Very often, chess players lack a clear guideline. It's not that they don't know the chess rules and strategies, but rather that they know A LOT of them: centralizing the pieces, developing a queen-bishop battery, playing prophylactic moves, and a bunch of other principles. Therefore, the problem is that they don't know which one to follow in a given position.
In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will share with you the most important chess rule. Knowing this rule/principle will help you reach the 2000 ELO rating.

Great video Igor! I consider your strategy sort of a "heuristic pruning" strategy. While Stockfish will usually give the best objective move against perfect play (when analyzed to a certain depth), none of us ever play perfect opponents. We are playing against humans - humans who make mistakes. Your heuristic pruning strategy will often *not* give the best objective move, but will often give the best move against a human player. This generally works because when faced with a barrage of attacks, many humans panic and play a move that is very far from optimal. As you point out, it also dramatically simplifies the analysis you have to make in order to arrive at a very good move. Good one!

I mean, stockfish evaluation function where it evaluates leaves in the game tree after a certain depth is also a heuristic. So stockfish is not perfect. Heck, thats why it sometimes loses in TCEC against Leela, which is not perfect either. A perfect policy is monumentally hard to obtain. In fact, if we are able to do so, we can solve several other unsolvable world problems. (chess is an EXPTIME-complete game so it is even harder to solve to optimality than the already ridiculously difficult NP-hard and NP-complete problems). Lol I nerded out 😅

@@abuthahirumarhathab4201 No, Stockfish is not heuristic in the same way Igor's method is a heuristic. Sure, Stockfish uses a static evaluation function which if of course is by definition a heuristic, but the search itself is not heuristic. Igor's search method, on the other hand, ruthlessly prunes-off moves that are not attacking an opponents piece on their side of the board. Stockfish would never do this under any circumstances (unless there was an incredibly unusual variation that exceeded its search depth.) The most common reason that Stockfish would lose to Leela is that its static evaluation function (which drives its search) does not accurately evaluate the strengths of a position. Long ago when computer chess programs were in their infancy, this is why they were so bad - their evaluation functions were terrible. Stockfish's evaluation function is extremely good and generally, quite accurately evaluates a position statically. Combine with very fast alpha-beta-pruned search and you have a strong player.

@@jonlynch yeah. the search is not a heuristic. but the evaluation is. But stockfish evaluation is not completely optimal. some moves may be either optimal by chance or stockfish may find a forced mate, in which case, stockfish moves are 100% optimal. Igor's method is more of a human method that is kinda designed for our capabilities and limitations. Sure, a better method might exist. But if i know one, I wouldn't be a 800 elo anymore. But odds are mostly the case that stockfish moves are globally optimal (unless as u said, some weird variations exist beyond the search depth or if the position is closed - where neural networks for some reason outperform stockfish)

Engines haven't locked down perfect play. So "best objective move" is still an unknown thing. To human sensibilities, engine play (under its given manner of construct/approach) strikes us as so superior that it seems it may be in close proximity to achieving optimal (perfect) play. But our sensibilities can be (and are) often wrong. The big takeaway from A0 was that an entirely new approach to learning the game can lead to remarkably high (super-human) level of play. Is that it then? Either A0's adversarial self-reinforcement learning approach or engine's brute force approach are the only two paths forward to solving chess? I don't think I'd put money on that. Regardless, both of those approaches empathetically run roughshod over the patzer play of humans. Easily outclassing the best humanity has to offer. So human chess just needs to be understood to be its own thing...forever full of inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders. But that's okay. It's still fun. And worth finding out what human can do it best.

Your rule of approaching the game has definitely helped. Yes you have to adapt it to the situation every step of the game so it will make sense, but it gives a curtain direction. Thank you for sharing! Played a few games and all of a sudden i'm making moves that i didn't use to make.

Prior to watching this video I would’ve took the knight with Bxb4 (which wouldn’t be good because to take is a mistake) or Kb1 which is a passive defensive move. But after watching the video I would’ve played Bd4 to move forward and attack the defender of the knight on H5, in which black would have an unfavourable position after a few moves. Thanks for video Igor and I hope to see more helpful thinking systems soon that I can implement in my chess games!

