Here's my four month update on the Ecovacs Deebot N79 robot sweeper. Is it worth buying and how has it held up? I also take a look at what maintenance is involved when owning a robot sweeper.

Yes I've bought the Ecovacs Deepot N79S after watching your video. The small problem for me is the button ''Back to the station'' missing on the robot. You have to use your smartphone to do your robot back ''home'' after empty it. I'm really happy with my new robot and it's thanks to you :P

It does a surprisingly good job at cleaning🌼 It picks up small dirt, hairs, everything. Does edges well and even cleans the chair feet better than expected. I have also very clean carpets and runs. The quality of the device is quite good, its not rugged by any means, but I don't see any vulnerabilities making it prone to breakage. It hops up on my medium pile carpet and even hops up on rugs that are on the carpet

You can easily wash the white filter and the black sponge too. I even use dawn on it and let everything dry completely and its ready to go again.

Thank you for this follow up info. It seems to me that it is no more maintenance than my big, bulky heavy vacuum, but much easier to access. I will now get rid of the big one. Thanks for helping me make my decision. :)

The Deebot 79S doesn't get stuck on the stairs. So they've improved it. Bought one and loved it so much we bought another for our full walkout basement. We're in our 60s and regular vacs are hard to haul around. Robot vacs make a great gift for a disabled or elderly family member. They're much more affordable now too. BTW, I haven't bought new filters. I find they wash very well. So if you're strapped for cash and can't afford the accessory pack, no problem. Wash them and they're like new.

I have the same vacuum and it was a game changer. I have had the same problems and I also notice that it doesn't like operate in direct sunlight. The accesory bundle I bought came with this great little tool to clean the main brush with.

I've a DN622/N79. I just use some McGuiars plastic polish on the front bumper to keep the 'lens' clean.

I wash my Deebot filters when I do my weekly clean. That way everything functions optimally and I don't need to change the filters so often. I empty the dust bin after every use as it tends to get pretty full.

I just bought this for 150 with tax to go into my kitchen. While I like my neato d3. I was tired of hauling the neato back and forth between main areas. So I figured a cheap robot vacuum would help alot in my kitchen high traffic areas.

The owner's manual has a recommended cleaning schedule for the robot. I have a dog and run mine twice a day everyday and clean out the bin every other day and clean the filters every week. Doing so less often means the filters have to be changed more often. I've had the n79 for 6 months and it works really well. Going to upgrade though since it doesn't have room mapping and struggles cleaning my house in a single charge.

The black sponge piece of the filter can be rinsed and reused. The main brush - I use a flea comb to clean the black part as I run it under water. And after that it looks new again

For my small side brushes I leave them soaking in soap and water and they end up looking like new Sometimes I’ll use disinfectant cleaner

It probably hangs up by the stairs because it's on a dark carpet. It knows it can't go forward and dark carpet makes it think it can't go back. Loved watching it drag the rug around. How many times did you blame the dog for moving them?

Thanks for the video. FYI, when using Ruggies, you really need to use the sticky pieces (basically stickers) to put on the rug and create a glossy surface. They hold rugs down great if you use those, otherwise not so much.

I have cleaned all the filters every time I empty the box , I haven't replaced anything in 2 years I've had the vaccum.

The reason it's getting locked up is that raised strip/lip on the top of the stairs most likely. That is super uncommon.

very good video. maybe the difference of topography between the stair edge moulding, the wood floor and the adjacent carpeting are more variables than Deebot can handle. i use a comb to get out the matted hair in the small brush areas. works great!

My deebot N79S sometimes stops at the edge of the stairs too. It doesn't fall off but doesn't turn around and continue either. My carpet extends to the edge and continues downward wrapping the edge. I thought that may have confused the robot. But your edge is just the floor. So edge alone is the reason it stops there.

Air compressor with an air nossle will make quick work of cleaning that brush. Will be good as new in about 10-15 seconds.

we've had 2 of these--first one lasted just 3 months(they replaced it pretty quickly and easily), wouldn't stop spinning; second one won't go properly, first it kept beeping, we cleaned it, changed the brushes, it won't charge, it won't go! maybe others have better luck! I won't get another! and they won't return our call-the message is always that they are busy!! and because this was a replacement, we have no invoice!!

Sorry to hear that. I wonder if you could at least sell it on ebay for parts. I would almost be interested in it just to see if i could get it to work or as backup parts.

If you haven't already tried, disconnect the battery for about 10-20 seconds, reconnect, wait about 10-20 seconds more and then try it. Mine will sometimes act goofy and this always resets it. Also, mine has a sensor under the front swivel wheel, it gets hair under it and blocks the sensor which makes it act funny. If it is like mine, the wheel just snaps out to clean under it.

