@@Naskari_ Why? Qc8 protects both D7 and the white bishop, and the queen is safe. Blacks position is certainly not great, but I don't see an immediated threat. Still I agree Bb7 is the best move ro play.in whites position.

Another great lesson, thanks Igor! I unofficially teach chess to my students, mostly with your lessons. This lesson will help me a lot. The solution of the puzzle around 13:40, to my opinion is, Bb6. If the queen captures the bishop, that will lead to checkmate (Qxd7#). If it moves elsewhere, that will fail due to the same checkmate. The only logical move will be sacrificing the queen attaining a totally loosing position for black.

@michaelrobinson2687

Looked for attacking moves. I saw only 4 pieces that could really make attacking moves. Queenside Rook, Knight or either Bishop. Next I saw that every attacking square the Knight can move to is defended by Black so that's out. Black's Kingside looks quite solid. There is no way that the Rook can attack, this just leaves the Bishops. My instincts told me that B x b7, attacking the Rook looks obvious but then I calmed myself down and remembered that I've watched enough of your videos to know that to take is a mistake and that it's always better to increase the pressure. Then I saw the answer (which I probably wouldn't spot in a game as I'm one of the type who falters under pressure - I'd probably have actually played B x b7) That answer is B b6 ! (threatening Black's Queen). It took me a while to see why the Black Queen can't just nullify the threat by taking the now undefended Bishop but once I saw it, it makes perfect logical sense. The Queen can't stop protecting the Pawn on d7 because of the threat of Q x d7# (which the move B b6 opened up) and the Queen will be taken if it tries to defend the Pawn. However, I am so bad at identifying a winning position that it would probably take me so agonisingly long to take advantage of the material advantage gained by B b6 that my opponent would resign out of sheer boredom before I manage to land a checkmate. There was one game I played recently where I'd got into a good position, didn't realise just how good a position it was, and missed a Mate in 5 that someone like you would probably have seen instantly. I went on to win the game but it took me 19 moves (in addition to the 28 it took me to get into the position so 47 turns total), and many annoying instances where I could attack but couldn't finish it, to do so. In the end I had to promote 2 pawns and use overwhelming force to win.

I would play Bb6, attacking the queen. Black cannot capture the bishop, or Qxd7 is mate. However, black doesn't have any other good move to prevent the checkmate while also saving his queen. He could play Rd8, but then after Bxc7, the rook is also under attack. His best option is probably Bd6, which would give him time to castle, but it would mean sacrificing both the bishop and the queen. Game over.
