Want to catch bigger fish this Summer? Here are 4 tricks you can try to catch more fish on jigs. Whether you have crystal clear water, muddy water, or somewhere in between, there is a trick here that will help you catch bigger bass this Summer!
If you lean toward finesse fishing, pay close attention to the first two tips. Downsizing to a micro or finesse jig will get you quality bites on a clear water fishery. If you like to power fish and haven't tried stroking a jig, its time to experience some of the most brutal strikes you'll ever get on a jig. If you like flipping and punching, don't forget to try the jig to upsize your catch and increase your hookup ratio.
Below you'll find links to the exact jigs, trailers, and equipment Matt discussed in the video. We've also included our favorite colors for each. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Jig fanatic here ...in my past 30 years of jig fishing, 95% of the time I go compact, and also go compact in my trailer. What I have recently concluded, I think my jig represents a tadpole, leech, cicada, or other creatures or insects that is "dessert"! It gives me 100percent confidence, and makes it easy because black is magical! ....no fiddling with other colors or trailers, and straight to the juice!

I live in an area with many creeks and rivers that have some serious mood swings and are often muddy but fairly shallow. That compact profile in a dark color is my go-to and always gets me bites, regardless of the season. Tight lines man!

Not a jig fish, but my nephew caught his pb smallie(2.44) on a ned rig. What you said about shade is very true. When its hot out, look for any shade, especially in deep waters. I saw that the dock we were on had some shade. We were fishing clear water to, probably 20ft or so of visiblility. So i told my nephew to cast his ned rig out into the shade and slowly work it back. He hooked up within the first 2 or 3 little hops. He fought that thing like a champ.

Great info! I switched up from the Keitech to the Picasso little spotty. The Keitech bait keeper is part of the molded head and would break off. The Picasso is 100 percent tungsten with tungsten weed guards. The Picasso just holds up better. It took me awhile to get away from the football jig and switch to the pitching jig but I’m glad I did. The pitching jig comes through heavy grass so much better. Matt you giving away secrets. Haha I also do two subtle pulls with the rod during a drag as well. Each technique has is place.

In Ohio the heat is out the door. Fall is officially here. No more 90°+ days. Evenings are getting into the low 60s. I really wish there was more Fishing channels on RU-vid that don't only cater to the South. When ever a fishing RU-vidr who don't live up North, they always say these baits work up North also. 80% of the time no, no it don't. I lived in the south for over a decade and sorry but when I hear shit like it works up North too. It's very irritating especially times when it's almost or over 100° in the south and in the 70s up North. When you have that kind difference in temp. Fishing is completely different. But this is a problem for most RU-vid fishing channels. They don't really care about covering the whole country. Only where they are.

Thank you for this, I have a couple of jigs that I’ve been wanting to try out. One of the issues I run into is snagging. I’m limited to fishing on the banks at the lake I’m at. Majority of the lake has downed trees and submerged branches. It’s difficult to jig fish (at least for me) in areas that have those lay downs because there’s a high probability that my hook will snag. I constantly texas rig and at times, it still happens. If you have any advice or tips on ways to reduce the amount of snagging that could occur, that would be helpful. Thanks for this video
@svanginault

My swim jigs are my go to for fishing lay downs and heavy cover. I can cast those things with confidence in the heaviest of cover and hardly ever get hung up
@funkymojo111
@funkymojo111 Год назад
When I am fishing areas in high probability of getting snagged, I pay very close attention to the weed guard stiffness; weak guards for more open water. Also try using the banjo line snap and/or heavier line. I use monofilament because the stretch can sometimes get me the slack I need to come loose. Last option is to wrap the line around my pliers, turn my back to the snag and slow pull.

What if all I have are spin casting combos? Can I use your same techniques with them for those different jig setups? Only one of my combos has 100% fluorocarbon the rest has between 6:00 and 8 lb monofilament. I really don't think my setups were really meant for fluorocarbon or braid. I was thinking of trying to tape some braid line to my spin casting reel so that it doesn't rip off my spool, I'm not sure if that would work though. I'd hate to have to go out and just get a braid ready reel. I switched to fluorocarbon the other day hearing that that was really what one of the bass fisherman that I subscribe to said you need to definitely have at least one set up with fluorocarbon, and they said it had to be at least 15 lb test. I bought 10 lb at Walmart and then I saw that and went back and switched it for 15. I don't know what I did wrong, but all I did was get Big Bird's nest knots every time I tried to cast because apparently I had too much line on my reel. I always know that the more line you have on the better it casts, but not so much I guess if it's too heavy for the reel, it just kept on unspooling for me, and creating a not so pleasant fishing atmosphere, so I went back to one of my other combos with just straight mono on it and I caught four largemouth bass immediately (more or less like in a 15 minute time span) and I was fishing upon, that's in Florida. The water was an aqua greenish color. Not too dirty, clear for like the first 10 ft out so I could see some things lurking out there. Also used basically just a long stick warm and wacky rigged it, and caught all four fish on that only. I started at 6:00 in the morning and I went to around 9:30. Seems like the only time I can get a decent bite anymore right now is early in the morning just as the sun is coming up. Thanks for all you do sorry this was so long I appreciate everything I'm taking notes all the time, I had to rewind this video several times to write certain things down so I can go out and get them! God bless!

