I’m in south Florida. A lot of my customers have huge second homes and it’s “Their “ small home. I don’t know where the money comes from but I couldn’t afford most of the second homes they have.
In the UK, and the whole of Europe, if we suspect a leak then we HAVE to recover remaining refrigerant and then do a pressure test to find the leak. Regulations say we can't just top up a system.
Steve, what are your feelings about using nu calgon easy seal to stop a pin hole leak. Only to use on old systems. Do they work or are they more harmful to the AC unit. Thanks!

@Daniel Williams Thanks for the information. I let the customer know about that option and the pros and cons. What is your opinion on part swapers. Ive been to several calls here in Texas and come to find out their replacement unit ..was used before. It was probably from a technician that does not know how to troubleshoot.
It was so much simpler back in the day! No tablet just a set of anolog gauges you used the conversation chart and outside temperature to charge the unit! Some guys just charged until you had sweat back on the suction line to the compressor and just used a hose and no gauges!
Jeffery Grady if you charge beer can cold, You’re too old. Lol When I apprenticed back in the early 90s, my boss charged everything beer can cold. He almost never connected to the high side. Just low side and charge till suction line was cold. Most of the units we saw were old leakers anyway, so the low superheat didn’t stay low for long!
@@Fireship1 That's how it used to be! You could tell how well a unit was working by just feeling the suction and discharge lines! Most of the people in the HVAC business were crooks too back then! still alot now! One of the oldest scams was to tell the customer tell your insurance company that your AC unit was struck by lightning and it fried the compressor and we will certify to that then we can replace the unit for free! Yes that was very common back in the day! Alot of these so called leakers have had the valve cores loosened so they leak and then you can just going back and charging them making easy big money and you can needle the customer telling him he needs a new unit and after a bunch of expensive recharges he will have you replace the unit and you will make more money! They tought this at HVAC school and said in the winter when it's slow the boss will keep you on instead of laying you off because you looked out for the boss and made money for him! I had my fill of this crap and went to work for the government and had a union job with great benefits and now a good pension after 30 years!
How many square feet are they cooling with four units? Probably 25-30k to replace with similar units. I'm amazed you need that much cooling in that part of the country.
Likely depends on the situation. Having 4 individual units is better if you're only likely to use one of those areas at a time (lower power bills as you can switch the rest off), or if the roofspace/crawl space is too small to fit a larger unit. Also adds redundancy, incase one fails you still have cooling. On the downside, having 4 individual units compared to one larger unit is likely to cost a fair chunk more to install/replace due to the sheer amount of extra labour involved. Smaller units is typically how household AC is done in Australia, "minisplits" are the most common, one per room, whereas you only see whole house ducted systems in larger/fancier/more expensive houses.

So why are they all leaking if it supposed to be a closed system ? Why don't you look for the leak and stop it like you did the shredder valve? I love your videos and Mollie, she is very happy.
@MJ Hoss - because you're throwing good money after bad on 17 year old units. Yes, you could get lucky and sniff the Schrader valve and there's a chance you might find one. The chance of all 4 leaking at the Schraders are nil, and the homeowner isn't going to want to pay to chase down the leak in the systems for units that already need to be replaced. I'm trying to figure out why there are four Trane XE1000 dedicated units for zones in that house? Must be a big arse house!
Its bad to put gas into a leaking system, no? R22 can't be cheap, and it might be more work to find out where the leak is, but the home owner isn't there so who cares right? It'll be cold for a few days then it will be hot inside again. Checking charge is one thing, but this is just a waste...
Before you post a comment like this, understand that he was paid to come out here, and without making a feeble attempt to locate or identify the leak, he just dumped gas into it and called it done. So yeah as a homeowner I'd be ticked to see some HVAC guru charge $400 or whatever absurd price any HVAC guru charges and leaves after telling me there's a leak and doesn't know if its the damn Schrader valves, evap, or condenser, etc. I had to spend a week without AC after Isias just went through here (no power). I have 2 kids below age of 5. We survived without AC. So yeah ... you and the horse you rode in on. Read the comment and move on.
So you sit behind your HVAC trade school knowledge and watch regular homeowners get fleeced for all the money they have and feel better because you're providing a service? I think you are the reason why most people don't trust HVAC, plumbers, mechanics, etc. You see an old system and rather than using your brain to figure out how to pull someone out of a difficult situation, you want to see how quickly you can get them a new expensive unit.. I don't want to learn what little trade school knowledge you picked up sleeping during class which makes you smarter than me in knowing HVAC if your life goal is to fleece your customers. Home owners do just as they please no matter what or who tells them. Money talks, the man was hired to do a job and he did his job and did it well, forget about what you think not your house not your money. Yes new system is the right answer but not now.
