They're marketed to the 'Before' photo in a Charles Atlas ad, to the average person whose last fight was in grade school, to the people who don't have the time or money to train, to the physically frail. Some of the designers might even think they're helping people. What they do is give a false sense of security. While that extra spring in the step might dissuade some attackers, others will take the chance. The hidden stabby in the brush is only useful if nobody took away the kidnap victim's purse and she keeps her composure enough to lull her attackers into thinking she's helpless. Then she could get the drop on one and either escape or take his gun.

I've been into a lot of fights in my day. I've had the most trouble with 2 kinds of opponents. The superbly obese and the small and squirly. Body type isn't necessarily an indicator of one's ability to fight. Mindset is most important. Skill is a close second, as skill is worthless without the mind to use it.

When I think of Asian action actors with the name of 'Li/Lee' I immediately think of Bruce Lee. Seems like all other Asian actors after Bruce are trying to fill that void he left behind. Some come close but none will ever be the same. Keep up the good work my friends.

Michigan allows 3" for self defense (never tell a cop a blade is for that), 4" for general use, and longer hunting blades are only for hunters. Most states are less lenient than Michigan regarding length. Brass knuckles do more damage than most knife non fatal injuries. I have these exact same Buddha Beads. Martial Arts has been part of my life for such a long time including weapons combat. Using this necklace is deceiving, however I am comfortable using this as a tool for self defense out of the endless options available. I do NOT wear it around my neck as I use it for mantras, and if I am ever out with it, I keep it wrapped around my hand and wrist. Accurately striking someone where I want to is not a concern for me, but keep in mind, martial arts is what I have dedicated myself to. An inexperienced individual may only put themselves in danger if used in false confidence. The points made in this video are valid and those using such tools for self defense should educate themselves or choose another weapon. Good health to all.

I appreciate them as well, they certainly dont replace training but having something is better than nothing *most of the time*. The spike brush is the least gimmicky, knives are obvious & metallic. That being said, if you have no idea what youre doing, neither these nor anything else will save you, to include firearms. Ive seen so many ppl who have the same idea with firearms as the ppl buying some of these, thinking theyre safe and dont need to train bc the item will save them. It will not, & you are supplying the perp with a gun & ammo. This mentality needs to end, like years ago. Its almost 2019, how can one live being that dumb?

The best self defence is common sense, Avoid walking in dimly lit areas like subways or ally ways if you can, if you cannot, put up your hood and walk in the shadows and if you see any louts or potentially dangerous people hanging about try to locate an alternate route if you cannot do that get ready with any self defence tool you keep on your person and do not draw attention to yourself and if a situation does kick off and if you have an opportunity to run do it otherwise show your ready to fight back in confidence, most criminal scum only target the weak if you show confidence and awareness while walking around you will appear not an easy target very few criminals go out looking for a fair fight and of course it helps if you maintain fitness and learn a fighting style that teaches you to fight but to avoid any fight at all costs is effective self defence, your fighting skills are to be used if there is no other option

@legilnnine

In any self defence situation always add the ever present ingredient "liar." Does anyone think the attacker will tell the truth to law enforcement? He'll say that he was the target of e.g.., racial taunts by you, and that you pulled a hair brush that was really a knife, and he'll produce witnesses. It happens all the time. The law doesn't know what happened. Victory goes to the best actor in court. Once you pull any weapon the perp can also claim self-defence. you give up all your legal rights and the perp can seem like the victim. You need to think about all of this and plan your self defence strategy accordingly.

Wow I was just writing in my notebook about this yesterday. Not the same equipment but the same concept. Knives, mace, stun guns, and even firearms are all useless unless you can get to it. Unless you are already carrying the weapon your chances of accessing it once attacked are slim and even dangerous if the attacker gets your weapon or gets it away from you during deployment. And being real you can't just walk down the street with a weapon in hand so you are never going to be ready to deploy it. An example I use to drive this home is the shoe tie test. First tie you shoe while kneeling. Then do it again while several people lightly or moderately attacking you. I bet you notice a difference and you have the advantage of knowing it is coming. Same things happens when you try to put keys in a car, dail a phone number and deploy a weapon. Only in real life it is 1000% worse.

I disagree with this. Several years ago I was walking down a backwoods road to visit a friend when I heard rustling and growling from behind me. I had maybe 2 seconds from being alerted to the danger to turn around and confront a stray dog that was rushing towards me. It was pure instinct, but I stabbed the thing in the side of it's neck when it lunged at me and then kicked it away. I still don't know how my knife (which was my BSA 100 year anniversary knife - if you want to look up the style) went from closed in my pocket to open in my hand in time to defend myself. I don't remember anything at all as to my actions prior to stabbing the dog, but it happened wayyy faster than I imagined. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish the thing had barked or something. I would have rather not used the knife, as most dogs can be deterred by a swift kick to the face, but I didn't know what was coming at me and used what I had on hand. Anyway, TL;DR - when your life is on the line, you can react much faster than you think.

It worked once, and I always carry it. And it's totally true you need at least basic training to use it right! . the point with hidden blades is that the assholes never expects you have one, and the sudden response to their attack provides you time enough to run away.

