Took my 12 year old son fishing yesterday to a notoriously tough fishery (Lake Hopatcong in NJ) we got a few great topwater bites first thing in the morning then it just shut off, completely. We were definitely on the struggle bus. We started throwing everything I could think of, then I eventually rigged us both up with some jigs (he's great with a baitcaster but had to show him how to use a jig) and we tore into em, using techniques and fishing the areas I've learned from y'all....that knowledge turned the day around and it was literally the best day I've ever had at that lake, and honestly one of the best days we have had in a long time...thanks for all the great content you guy's consistently share....it makes a difference.
@@MultiXMeGa that would be a hard lake to kayak in during this time of year. Even in a boat, I struggle from all the wake. Musconetcong, Budd lake, cranberry lake and several others will be more kayak friendly this time of year. Hopatcong is pretty damn big and it's a hard lake to fish.
Stuck to the bank in that same area and the jigs work great. Caught one yesterday in Rockaway flipping pads with a dirty jigs flipping jig 3/4oz. One of these days I’ll get a boat and venture out on Lake Hopatcong
Unrivaled fishing channel by far… I’ve learned more from Matt and Tim than all other fishing channels combined. Thanks again for the thorough, well presented content on an unbelievably consistent basis.
I’ve been studying the TB videos for the last 2 years on jig fishing and I finally developed confidence in a buckeye lures G-man Ballin out jig and man wow. It feels like they are chewing on this thing lol. My favorite is a black and blue 3/8oz with a Googan baits Krackin craw in ocachobee craw. Thank you guys. The best advice I think I got was ;if you want to learn jig fishing, only take your jig rod and nothing else. Lock it in your hand and don’t put it down until it clicks.
Jigs for me, over the course of one year, went from a bait I would never tie on to I have two dedicated rods with one tied on year round. Once fishing a jig clicks it’s an amazing bait.
I got my jig confidence when I was catching bass around some grass on everything but a jig, figured there wasn't a better time to tie one on and give it a try. Needless to say, I have a jig tied on every time I go out now.
I have zero confidence in a jig, but I have one tied on right now & it's going to stay on rest of summer! Need to learn how to fish one. I literally just tied it on last weekend so perfect timing on your vid! I do fish swing head jigs alot & have ton of confidence in those. Just not standard jig. Caught my new PB Sunday on giant worm she was 26" long 17" in girth a 9lb 3oz largmouth!
Throwing a fb jig offshore is all I want to do in the summer. At least when I'm feeling lazy. It's just so easy and you don't exert much energy yet have a very good chance of catching bigs
I love your channel. I have been watching you and Tim for a couple years now. I bought a fishing kayak 2 years ago and my confidence is really struggling. when I can go anywhere on the lake, and paddle around looking at my 2D sonar it really opened a lot of opportunities for me. But with that being said, I'm struggling to catch fish. you guys have taught me alot about what areas to look for. Your videos on where bass go in certain times of year are awesome. now its just putting in the time on the kayak and catching a few to get the confidence up. keep up the good work guys!
I'd forget the sonar for now and just pick apart the shallow waters. There's always fish that stay shallow and are easier to catch than finding ledges and rockpiles in the middle of nowhere
I’m a huge jig junky!!!! I agree Matt! Reaction Innovations craw has always been my go to trailer. It just gets bites! Always catch decent bass on them paired with a jig!
Determined to catch a bass with a jig 2 days ago on the Columbia River (bank). Never caught any bass on rod/reel/line and jig combo. Nailed a big one at ~4# which as my pb on the Columbia.
This was actually really encouraging, it’s funny I have jigs and never use them and just by watching this video I figured out why. I had that mental block and didn’t realize it! I look forward to getting a big wet tomorrow in a small lake with a bunch of grass and lilies tomorrow!
When I started fishing I found your videos really early, watched your jig fishing videos and they are definitely my confidence bait. I think I've only caught maybe 30 and I'd say 20 were on jigs lol. Haven't caught any on crank baits
I fish a bunch of stuff and get fancy throwing different things depending on conditions and the fishery. Then at the end of the day I switch to a jig and then actually catch them
Just stared fishing jigs this year on purpose because I was clueless about the technique. Started off with the micro jig and nailed them. Going to start working on fishing then big 3/4oz football jigs on my local river for small mouth.
