Another tip is to hook set straight up instead off to the side
@huknlipzfishing

Not really, I've fished jigs every time I go out since I was 13 the key is wait for him to take it and simply set the hook as hard as you can with a little slack so he doesn't feel the jig move around but it needs to be fast, I watched his Hooksett and it was gentle
@AsianAmerican113
@AsianAmerican113 Год назад
@@huknlipzfishing I mean honestly don’t need to wait that long. Yeah eventually a fish will let go but thinks taste goes into that. Bass ain’t like a bluegill they gonna eat it and take it while don’t need to much waiting around. Maybe bed fishing u really want them to take it but jigs soon as I feel em let it rip.
@ghostinthemachine5821
@ghostinthemachine5821 Год назад
That is what messes most novice jig fisherman up. Make sure the line is tight and set the hell out of the hook in a vertical fashion. I don't trim or use light jigs. I want to feel the weight of it on the bottom. And the hairier it is the better for bites. Oh and be patient on the bite. Let the fish take it not just bite at it.

Don’t cut the weedguard. Takes more force to bend a shorter weed guard. The better option is to flare it out and possibly bend it toward the hook point if you have room.

@ericg4626

The weed guard is long on purpose to miss more weeds and trash when fishing. But if you're fishing something you are familiar with/know is pretty clean it is nice to clip the weed guards and get a cleaner hookset and presentation.@@therealslimsht4522

@@therealslimsht4522 the weed guard just needs to be trimmed up a little bit, I push it down to where the hook is and I trim it just a little bit above it...also I will try and spread them out every few casts...like I pull them so they sit flatter, that way it still works as a weed guard but if you have to set the hook it takes a little less to get the hook to come through the weed guard

Personally, jigs are one of my favorite things to throw and I do recommend trimming that weed guard back but if you’re in a pond or just fishing, I would recommend lighter jigs but if you’re on a boat and fishing 15-20 feet of water I would recommend maybe a half ounce you know something a little heavier to really get down there
@The_Bass_Stunters
@The_Bass_Stunters Год назад
Definitely trim skirt, weed guards and use smaller trailers is all you need to do. Also make sure that hook is super sharp. If you’ve had your jigs bouncing around in your jig box with all your other jigs good chances the barb is bent or dulled your hook.

@bssaassin1900
@bssaassin1900 Год назад
It's funny when people fish a pond or shallow water and cast big heavy jigs that sound like throwing a rock into the water and wonder why they dont catch anything. Personally I feel like in most given situations most of the bass are just a little too small or spooky to eat big ass jigs and finesse or stealth with still enough action and noise to draw their attention is the way to go. I'm not an expert bass fisherman but I do have good success with fly gear,smaller lures or simply live bait. Senko worms are legit. Poppers are my favorite at night or early morning,honestly not really a jig guy but maybe I'll put the flyrod away and give it a shot someday

Those tips are ok depending on circumstances but not all at once. Jigs are my favorite technique but I primarily use 1/2 and 3/4 oz, also 3/8 if I'm going for smallmouth. Sometimes I may trim the skirt but that's it. I use fast action rod and I tighten the drag down and use a hard hook set

Some of this comes down to rod for me a finesse football jig should be on a 7’6 MH Fast I have on on a Loomis GCX you need something stout then for flippin’ jigs and bigger footballs 7’5 H Fast all day long I prefer a MegaBass Orochi Brailist but that is not a budget friendly option😂 the biggest about both is sensitivity and backbone if your not fishing for $$ you can take that cut in sensitivity but backbone is still crucial Halo makes some good 70$ rods with good backbone called the Rave Series, hope this helps anyone who needs it.

I feel like I get more bites on the jig using the chunk style trailers that have a tiny square body and longer arms. Trimming the weed guard is a must tho, fan it out at the very least if you can’t trim it.

Different jigs have different purposes, especially the various kinds of bass jigs. For example, swim jigs, football jigs, casting jigs, round ball jigs, finesse jigs, etc. Each has a specific purpose, time and place when to fish it. Each has a specific way to fish it. Typically, the bigger the jig, the bigger the bite, which thus means usually you’ll get less throughout the day. Personally, I prefer quality catches over quantity. But with that being said, I’ve caught big ones on ned rigs too. Lol

Here in AZ in the summer you need 3/4 or heavier jig flipping to get reaction bites. This was true when I was fishing a light jig and my buddy a 1 ounce. Once he caught 5 bass to my 0 I switched to a 3/4 and hammered it all day long. I also fish jigs with 25lb floro or 50lb braid so setting the hook is easy.

I tossed the jig earlier last year a football one big ol hook, trimmed weed gaurd and fanned out. I was on a steep bank and behind me was a trail with lots of people walking. I felt a thud, reeled it in a bit and set that hook vertically so freaking hard i fell on my ass. While i was on the ground i keep reeling in that fish and there was a lady walking behind me laughing her ass off which was pretty funny tbh, Then i pulled out that fish and it was a nice 3.5lb largemouth. My buddy was right next to me sitting there in awe and couldn't believe it. I have the youtube short of it. I haven't tossed the jig since then but it's def one of those techniques where you have to set the hook vertically and as hard as you can as you need to penetrate that hook in the fish's lip. I also don't do much when i toss that thing i just let it sit, drag a bit and reel to recast to a different area. If you are a bank fisherman which 99% of us are then a jig with heavy braid is what you should be throwing over reeds and cat tails. You can always rip it back at you retrieving your lure 100% of the time.

Sharpen your hook on every new jig. Only sharpen the outside of the tip of the hook. Once it cuts in, you don't want it to continue to cut. Also learn to cast with a tight line. Fish will hit the jig after it hits the water and is sinking almost every time. A slack line and you will never know it happened. A tight line, you will feel the hit and be able to set the hook.

Let the fish tell you. 90% of the time I fish with 1/2oz or 5/8oz and I catch fish. Look at the line you are using and the conditions you are fishing - depth, windy, calm, vegetation and let that determine what jig you fish. If it’s super windy you will have a lot of lift in your line and you will need a heavier jig so you can get the bait down in whatever cover. Also, fish like the sound of a jig clicking on the bottoms or bumping into cover. You get better sound with a heavier jig. Now the light jigs. Better in high pressure, slower fall rate so it is in the strike zone longer, like a senko, can be fished easily on lighter line and spin gear.
