That second one is stupid simple but I have never been shown it jamming the hip like that. Will try.

I probably should have shown the reason why I’m pushing on the hip instead of reaching for a collar tie or an underhook. There are some really simple counters to those positions that can put you in a bad spot very quickly.

Great video. That last one for instance, I believe that is a real world application (bunkai) for the karate low block. The way one does it in kata where one «loads» the arms and then turns around and «executes» it. What do you think about that?

Great and short video, btw any suggestions on how to catch the leg while minimizing the force on impact from the kick? I find the 2nd one harder
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
Change your level slightly downward so the kick lands on your butt instead of your thigh, and take a tiny step diagonally forward and to the right (for a right leg kick... opposite for a left kick) Hook over the top of your opponent’s leg with your wrist, don’t try to catch with your hand. Exhale slightly and brace for impact. And spend time every day toughening up so a leg kick isn’t the end of the world if you miss.

Interesting, great video as always but seeing the clinch work, specifically the way the hands are the and rotations kinda remind me of some Kung Fu or Wushu forms. Hello Ramsey, love your videos, keep up the amazing work! I don't know if you've read this comment by now since I posted it on another one of your videos but I'll post it again just in case since I'm interested in knowing whether this particular style provides stable bases for a further study on self defense styles (there are a few books written by the man behind it and others that resemble his background) or even just good things to know during a street fight or not. I know how many comments you read so I know its probable you have already read it or you will read this, so I'll refrain from asking this question again. The style in question is called defendu or gutter fighting, I know you have already given your opinion about krav maga and some other similar styles but I consider this to be a one of a kind thing because of its origin and appliances (created by William Ewart Fairbairn a royal marine and Shanghai policeman with over 30 years of experience who allegedly had over 600 street fights under his belt and taught to the SOE and the precursor of the CIA, the OSS, during WW2) I was wondering if you could break down this video about this style like you've done with others (for obvious reasons I don't think most of this can be tried at a gym though), but something important to have in mind is that, by Fairbairn's own words, these are only for emergencies when you're caught without a gun or a knife "foolishly or otherwise". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_hIdkgd0Hrw.html

the first sweep its like a "De ashi barai" from judo?
@sushirice6751
@sushirice6751 3 года назад
I’m very nooby at martial arts but I’m guessing the main things to why sweeping works and why you need to pay attention to the upper half is how weight is distributed in the body The legs are the pillars holding you up so when you tilt the upper half to sweep you force one leg to carry more weight then the other then sweeping the leg holding more weight to the opposite direction to where your pushing you ensure they fall? Or just keep all their weight on one leg and keep twist so the person you’re sweepings center of mass is no longer supported by the legs? I’m probably getting lots of things wrong so please tell me correct me
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
You can’t sweep a weight-bearing leg. The purpose of your sweeping foot is to block the other guy from taking a step that would otherwise balance him.

I never really had a go at mma or thai boxing but everytime i see that thai boxing clinch i just think ko uchi makikomi.. i think a few of the makikomi throws would work .. some of the easiest no ge throws, though i don't think ive ever seen one used .. never seen it on the ground in bjj either ... am i missing something
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
Well, in Muay Thai, you’re not going to see throws and takedowns that put both fighters on the floor. A nak muay wouldn’t score for a kouchi makikomi- they would probably just get a warning from the referee to stand back up. In BJJ, that’s a risky move, since the bottom man is one step away from securing backmount- with one hook in, and head and arm control. Wrestlers will often use a similar, but importantly different I side leg reap as a alternative finish to a double leg.

These are sweeps, not throws. The “counter” to being swept in the clinch is to actively control the inside of the clinch. As far as what to do if someone catches a leg kick- continue rotating violently in the direction of the kick to free your leg. I’d have to show you that one, because it’s easy to muck that one up.

so the force of the techniques doesn't come from the sweeping foot itself, but is there any advantage to putting force behind it? also what do you think about mantis boxing leg hook type sweeps? from a lay trainers perspective they look risky, and since they could very well end that way, should be treated as a kind of sacrifice throw, but from a disadvantaged clench i suppose that might have its use. your thoughts? leg hook video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-msxkCHRGX1c.html
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
Nope. Beginners always get frustrated with sweeps because they’re trying to kick the legs. The violent force is in the upper body- particularly from the control of your opponent’s head. Those takedowns you linked me to aren’t sweeps. That’s just basic leg reaping on a shot.

Sweeps can be really frustrating to beginners. In fact, a lot experienced fighters never even bother to learn them because they’re often taught so poorly. Most people focus on the movement of the sweeping foot, which is the least important thing of all. You might notice a couple of times in this video, my sweeping foot doesn’t even move, it just blocks the outside of Eddie’s foot so he can’t step away and balance.

@@sportmuaythaiv1045 Not once was a leg placed behind the opponent's leg. None of these techniques are trips. The side of the foot is not the back of the leg. Sliding the side of your foot against the side of your opponent's foot while they transfer their weight is the very definition of a sweep. A sweep is not a strike with the leg or knee. If you want to pull rank about who trained with who, I trained with Lumpinee Boxing Stadium champion "Rak" Channon Sinsub. He taught me a great a deal, including 2 of these 4 sweeps. Lumpinee Boxing Stadium rules explicitly forbid "judo or wrestling throws and takedowns" (exact phrase) not sweeps. I am now convinced either you do not know what a sweep is, or that you have difficulty translating what happens on a 2D screen into 3D concepts.
