i am an old 4.0 player. the 2 tips that helped me was tossing back by left eye (12 o'clock. Ryan would say more fwd.) and brining the racket over my head two times. these changes gave me effortless topspin. My old toss was more to the right and flatter. I now can have some variety to my service bounces. Too many 4.0 players serves bounce at the exact same height because they can't vary their you can teach an old dog new tricks!i

@ByongSun

Hey thanks for the video! When you say hit up on the ball ie: 6 - 12 on the clock do you make contact literally at 6? I have found some success in that, but when experimenting it seems like I get a pretty nasty kick focusing on making contact directly at 12 or 1. I'm wondering if the 6-12 motion is just to get you to swing up and make contact at 12 or are you truly brushing up on the ball from 6-12? If not what would you call the serve I describe making contact at 12?
@ByongSun
@ByongSun Год назад
Little more detail - the brushing up does work well I just feel like it comes off a bit loopier and doesn't have much action after it bounces. Making contact at 12 or 1 seems to give me more of a quick dip with alot of action.
@twinwankel
@twinwankel 2 года назад
I have tried your swing path and I dont end up getting much pace on the ball. I end up using Fed's swing path and the ball has a lot more pace. The difference is your upswing is just same as your drop but in opposite direction. That means that you racket is always brushing the back of the ball. Fed actually has his racket edge at 45 degrees instead of directly behind the ball like yours or almost 90 degrees like a first serve. That angle difference puts more forward pace on the ball while providing the kick. I think most pros copy what Fed does and I think Zverev is closer to 90 degrees than 45 and makes too many double faults. Thanks for the video.
@thereisnogod3924
@thereisnogod3924 2 года назад
that happens if you hit with a too strong grip !! if you use a loose grip the moment the elbow goes forward the racket will kick back and in the upswing it will kick back forward and thats were you find the pace in your kick serve.
@sanjaygandhi7962

On the second serve: (1) use an eastern one handed backhand grip for more spin; (2) toss just slightly left of where you toss for the first serve (12 oclock instead of 1 oclock for 1st serves); (3) keep your tossing handing up; (4) look up at ball when swinging - don't look at the service box; (5) the swing path will be along the back of the ball and 2 or 3 oclock; (6) swing as fast as you swing on first serves - the spin will bring the ball down into the court. Don't aim too close to the lines. Most 2nd serves should be to the returner's backhand side either with topspin or sidespin. Second serve should never be flat (or low topspin) and to the returner's forehand side. Some serves could be deep into the middle of the box to jam the returner but be prepared if the returner gets out of way and hits a hard forehand.
@Better_Call_Raul
@Better_Call_Raul 2 года назад
"On the second serve: (1) use an eastern one handed backhand" That is a good idea. Try Eastern BH and see how it feels.. Not sure Coach Ryan is only shifting the heel pad. Maybe players feel too uncomfortable with Backhand grip.
@thereisnogod3924
@thereisnogod3924 2 года назад
any beginner or intermediate player who will take BHeastern grip will hit the frame or the ball will bounce in his own service box !!!
@sanjaygandhi7962
@sanjaygandhi7962 2 года назад
@@thereisnogod3924 perhaps move your grip to somewhere between continental and the eastern backhand grip. This will allow you to impart more sidespin on the second serve. A continental grip might be fine if you are getting a high percentage of 2nd serves in and are looking for more power like from a topspin serve.

Hi Ryan, is top spin serve a better alternative compared to slice serve? For some reason whenever I use top spin serve, my opponents seemed to be punishing my serve. Not sure if my top spin serve was lacking of pace or spin. Whereas if I use slice serve, seems harder for my opponents to return. Thanks.
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis 2 года назад
If you can only hit one type of serve it would be best to use sidespin serve. Topspin is good to change things up. But sidespin serves are usually superior for players as they can hit them better than topspin.
@sanjaygandhi7962
@sanjaygandhi7962 2 года назад
Topspin serves that go to the forehand side of the returner are easy for a good returner to crush. Slice serves to the forehand side tend to stay lower and are harder to crush. Sometimes, I will hit a heavy slice serve (or sidespin serve) to the forehand side that hits the middle of the sideline. It curves so much away from the returner that it is nearly impossible to return. It's much easier to keep the returner off balance with sidespin serves than topspin serves. You can get a higher percentage into the court and use less energy than topspin serves. By varying the locations and the amount of sidespin, you can keep the returner guessing.
@boontatt5813
@boontatt5813 2 года назад
@@sanjaygandhi7962 great input. So, in what situation the top spin serve is more favorable than the side spin serve? I'd love to mix it up to have more variety in my game.
@sanjaygandhi7962
@sanjaygandhi7962 2 года назад
@@boontatt5813 I would say to use the topspin serve on second serves as a change up or if the returner seems to be able to return your sidespin serves easily. If the returner is standing too close inside the baseline and returning your sidespin serves really well then use a fast, powerful topspin serve into the backhand side or the body to see if you can force an error and make them stand farther back.

New to Tennis... so... is the Topspin Serve the best or preferred serve for tennis?
@2MinuteTennis

Hey thanks for the question. There are 3 basic serves… flat, slice, and topspin. All are great in their own way. I’d say if you’re new to tennis, learn the slice (sidespin) serve first.

Great video sir. But your kick lacks height both upon passing by/clearing the net and during bounce. I believe that's why it's called a "kick", the ball should "kick" up post-bounce towards the receiver's shoulders.
@the1tfactor
@the1tfactor 2 года назад
A kick serve is a topspin serve that jumps left or right after the bounce. Topspin shares most of the characteristics, but the flight can be in line with the bounce. Also doesn’t necessarily jump up as much.