Thank you for this helpful video. As a newbie, I had no idea what the inside looks like and how the device is cleaned. One question I have is about the wifi. Will this (or other) robo vacuums operate without smartphones, androids, and so on? I do not have wifi and do not want it.

My wife just bought the 79S and it got here today... I have a large dog that sheds alot and there's already some hair around the brush from the first use, but they did include a small brush for cleaning the wheels which includes a small razor edge for cutting the hairs wrapped around... I'm curious if you have any trim pieces running between rooms in your house, and if it has trouble getting past them? I have one that is from the hall to the front room, and another from the hall to the kitchen, and on the first run it would go IN to those areas over the runner, but bumped it from the other side and didn't get out, at least on the first try or two I witnessed.. I feel like I'm going to have to babysit it or pick it up off the floor to charge it after it dies unable to escape one of those rooms. Is this a problem for you, or anyone else?

The stair problem could likely be fixed by moving that rug. Mine has a similar problem when it goes from dark to light to dark (such as rug wood drop off)

Deebots are physically well made .. However after owning a D35 and Slim will never buy another. No it's not stupid and misses half your room; the problem is software gremlins. After 7 months my D35 decided after 5 minutes of work off a full charge: it had a low batteries and kept that opinion that 5 minutes was all it could do even after new battery pack.. 1.5 years later my Deebot Slim shut down after 1-2minutes of working and beeps for it's dustbin, till a reset then do it again 2 minutes later, repeat. The bin switch was working perfectly, the internals of both vacuums upon autopsy/attempted repair were all in perfect condition. Their charge points were kept clean, Deebots are like cars that strand you due to shoddy software issues.

Out of curiosity, do you know how to keep the deebot from going into certain areas? Aside from a physical barrier I mean. Mine has the opposite issue that yours did (regarding the stairs). I have a small step down area in my home, and the deebot likes to dive down into it... ^^; It can't climb back out, so I was hoping to virtual barrier it off somehow.

It does have a nice little tool that comes with it, but I find the razor won't reach into the crevice where the hair accumulates the most. I use a pair of pointy tweezers to pull it out. Or a razor blade. Or both. It's the least I can do since this vac is saving my back. (Old people-speak. "Ohhh, my rheumatism." Whine, whine.)

My 901 won’t map the whole house...Is there a trick to make it finish the entire house? Once it has that, I have a feeling it would work better. I’ve had mine a week and it has yet to map or finish cleaning. I called tech-support number in the Philippines and they are pretty useless. They suggested some basic troubleshooting but I have a feeling the issue is my floor is over 2000 ft.². Am I able to compartmentalize and haven’t learned that way? The issue becomes the vacuum off and die completely before finding the charging dock while mapping. If I try to pick it up or put it close to the dock to assist it it loses the map! How annoying.

We bought one for Christmas so its almost 2 months old. At first it would run for 2 hours but now it runs about an hour before the red light turns on and it heads back to it's base.

This vacuum doesn't do room mapping so it just cleans as much as it can on a single charge. But you can schedule multiple cleanings using the app.

Wheels aren't too bad. It's the main brush that is the most maintenance with hair. But we have two dogs so that's understandable.

Good. Pretty similar to pet hair. You just have to clean the brush more depending on how much or long the hair.

I have a German Shedder... I'm hoping this machine helps! I'll clean the machine once a day if it saves me from having to vacuum once a day! I love my dog, but why oh why do they shed this way!? It's evil. :(

Mine Died after 1.4 years. Worked great until it just quit doing anything except turn the Auto light on and the initial beeps. The battery is fully charged (measured 16.4V) and all the hair/lint is removed from all rotating parts.

I would have tried resetting the battery... place robot on charger contacts and remove after three minutes; repeat this three times. That usually helps me when I think that my robot is done for. Otherwise, you can usually also buy a battery replacement from the manufacturer website. It's cheap and easy to replace.

@@lindylopez3606 I was unaware that following your procedure could cause a reset. I will try it if it fails again. Removing the battery and reinstalling it did nothing other than proving that the battery was fully charged. I then took the covers off the top of Deebot. I did not find anything viably wrong. I left it apart for a few days. I was about to trash it or remove the motors for a possible robot project for my 14 years old son; but I re-installed the battery and held down the Auto button for an extended time. It then surprised me and beeped and started the drive motors. It is now working normally

@@allencar5212 For future clarification, I did not indicate to remove the battery when resetting. The battery should still be installed in Deebot when doing the reset. But I am glad that you were able to make it work again! Yes, there is something odd about the Deebot with its batteries. Despite this, I have managed to keep mine going for two years now :) Best of luck to you!

4 months? You should change filters after 1 or 2 years. If you read the manual is well specified right next to "empty after every use". And about the brushes definitely you can use for at least 2 years. Sorry man but you are doing everything wrong.