I'm in a country where it's illegal to carry anything for self defense, and most of these items would get you in trouble if you used them (GBH if you stabbed someone with a hairbrush-shiv). You're far better to have a dual-purpose alibi object like a heavy torch or a walking stick.

Aye, not every country is the USA. The ring and cap attachment probably wouldn't register, but a heavy chain could and a hairbrush shiv certainly would be considered "carrying an object suitable for harming people with in public". And if you had to use a hidden weapon in self-defense you'd give the attacker's defense attorney a field day against you. You're a delusional survivalist waiting for a chance to use your sneaky weapons at the slightest excuse, a danger to society who should be locked up!

Almost 25 years ago a really good friend bought me one of those "ninja keychains"(look it up on google if you don't know what I'm referring to), and I have carried it pretty much every day and everywhere since then. At that point I had already practiced extensively with a kubotan so this was the same on steroids. I only got to "use" it once. Some guy tried to start a fight when I was walking with my daughter, and I dropped into a fighting stance and he caught a glimpse of it and suddenly he wasn't interested. It's easy to camouflage in such a way that nobody thinks it's a weapon.....use it as a keychain and put lots of keys on it. Hold it loose in your hands with the 2 finger spikes through your fingers(they should naturally pull upward to hide behind your hand) and it'll look like you're just holding a keychain and people will fuzz out the 2 spikes sticking in between your fingers if they happen to see them. I have more problems entering night clubs with my chained wallet***** than with my keychain. ***** it's kept me from losing thousands of dollars over the years and the two I've had only cost me $50 total, don't judge

Used to carry a kobotan, and did train with it especially drawing it. Never had to pull it but did put my hand on it several times when it looked like a situation could get out of hand. Also showed the end of it to a mugger that was scoping me and planning to rob me, however demonstrating that I was aware of him and that I was armed and prepared, meant that he couldn't get the jump on me so went looking for another target. So completely agree that any self defense tool needs training. Also saw a few videos of crazy armed to the teeth yanks showing what they packed in their ECBs and one really stuck in my mind (think he was in a state with gun laws but did watch a few and some had packed guns safely in the bottom of their bags, lol). The guy had a bag within his bag filled with self defense tools, as well as a baton, many duplications on knives, pepper spray and torches, etc. but not one of them was on his direct person, so not one of them was effective for self defense. He tried to justify it that if things kicked off he could take the bag out of his bag and quickly stash his many duplicate tools about his person, but that's not how self defense works. If you can't pull a tool out and get it into action in under 1 second then it is just extra weight you are carrying and it doesn't stand a chance of saving your life.

I think Marc MacYoung, when talking to a woman about self defense, asked her if she could drive her fingers into someone's eye in order to save her life, and she was like, "No!" So he's like, "You'd best learn how to avoid being in a situation where that's your only option then." These are definitely a bunch of silly tools. The cap is more useful as simply something to throw in someone's face while following it with a knife. I read a story on knife fighters where a guy ran up a decent tally doing that, until someone did it to him.

Frankly, if a "drunken" skinny dude attacks a women, any reasonable defensive measure will either be enough to get the dude to back off or it wont do anything for good. Vast majority of attackers will have no knowledge off combat sports and just go at it. Pepper Spray is a very real defensive measure for a women to scream and run away then, as the extra time is all thats needed to get away.

Historical note on the Hat, back in the day like 1950s and earlier era certain types of criminals would sew razor blades into their hat as a sucker weapon to blitz attack thier victims. It would initially appear that they were being respectful by removing their hat while talking to you but in reality they were putting the weapon in their hand and we're going to swing it at your face as soon as you got close. This was prevalent enough that certain precincts would advise officers to step back and draw their pistol on a suspect Who removed his hat When approaching the officer. That should give you an idea of how you would theoretically use that hat, however if your strategy revolves around a sucker attack you are going to have a hard time arguing self-defense.

Well hell then people should just lie down and die since they don't have the skills of a trained fighter. Here is a problem people that train become very arrogant about why they know and can apply vs. those that don't. Becoming arrogant and defensive about what you know is not helpful for those that don't know how to fight or are not willing to spend the time to do so, yet still need to defend themselves. This notion you use your bare hands is really stupid and in places were fights are common(3rd world) are last resort. People for centuries have carried and used weapons for a reason.

I've always wondered why I feel safer bare-handed than with a weapon as I always thought that was kind of weird, but since that's what I've always been trained to do, I guess it's not so uncommon a thought after all. This is a great video and I'm glad this channel and others like it are around to help dispel these kinds of thoughts about self defense. Just as a side-note: I've never even seen any of those self defense tools/weapons before until I saw this video lol Where I live almost all items/weapons for self defense are illegal to carry save for a licensed firearm or a folding knife with no assisted opening methods. (That includes but not limited to: Flippers, auto-knives, even thumb studs count as assisted opening) Since I have no training in how to use a knife and I don't carry a firearm, I'm most comfortable protecting myself bare-handed. It's just nice to know that I'm not necessarily doing myself a disservice by not carrying anything. I'm lucky to have training as it has saved my life a couple of times, and I'm glad that organizations and information like this group are active and available to allow people to train and learn to protect themselves as realistically as possible. The two demonstrators in this video really seem to know their stuff! :D

The additional problem with knives is that they are not defense tools. If someone attacks you with a knife and you have a knife, that encounter will continue until someone is in the ER. I have no defense experience, but using my imagination, you can pull out a baseball bat on a home invader, even hit them a couple times and there is still a possibility that person runs away. You can’t scare someone into running away after getting two hits in with a knife.