Woah... I have learnt an amazing chess trick from this video! I found pawn to e5 first in the quiz, which ignores the threat of Nxa2 by the black pieces while threatening to win a knight. If the knight on h5 moves to f6 to defend the X-rayed pawn on h7, simply capture the black's knight with the pawn on e5 while threatening checkmate with Qxh7 by the white pieces. Else if pawn to g6 is played by the black pieces to defend the knight, I chose to attack it once more with pawn to g4 by the white pieces and wherever the black knight moves, Qf6 or Qxf6 is then played by the white pieces, checkmate is unstoppable or your opponent can choose to give up his black queen.

Previously I would play Bd4 and go for the Knight on h5. But that is not attacking move as immediate e5. It blocks Queens defense of knight and opens diagonal for bishop. Now, black could either take pawn with the knight and give a check, capture dark squered bishop, but then I have the other to attack on opened diagonal. Or can take immediately light squared bishop. Then after rook takes, I am treatening knight, have the other bishop for attack after e6 or something with that pawn, and also knight and rook that, captured light squared bishop, to go on g or h file and I am sure that this attack is unstopable.

Bd4. The threat nxa2 loses one of the knights on a2 or h5 after kb1, queen moves away due to double atk and you pick up one knight, so better continuation after bd4 nxd3+, rook recapture(pawn is pinned), queen must maintain defense of h5 knight so qb5 only safe square, after rb3 the queen must leave the defense of knight and you win the knight.

i am not fit today but i was looking for some ideas with bg7 but it just looked good. In the Tournament i would play bd4 attacking the queen but i knew that konzept allrdy before from you.

As a 2000, ironically the first thing that I thought about is Kb1 (cowardly) but then I realised that Bd4 would have been a better move, setting a sneaky trap for black if he becomes too greedy after Nxa2 Kb1 2 of black's pieces are attacked and there is no way to defend the 2 knights (a2 an h5) after the queen moves. So Bd4 Nxd3 (removing the light squared bishop for white) but after Rxd3, with the queen being attacked and forced to move, the h5 knight is lost same with Bd4 Qc6. Bd4 also Nxa2+ Nxc3 which may result in doubled pawns in some variations.

Previously, BxB4, trading bishop for knight to eliminate the obvious threat, but leaving the enemy pawn & queen to wreak havoc later. NOW: B-e4 to force the black Queen to c6, followed by QxN, gaining a piece & threatening mate with e5.

Before maybe Bxb4 or Bd4 and after your suggestion e5 which will block Q protection of the Knight on h5 and open the light B to h7. After surviving a check and a trade of dark B then Qxh5 looks promising as the Pawn watches f6. Black might still try some shenanigans with king-side Pawns, but we are not calculating - just attacking onto the opponents side. That is my thinking, but Black will likely just move Nxd3+, then both black Knights will be hanging under attack.

prior to the video i would have premoved Kb1. after the video i thought for 4 minutes, and decided on the move Bd4 because if the black knight takes a2+ after Kb1 black cannot defend both pieces, and so probably has to trade on d3 with Nxd3+ Rx, and after the queen runs f5 is incoming, cutting the queen off from the knight and winning material, if the knight retreats toe f6 black will get checkmated soon after Bx gx Nd4 (to allow the rook on d3 to access the g file) let me know if this is correct sensei, love your videos

Prior, I would have played KB1, but now I think BD4. I believe he would play NXB check, and RxN. Black would pretty much be forced with QB5, then you would play NG5, threatens the Knight. Followed by NG5. Black would play G6 to protect the Knight, followed by G4 to win the knight if it is moved, and if not, material, and a partial open file against the king.

Pre Igor Nation I would probably play the defensive move Kb1, presuming I actually saw the threat LOL. Would now consider candidate moves Kb1, Bd4, Bxg7, b4, and e5, of which Bd4 seems the most forcing and eventually wins the knight on a5.

