It was nice to be reminded of this. I had an awful shoot yesterday and it felt like every part of my process broke down. But I remembered the subconscious aim and the focus on the middle of the target and the arrows consistent went there even with everything else feeling like crap. The brain knows.

Jake, a tip I was given when aiming off was to imagine a green dot on the target face where I want to aim. That dot is bright green (in my imagination) because it contrasts so well with all target faces. The size of the dot may be the size of the gold or the ten ring. When I set up to aim off, the imagined green dot emphasizes that I am aiming off. I added to this practice a mantra-like positioning process because as you point out the position of that dot varies with the wind, so in the background I repeat the dot's position as "9 o'clock red" languidly so as to not create anxiety, but that keeps the dot where I decided to put it. Also another point regarding looking at the target rather than the aperture is that the target is stationary, if you look at the aperture, its movement alone will cause anxiety. Looking at a stationary point of aim is calming and then also sets up the aiming off technique described above, which I cannot do if I look at the aperture as the frame of reference is no longer still.

Wow, I found by kind of accident that pushing the bow slightly I'm getting accurate shots. I thought this was just me, i already know the shoulder position while holding the bow, you explained that perfectly. But pushing the bow that for me was more a mental thing, kind saying in my head " you're going there" and throwing it with my bow aswell as letting go of string with a smooth pull threw. Wow thanks Jake, really didn't know this was actually a thing.😂

In pistol shooting you want to be "surprised" by the shot and I've found it's the same with recurve aiming and executing the shot. Basically what you "see" is history. By the time your eyes have translated the light entering the eye into nerve signals and those nerve signals are processed by the brain and converted to all the signals to release your string you are easily a tenth of a second further with the bow having moved away from what you registered. But the bow/pistol is moving between the extremes of your aiming pattern so on average it's in the middle the most. So a "random" release has a better chance of being in the middle than you seeing that you are in the middle. The challenge of course is to make the aiming pattern as small as possible but this form series does a good job explaining how to achieve that goal. :D

About tip #3, aiming off. One useful exercise for this is playing archery Black Jack. Get some friends and try to see who can score a 21 first. Or some other score of your choosing. This will teach you to aim at other points on the target face other than the X.

Your choice of sight pin can make a lot of difference if you're having trouble focusing on the target. When using the sight pin that came stock on my new Shibuya sight I just couldn't focus on the target, but after switching to a 12 mm transparent Beiter aperture with just a ring insert (no pin) it was a piece of cake.

Jack Humm I am also curious of a few things as they relate to the different style of shooting. For instance He shoots true center shot (with parallel walled arrows) and his anchor is low and under the jaw line. This works great with site pins but causes a huge gap in using arrow to aim. I am courious where his string alignment is in reference to string blur? With bare bow we tend to have higher anchors and use the arrow in our site picture especially for gap shooting whereas he uses site pins. I wonder if he sees much of the arrow itself? I shoot 3 under and trying his anchor not working for me I would need realy long arrows to reduce the gap. I use the info I can incorporate but defitnly some difference in shooting style when it comes anchors and aiming but basicly his site pin would translate to the top of arrow in gap shooting and the term shooting off we use all the time in gap shooting as in aiming at a leaf that is below a rabbit to hit the rabbit and keeping your focus on the leaf through the shot. So I can relate to much of what he is showing but I simply want to become as accurate as possible for hunting and thinking of trying 3d with bare bow.

Hi Jake, speaking of eye focus, would you consider covering optics in archery in a bit more detail. I’ve been having trouble lately with my target splitting in two visually, and I’ve received a lot of feedback that it could be alignment, draw length, head rotation etc. I’d love to hear about how you would address this problem from the standpoint of NTS. Than you!

I have 7 acres of flat grassland behind my house. I mow obout half of it. I've always wanted to build a range. In fact....I think about it every time I'm on the mower. The only problem the targets are at my west. Houses are to the north and south. Still they are far enough away...but I just don't want to make them nervous. So I will just have to deal with the afternoon sun. .....I'm thinking of a 4x4 structure about four feet wide with a small roof. Between the two vertical posts will be a simple shelf to support three straw bales. There will be a compression mechanism to tighten up the gaps between the bales. Bales in Ohio are about $5.00 and easily replaceable. I want to keep the center of the bale from the ground around 50 inches and centered after compression. I'm planning to use about 6 inches of compression. That should close the gap between the bales. The structure will also be adapted so hanging bag targets can be used. But at over $100 the straw would be more economical and I could therefore save more money to build more targets shelter/stands.
@kajala11
@kajala11 3 года назад
I use the square foam floor mats that innerlock from Harbor Tools (4 for $8) to attach to the hay bales with long metal meat scewers. Add two rows of the 4 innerlocking mats so you have them doubled up. Attach the vinal target face to the mats.😊 Cheap & works great! At this point you can then use regular stacked haybales.🎯
@kajala11
@kajala11 3 года назад
Secondly, another cheap shelter is a 10x10' straightleg popup canopy. Lower it when it's not in use & remove the canopy during off seasons to prolong its life. I bolted my tent to a 10'x10' 4" PVC pipe base, use the thicker pipes. The PVC corners are held together using a wood fence panel bolted into each ajoining PVC pipe then cut to fit the 45° corner angle (the tent legs are then bolted onto the wood boards). Also, bolting on the boards keeps the PVC frame together without glue so you can disassemble it (to repurpose the pipes later or to transport them). The base is very secure for the tent on windy days & if you bolt on a loop chain at the PVC corners (on the opposing sides) it makes it portable to move around your property & use as cover elsewhere. The PVC pipes slide easily along the ground & entire setup is weather proof. If you choose to do this buy a decent canopy tent...don't go cheap, with these tents you get what you pay for. Albeit, the canopy will eventually need to be replaced & can be bought separately from the frame.😊 I selected an Anti-pooling frame & tent brand.

Jake... the reason Recurve is subconscious and the compound is conscious, is arrow speed. You can influence the shot after release only if the arrow is still in the bow....recurve it is, compound its gone....my scientific theory and pretty sure it is correct, I shoot both. Another Awesome lesson, once again. thanks

I'm not qualified like Jake but essentially yes. This is an aiming method that translates across for non mechanical archery in general. It even actually applies to mechanical archery and even shooting but to much less of a degree. The information in this most definitely applies the same to barebow especially if you are a string walker.