If a weapon doesn't pass 'can I end a fight faster with this or with my empty hand training', then I don't even bother. Tactical flashlight was one of the common self defense tools that failed that test because while it likely cause more damage than my fist alone, it is not designed to knock someone out and it can't help me grapple as well as empty hand. With that said I think flashlight still has their purpose for awareness and just general practical tool uses, but you don't need a tactical version for either of those tasks.

I totally agree that someone with no skills, might hurt themselves, or piss someone off, using any of these items. On the other hand, someone with a martial arts background, can use many items as a weapon... Considering most who have Mala beads wear them wrapped around the wrist, it's easy to use them in blocks, or deployed, whip them doing significant damage. I grabbed one to check out, and the beads come in solid brass or stainless, it has some good weight, and a plastic coated steel aircraft cable connecting them. I agree that it could potentially be used against you, when worn around your neck, but as someone who wears different prayer beads, and having a martial arts background, I think it's a solid option in a pinch. If they are ever needed, they have the potential to do some serious damage. Traditional mala (prayer beads) are seads, wood, bone, or stones, and can be used, but these could take a serious beating as well as dish it out. As an extension to your reach, as well as in several defensive techniques. No its not a knife or gun, but you have to admit that, in the right hands, could be useful if needed, in a self defense situation. I don't think that there was anything else there that I'd bother with, but I don't wander around with a hair brush lol. Just my thoughts on it, but like I said, I totally agree with you.

Great video! Most people, who buy some self defence device forget one simple thing: any weapon you have is an advantage, but absolutely not magical wand, that will kill or disable your opponent at sight. If you want to use your weapon effectively, you must train not only to use, but also to simply draw your weapon. Samurai, one of the best warriors, perfected the art to drawing a sword and kill with one single movement in a blink of an eye for ages. Let's look at another example: police officers armed with firearms and batons sometimes have problems drawing their weapons in case of assault. That is why, if an officer suspects an upcoming attack, he puts his hand on a weapon preventively. What am I trying to say: there are no magical weapons, that can make you invincible. You can use anything as a weapon, including your own body, with proper training. Example: in jail prisoners use a piece of soap, wrapped in some cloth, like towel, as well made flail. You should train not only to use, but to draw you weapon. Think where you put it. If you put your knife in a handbag and get assaulted, the attacker will probably aim to take your handbag. That will leave you with no weapon. You should train not to focus on your weapon only, but to use the best tactics according to the situation. Training condition should be as close as possible to the real situation, so you can see advantages and disadvantages of your weapon. And, of course, physique training. Two-handed sword, minigun or double-handed mace are useless if you can't lift them up.

If you ask me the skillset makes the weapon not the weapon making the skillset. Just that basic hat doesn't need a spike to be able to earn an advantage in a self defense situation when it could be used as a non damaging projectile to take the line of sight away from your attacker, and as long as you know how to follow up or to escape the situation you are now at an advantage.

Im pretty sure that hidden hairbrush knife is illegal just about everywhere in the us and places its not illegal you can carry a gun or a 12 inch pocket sword as you said in the video this is just a gimmick for people who want to take the easy way out and not have to train thats why I carry a pocket knife with essentially an Emerson wave feature (its just a Zip tie in place of the thumb stud) so when I take it out of my pocket the blade is already half way open and fully open once it's out The knife is a cold steel voyager xl tanto with cts-bd1 steel closed the knife is 6 inches but open its 12 inches with multiple ways to grip the handle I hope I never have to use it for self defense but if I do the sight of a 12 inch knife and the sound of it locking open will probably scare away most attackers

They will keep an eye on the other hand because they expect you to hit with that and use the cap as decoy. And its available really quick so as long as youre not getting surprised you might be able to surprise your enemy. True. I cannot stress this enough: TRAIN! It doesn't matter if you train just your body, or if you train with weapons. You will need training in every case. I personally carry a knife(useful for other things as well, small enough to be hidden in pocket, and also like a gun works as a psychological weapon) or telescopic baton(probably the most useful, but it requires more space), because I cannot carry gun yet(no gun permit yet) and train fencing and self-defence(self-defence helps me first to train unarmed combat myself, to be slightly more fit and prepared for combat, and second, it helps me to understand what options someone with skills to fight might have to deflect those weapons, fencing then allows me to use those weapons properly and it also allows me to see what options of attacks and defence I have, for example: most of the defensive moves against armed opponent are designed against attacks on body, neck, head, etc. but they are not usually designed for defence of legs, and if you manage to hit someone in the knee with baton, or jam a knife in his thigh, then you won the fight, he lost stability, option to retreat and possibly option to even stand).