Matt, its super funny cause I swear you made this video almost for me lol because I am one of those guys that 100% knows I should throw a jig and I even had the right idea of when and where but literally never have caught a single fish on one. Closed I came was a blow up near the shoreline on a retrieve but never even hooked the fish. I was super curious though and you rarely ever cover it in any of your videos but with casting rods and jig fishing do you find the Gear Ratio making any impact overall? Thanks for all the advise.
I have a dobyns sam sobi series sam765c flip/pitching stick... and have a 7.3 diawa elite p/f.... Cortland masterbraid 65lb braid, and have been using about a 4ft invizx leader... I love this combo
Thanks for the great content please keep it coming. I cant wait to go spend more money on tackle and go fishing. Any particular weighted head ( less snags) i should use for a more rocky bottom like quarries?
Hey Matt, did you guys get a river/mud boat? Was just curious, saw the new brown deck at beginning of the video. If so, we'd love a tour! Thanks for the best Bass channel on YT.
I've had it for a few years but it doesn't come out in that many videos so it's easy to miss. If you search "tacticalbassin jet boat" you can find an initial tour when we got it and another after we fully modified the hull for shallow water.
Thx for the video. As a bank.angler I havnt caught bass fishing a jig, but I also havnt tried too much because no confidence or knowledge. Thid video helps, but whats missing are the retrieves. What kind of retrieves works best jig fishing from the bank??
Great video as always @tacticalbassin squad!! Hey Matt, Pretty surprised I didn’t see a swim jig in that lineup. Do you tend to not throw swim jigs in the summer?! I absolutely LOVE throwing a jig almost year round now because of your videos from last two years. Keep it up guys!! And gals!!!!
May not have mentioned a swim jig but I guarantee he's swimming his jig😂 That's why he uses arkie style heads they're good multipurpose jigs. U can swim any jig
I went and got a pumpkin jig and threw a similar bate to what you were using on it. Third cast my next time out I caught my personal best large mouth just under 3.5 lbs. Shit works 😂
Jigs are my confidence bait, I've been bass fishing for 30y and probably 60-75% of the bass I've caught have been on a jig, I always have a heavy rod with 65lb braid rigged up with a jig. I never have much luck with that "go to" color. If you're learning how to jig, get you two colors: white and black/blue. They seem to hammer the white jig more than any other color. I almost always have a heavy movement trailer. If you're only getting one color, get a pearl white and you will catch fish.
I don’t know if you have already tried or reviewed the Beast Coast Hustler Hybrid Finesse Jigs? They are an interesting jig, a cross between a traditional finesse jig and a marabou hair jig with a little bit of tinsel thrown in for flash. I really like the elite craw and the bruised colors.
Going out to the Delta Wednesday and apply your wisdom . Any areas you might want to pass on to give a try? I’m a novice fisherman with fisherwoman wife wanting to learn and have fun fishing.
Thanks Matt for all you do for us. I've been watching you and Tim for a number of years now. I always have a Jig tied on . I'm wanting to upgrade to a Megabass Braillist Rod. What is the difference between the Orochi (F5.5-75XX) and the Levante (F5.5-75LV) besides a Hundred Dollar Bill? Thanks!
There's a sensitivity difference between them but the biggest difference is the Orochi is much more crisp throughout. The Levante is a bit more parabolic. Both are great, the Orochi definitely wins out if it's in the budget.
Not jig related, but since it's newest video maybe you will see this. I have a power shot combo for you to try. Jigs / Dropshot make up a large portion of my fishing, so I've tried a lot of things. I know in previous vids you guys said you like the 6'10M Expride for power-shotting when it's not in super heavy cover. I've used both the A and B model as well as a bunch of other rods and I think I finally have the ultimate combo figured out and want you to try it. Matt will like this because it's an MBR, lol. Currently I'm running a Conquest 843c with a Metanium Shallow Water edition reel, reel is running 10-12lb Sunline FC Sniper... only hook I run is 2/0 Owner Covershot HD hook. Lots to throw on it, but we all know how good the MM 6" Fat roboworm is so I have that on about 1/2 the time. Either way just give it a try, it blows the pants off the Exprides and many other rods. Obviously you might not have a SW edition Metanium, but I found 70 size reels make all the difference with this combo... so an Aldebaran or equivalent will do.
