPG average, unless I am pulling my 19' lightweight Toy-hauler, from here 1,000 miles, then up into the Appalachian Mountains, then I get 13 MPG average.
Love your videos! I am a first time Jeep buyer, had a 2023 Granite Gray Rubicon on order. Was not super in love with color and lack of Xtreme package. I was on the fence about canceling my order, really wanted a High Velocity Yellow with Xtreme package...Low and behold I come across this video and took it as a sign to get the Jeep I really wanted! Now the waiting game!
Love the videos man . Keep up good work. I have 21 rubicon 2door 6spd . If I could have got the 2 liter with manual I prob would have . Best of luck with the new rig.
I agree with much of what you said, I too have owned many jeeps from a 1950 CJ3 flatfender with a chevy V-8 to my 2021 Jl wrangler unlimited. This engine is surprising, but the surprise I didn't like was at 10 months and 4,000 miles, the cloud of steam coming up from under my hood at a red light, and the stream of water running out from under it when I parked. Apparently, 3 little bolts at the thermostat housing ? loosen up, and it is a fairly frequent report in the jeep forums. Fortunately, the dealer got to it quickly, it was a simple fix, and I was back on the road after one day. Other than that I really like this engine and my jeep
I just bought a 2022 Wrangler Rubicon 2.0L. I was hesitant at first but after driving both the 2.0 turbocharged model and the 3.6 v-6, and what I’ve found out about the V-6, there was no question. I had thought about the 392, but since my wife will be the primary driver, and I already have a Hemi in my ‘20 Ram Limited, I figured she’d like the 2.0, and she does. I’m have power steps put on it on Monday, she’s short on one end. And I recently installed the trays and cell phone holders you had recommended, she likes those too. My Rubicon came with the Mopar rubber floor mats instead of the carpet floor mats, which I’m happy about. We ordered white with white roof panels and fenders.
After reading some of the comments Matt about how peppy the 2.0l is versus the 3.6 a good video might be to compare all three engines currently available. 2.0l, 3.6l e-Torque, and 3.6l. I think some people may not realize what the actual e-torque system provides (outside of assuming its a headache and more parts) as far as low end grunt.
Matt! You're really good at this...thank you! Looking forward to watching as you continue to grow and find even greater success! I'm driving a 4Xe Rubicon at the moment. Absolutely love it, but I've had one serious system failure episode recently. The issue has been resolved, but it has me thinking that simpler may be better. Thinking about the diesel for fuel economy and longevity, so I'm curious how you'd compare the 2.0 with the diesel. My apologies if you've already compared these two...maybe I just haven't seen it!
Interested to see how the tuning goes. I have the 2.0 as well and have the SuperChips tune from a TrailDash3. The tune made a big difference for me in day to day driving. It made it even more enjoyable to drive. I'm interested to hear how the euro tune works out. Looking forward to the video!
Picking up my 2.0L on Thursday. Glad you made this video I was originally hesitant as well. Can’t wait to see what you do with the build! Will you be taking this jeep to Smokey mountain jeep invasion?
Nice review, interesting information. When I got my JL with the 3.6 8 speed, the dealer played down the 2.0 quite a bit. All my friends that have the 3.6 love them so when the dealer gave it a meh rating I went with the 3.6. I have to say, no complaints on my choice. Enjoying your channel, went and watched all your videos. 👍
I have a 2018 2 door JL rubicon with the 2 liter and e-torque. I primarily drive country roads and not much freeway or highway. It’s not uncommon to average 26 mpg. I’ve had no mechanical issues at just under 30,000 miles. It’s almost hilarious how quick it will go and how squirrely it can get if you stomp on it; arguably way faster than a tall, short wheel base 4x4 on solid axles with 33” tires needs to be. My only complaint is that this drivetrain sounds like a strangled Hoover vacuum.
You are getting better gas mileage with the 2.0T but only use premium. My 2015 3.6 is averaging 19.0 city and highway using regular and still running strong with 80k and no issues. Premium in my state is about a $1.10 a gallon more than regular. With a 22.5 gallon tank on the four door, you'll save around $25 each fill up using regular vs premium. With the 2.0T you'll get around an extra 67 miles on the 22.5 gallon using premium but you'll still save with the 3.6 using regular. But then again we don't buy jeep wranglers to worry about gas prices. Enjoy!
Matt i have a 2022 gladiator i have a 3.6 in I'm happy with it, I just got a 2022 explorer it has 300 hp. It's a 2.0 four cylinder with a turbo i can't believe how fast it is off the line, i will definitely be getting 4 cylinder engine in the next jeep
Wife got the 2.0L I went with the 3.6L E-Torque. She likes the way the Turbo feels coming from a Taurus SHO and I don't ever see anyone compare the two motors so I decided I'd give the 3.6 E-Torque a shot as I couldn't get any solid good or bad information on it and I'll also say we are both first time Jeep owners she commutes and well I will probably beat mine up a bit out on the trails. I don't think either will disappoint personally and if I ever have massive issues I'd pry eventually do a Hemi Swap because honestly looking at some of the companies and the DIY aspect it doesn't seem overall to expensive to do either way. We also both went with High Velocity also it's an eye sore and we both love it plus isn't a Jeep supposed to be a crazy color!
I have the 2018 2.0 on 33s in mojito w/ hd bumper ... no offroading roads close by ... but i find some cool back roads to drive it on ... it's really sweet. Drop it into 3rd gear to get good engine responsiveness w/ the triptronic shifter!
Hey Matt. I have a 2019 JLU Sahara 2.0 Turbo etorque with 86K miles. I've upgraded to Dana 44s, 4.88 gears, 37" tires on a Teraflex 3.5" lift. Its been a good motor, and I'm hoping to take it well over 100K. I'm averaging only around 16mpg, however. I do have a roof rack and awning that adds wind drag, but still, I wish I could do a little better in the mpg department. I do have a concern about the 48 volt etorque system in terms of longevity, but I guess time will tell. I'd love to hear from anyone who has 100k plus miles on an etorque..
I have a 2021 Wrangler JL 2.0 LTR. I just got back from a long road trip to California and other states. I drove a total of 5184 mi. I drove mountain roads, deserts, etc. I averaged 26.4 mpg on the overall trip, believe it or not and driving 75 mph on the express ways, but much slower on mountain roads and deserts. This is my first Jeep Wrangler and I'm thrilled with the overall performance.
got the 4xe, about 9 months in and 21k km. love it. No issues yet. basically is the same engine. The torque from the electric motor smooths out any turbo lag. Would I keep it 10 years ? probably not, for that - get a Toyota