So I am new to fishing for more than just fun. Big time budget. Lews open face xfinity rod. I just can’t have three or four different set ups right now. I do have a smaller lews crappie rig I use for smaller lures. Both set ups are great for the price. What am I supposed to do if I can’t buy a 200$ set up. I feel like the same theory I use in music fully applies here .I have been playing guitar 25 years. I can play a 100$ takamine or my high end Taylor and both sound great. To the ear the listener never knows the difference. So am I right ? Is it more about technical ability than gear?

I firmly believe that ability is more important than gear. That being said, it's nice to have equipment you can depend on. One of the things I like about TB is their tradition of sharing their gear preferences at various price points; they have done $100 dollar combo Buyers Guides. I'm primarily a bank angler, so I stay away from high-end gear; there are just too many hazards lurking along the shoreline for me to feel comfortable with 400-500 dollars' worth of fishing equipment in my hands. Let me share a couple of their past videos; hopefully they'll help answer some of your questions. Matt did a "cheap vs expensive" video about three years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bCjo2cuZRWI.html . Also, here is one of the aforementioned $100 dollar combo Buyers Guides (check out the other price point guides if you haven't): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QE2vm7eL2PQ.html . Hope that helps a little bit. Edit: One more for you: Matt's Top 5 Rods for Bass Fishing. I thought this was a fantastic break-down for how to build your combo collection. Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5vhH7U2IOUI.html .

As the water gets hot (over 89 degrees), I do find they struggle and are less likely to chase a lure. I have been trying everything for the past week and managed to catch one bass late at night on a large senko just sitting on the bottom in 15-20 feet of water. I fished for hours over several days and only got an ocasional light bump on senkos but only one bass really took the worm. I also realized I needed to wait 10-15 seconds until the fish started to swim away before setting the hook, especially on the large worms. I will try a jig again but worried that with this heat, the bass would not have the energy to go after it. Your thoughts?
@charlescooper5248
@charlescooper5248 Год назад
It can be tough in the heat, going super slow is a great option, but trying to draw a reaction bite may be more helpful! Hop your baits, put heavier weights on so they sink faster, anything to make your bait fall faster has always been very helpful for me.
@mxbass1036
@mxbass1036 Год назад
If you're fishing 15-20 feet it might not be 89 degrees down there. Try a deep crank or be more aggressive with a big worm ( ribbon tail ). Just my thoughts.
@johnowens7435
@johnowens7435 Год назад
@@charlescooper5248 they are so lethargic and cautious now that they mouth or lightly pick up the bait a few times but not enough to set a hook. If they feel a weight, they drop it quickly so big worms fished slowly weightless and waiting until they really take it in for 5-10 seconds or longer seems to be the only thing working.
@johnowens7435
@johnowens7435 Год назад
@@mxbass1036 they appear to be too sluggish in this heat to chase anything. I have tried deep crank baits, rattle traps, lipless crankbaits, square bills and even Jack hammers which normally work but not a bite.

No one knows the technical information about rods, reels, and baits more than Matt Allen. An example is how off the cuff he comes up with how the Concept C reel is 1 oz heavier than another more expensive reel, but half the price. Tackle Junkie? Tackle Expert!

Fishing from a kayak so number of rods I can take is limited. If you had to pick one rod to throw any of those jigs up to 3/4 oz which would it be?
@oldeschoolbob1022
@oldeschoolbob1022 Год назад
That Braillist he talks about handles up to 1 oz. jigs. If that's too pricey, the St. Croix Bass-X linked as "Budget all-around" in the description also does up to 1 . Hope that helped. Good luck out there!

Great content you definitely have helped make me and others become better fisherman But a $1k+ for a single fishing combo for a non professional or even amateur bass fisherman is VERY difficult to afford let alone justify and Im in the above of top 15% of incomes NOT including my wifes income. And Im not shy when it comes to spending money on my fishing and hunting gear as I have two sons who love to fish as much as I do and fish for all the same species of fish I do and all need set ups that are at least reasonably well suited to that species of fish. Yes we use the same setups for both bass and walleye but different setups for salmon/steelhead and different yet for panfish so I have a very considerable amount of money invested in decent quality rods and reels A $1k-$1.1k dollar set up MIGHT be doable for a guy who ONLY ever bass fishes and has no other equally costly hobbies like I do of bow and firearm hunting AND competitive shooting But myself and my sons fish every chance we get for bass panfish salmon and steelhead (we live from only a short walk to a 40 minute drive from excellent multi species fishing) and although some of our fishing rigs overlap uses slightly a rod that excels for drift fishing egg sacks and skien for salmon and steelhead is pretty ill suited for anything else just as a spinning or even most casting rods well suited for bass wont work at all well for drift fishing for salmon/steelhead luers somewhat but not bait and our panfishing set ups will do OK for bass but the majority of my bass fishing is done in or immediately adjacent to very heavy cover so bass fishing with panfishing rigs are just begging for heartbreak Same for our dedicated night bass fishing rigs which are spooled with 15lb brade aren't nearly as good as my casting setups for for most other applications where braid excels. Im just saying As a dad who has to outfit himself and his sons $1200 can fund all the good quality rods reels and reels we need to be effective and successful fisherman chasing after bass panfish salmon/steelhead and forgot to list catfish as well Just my 2c worth

For the price, those Megabass Orochis have horrible reviews. I trust your recommendations most of the time, but in this case... I'll pass. That Keitech tungsten football jig is money, though! I'll try it with the Zman trailer you recommended.

The reviews you're reading are probably on the older version of Orochi. They were retooled in the last few years and I stand by that recommendation 👍🏼
