Most people believe that Sand Dollars are mostly found in beachy gift shops. However, with a little effort and a visit to the right beach under the right conditions, Sand Dollars are relatively easy to find.
In 2016 I visited Pensacola Beach and found my first Sand Dollar and was immediately mesmerized by them. Since then we have moved and now reside in Florida where I have been able to search for Sand Dollars on a regular basis. As a result of walking miles upon miles I have noticed several things that will result in you being able to find your very own Sand Dollars.
4 TIPS For Finding SAND DOLLARS With The Sand Dollar Scholar
1: Location, location, location
While I have shelled the east coast of Florida, I have never found a Sand Dollar. Since there are areas where I have had great success, I suggest focusing on these areas in your search for the elusive Sand Dollar.
- Marco Island
- St. George Island
- Shell Island (Panama City Beach)
- The Emerald Coast (Pensacola Beach to Panama City Beach)
2. Research
Learning about shells and beach structure is not only enjoyable, but also helpful in your search for shells and there are a couple book suggestions down below. Additionally, shelling during a wind event during which there are high waves is inadvisable so check the weather (weatherchannel.com). Another thing to research is the surf forecast as generally speaking, I have my best success when the surf is below 2 feet (surf_forecast.com). And then once things start coming together, take notes so you have something to reference in the future.
3. What To Look For
While Sand Dollars are generally round, they come in a couple variations and several sizes. Just like with something that takes repetition, building muscle memory by studying the shapes, colors and sizes of Sand Dollars will greatly increase your success. Some of the things to look for include:
- Keyholes
- Shapes
- Colors
- Edges
- Stars
- Oblong Holes
4. Apply What You Know
Once you have studied Sand Dollars, researched areas to go and checked the weather, get out as often as possible to hone your skills. Walk slowly and look for parts, shapes, and holes and you will be on the road to Sand Dollar success.