Bishop d4 and we attack the queen and also that h5 knight the queen has to retreat to b6 because there are no other safe sqaure after queen move we take the h5 knight

I think Bd4 attacking queen. That protects against the Kxa2, then losing black bishop, a pawn, and screws the pawn structure. Before this video I would consider a3, or e5. e5 is coming regardless if the knight doesn't take white bishop

Bd4 seems the most obvious... I feel like Bxg7 is more in the spirit of the video. If Nxg7 then Ng5 seems like quite the threat and if Kxg7 - maybe f5 to interrupt Queen's protection of the Knight? It's very hard to calculate all the possibilities though - same for half the moves in the video. Initial attack seems crazy and so do half the moves - but king weakness compensates for all of the material sacrifices. I don't have any idea as to how to get good enough to see that ahead of time.

p-e5 seems to win material. the knight is now unprotected and has nowhere to go without losing an exchange. and if it moves to anywhere except f6 there's q-h7 mate as p-e5 uncovers the bishop on d3. ... p-g6 seems to be forced which protects the knight and also protects against q-h7 mate. p-g4 attacks the knight again - if ...bxg4 the queen recaptures winning the exchange but - if ...nxf4 then q-h6 threatening the knight on f4 followed by n-g5 (unless there's a series of spite checks with n-a2 or nxd3 or n-d2 first) threatening q-h7 mate again

Before watching I'd have probably done K b1, protecting the pawn as I'm naturally cautious and more concerned about not losing than actually winning. After watching I'm considering B d4, attacking the Black Queen or g4, attacking the Knight on h5 but then I'd probably be paralysed by indecision trying to figure out which option I should choose. I briefly considered Q e7, threatening the Black Rook on f8 but dismissed it as idiotic. Edit: After watching the video a 2nd time I realised that g4 was also idiotic but saw e5 as a possible attacking move.

Prior I would have played a3, but after this video, bishop d4 is crushing I think. I calculated a while and got stuck because there is defensive play for black but black is forced to play defense, and must eventually play g6 to hold the knight which weakens the dark squares, which the bishop and queen can exploit later in the game. Black must be losing

Before watching this video, I would have played King to B1 to defend the square that the knight is threatening. After watching this video I think I would play Bishop to D4 to attack the queen and make the queen leave that square and let me take the knight on H5.

What would be helpful is to tell how far ahead did you calculate and also anticipate all variations that your opponent could play. That is the most critical piece of information that is missing in this video.

The 1..Nxa2+ threat is more than compensated for by Black's lack of development, exposed and over-extended Q and weak N on h5 versus White's coordinated pieces aiming at the king. I would play 1.Bd4,Nxd3+ 2.Rxd3,Qb5 and now 3.Ng5,g6 4.Nxh7,Kxh7 (..Re8 5.Nf6+,Nxf6 6.Bxf6,Re6 7.Rd5,Qc6 8.f5,Rxe4 9.Qh6 and mate) 5.g4 and possibly Rh3 ++- 3.e5!,g6 4.g4,Ng7 (or ..Nxf4 5.Ng5,Ne2+ [..Ng2? 6.Qxh7#] 6.Kb1 +-) 5.Ng5,h5 6.Rg3!,Bxg4 7.h3,f6 8.ef with a raging attack.

prior i would likely play a3 or bd4, attempting to force the knight to move and/or creating some attack on the queen. Now i would consider bxg7. recapture with N creates threat on H file after e5 and its difficult for the black Q to get back and help defend.

Before, i would have played Kb1 to defend against the knight. Now, with the attacking mindset, i would strongly consider Bd4, threatening the Queen

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking Bd4. Forces the black Queen to come, unless black checks with the knight first.

Bd4 is wrong. Nxd3 check, pawn recaptured, queen b5. Protects knight on h5

@@aaronstephens2070 White can't recapture with the pawn if Nxd3, as White's c pawn is pinned. It would recapture with the rook, and then the queen is still threatened by the bishop on d4. Then Qb5 (as you suggest) would be followed by Rb2. Black's queen would still be driven from rank 4.

I lost because of your rule, always attack or create threat, opponent rook attacked my queen, I pinned the rook to opponent's queen using my queen, my queen was undefended, and he checked my king with rook and took my queen. So always attacking creates blunder, the best move was to move the queen to a defensive position. You need to know all the tactics and visualize their best move before attacking and sometimes defense is the best offense. I was up +2, but with that blunder I lost.

Always attacking or creating a threat is, to quote a Caribbean Pirate, more of a guideline than a rule. On the other hand, one of the hard and fast rules is "don't blunder".