For small jigs a love the Booyah Baby Boo jig in 3/16 or 5/16. For a trailer i use Zoom Creepy Crawler twin tail or the Netbait Tiny Paca craw. I have a hard time with large jigs. They bite and spit before I set the hook most of the time.
Jigs have been my fav for over a decade now... which in combination with these videos has resulted in me owning too many jig rods. As far as what you said, the only thing I disagree with is the compact pitching jig. I use 70% Dirty Jigs stuff too and have for a long time, but that jig has always caused problems for me. I'm pretty sure it comes down to the hook bite. I've just resorted to throwing the standard finesse jig if I need it, or I'll cut down the skirt for the smaller profile of the normal casting jig.
You know something crazy before i watched this i set up a jig almost identical to that, i let my buddies son use it in the pond behind the house i was working on and he caught a 5lbr first cast, i was always really intimidated by jigs but have now become more confident with them
How come no one is talking about the jig and worm? I think it shows the bass a totally different presentation that almost no one in the country does. I use either half a trick worm or a ribbon tail and it’ll get hit when craw style trailers don’t, especially in summer
@@Just_A_Name14 get a green pumpkin jig with a chunk trailer and dip the claws in chartreuse. Then go to a bluff wall where the river channel swings next to it and pitch it up against the wall. I had ZERO confidence until earlier this summer and now it’s hard for me to put it down.
Lost my two biggest smallmouth working a jig near wood in a river. One was dead summer, one was early fall. Low warm water and they were tearing it up. Now I'm back in Florida and it's all worms in grass. But I miss flipping laydowns with a jig
I am trying to pick my next jig rod , but cannot decide between the mojo bass, fury, or the bass x. Do you have a preference? I have heard all talked about in multiple videos.
Is jig fishing viable from the bank? At the moment I don't have a boat and ive stuck with Texas rig stick baits, trick worms, flukes, etc.. and wacky rigs, frogs... stuff like that. But I do have some jigs and trailers but I don't use them much because I've always thought that you had to have a boat to make jigs work
I sent this once but i have followed you and tryed what you have said but one thing i dont catch any thing and no fish finder another thing you need to come lake heartwell and teach the fish how to bite the bait lol 😊😅
But hey if I had my name on a jig I'd probably push it too whether it was accurate information or not LOL I'm not trying to say there's a conspiracy or anyting.
That’s good news. I don’t wanna say how many blades jigs I lost yesterday on the River oh and two 13 dollar patrollers. That one was more of a personal error
There's something wrong with the Dirty Jigs compact pitchin jigs in the hematoma color, I ordered some in both 3/8 and 1/2. All the 3/8 size were fine but the 1/2 sizes were wrong, I got 2 1/2 jigheads that were right and the rest were 3/8 size jigheads packed into a 1/2 labeled package. Even the replacements TW is sending are 3/8 size jigheads in a 1/2 size labeled package.
Would you guys recommend the Brailist for also pitching and flipping soft plastics in grass? Curious if it could be a great rod for doing more then one technique
I can catch fish on a swing head and the sleeper craw but I never get bit on a jig even if I work it the same way, do you have a hint as to how that works, maybe my fish dont like the skirt
Don't feel bad Vincent. I was 5'6" now most days 5'4 or 5'3 depending on how compressed my spine is. I found that the 7'0 St Croix Mojo Dock Sniper rod now for my jig fishing. It's light has a great backbone and enough tip fro flipping pitching and skipping. I can use it all day without an issue and set the hook great.
I’m sorry to hear about your back and spine problems. I was in a really bad car accident about 6 years ago and a broke my back. I believe it was an L1 lumbar fracture. I haven’t really checked my height lately I might be an inch or two shorter as well. Thanks for the rod suggestion. St. Croix makes great rods!
Thanks Matt. I really like the Expride rods. I have one casting and one spinning and they’re both my favorites. They are so lightweight, sensitive, and comfortable to fish with all day. Matt and Tim are right about them fishing above their price. I just hope Shimano isn’t listening 😆
The lake that I fish on has a soft bottom and when I throw a jig it seems to sink into it. Will it still work or should try to find harder bottom areas? There aren’t many on our lake
