Great TT. Tbh I laugh when people hate on the older TTs but love the R8 when you can clearly see the TT was the original inspiration for the original R8 concept, just stretched with the same engine the Gallardo used.. Basically. That's I see when I look at a TT.
Don't know where your info is from but the original TT was a big success hence why the newer versions just emulate its shape. Also, 225hp from a 1.8 in such a small car was a lot for its time.
The car was originally a narrow band TT 225 though. You can tell from the intake manifold and top intercooler piping. source: I have a tt225 swapped mk4 jetta
last summer, there was this first gen TT I kept seeing on the highway. I had a mk7 gti and this dude was keeping up if not out performing me constantly. so one day I decided to hop off his exit to try and talk to him. it was tuned with a k04 and his coils were dampened to well he could take S-bends at 70-80. love these audis not gunna lie
they are magnificent. The BAM version of the engine, which is the 225hp one, came from the factory with a K04-064 Turbo, Forged Crankshaft and forged Mahle pistons, Conrods were still cast but they were about twice as thick as the rods in the 180hp one. I see people running Stage 3‘s on stock internals which is insane to think about.
I think it is a little strange that David complaint about the interior. Obviously if you compare it to a newer Audi, he is right. But when you compare it to other early 2000 cars, the materials are super nice, everything feels and look pretty good, and the stock shifter actually feels great, not sure what the deal was with that aftermarket shifter and the broken window.
ThatDudeinBlue Audi TT means Tradition&Technik because it was build from the Golf Platform. NSU TT means Tourist Trophy. But it also act as a reminiscence to their early days although it has different meanings
ThatDudeinBlue I was more excited about the engine than the rest of the car... its sooo small and just different, well said sir! stock Audi was trying to go for a sporty type car but they lacked it in this type of car.
Aaron Robinson probably because you need money to mod cars like these they aren't as cheap like my BMW 540i v8 just for a intake cost around 400-600 dollars if I want a tune in looking at 1000
Alexander Aldana determines on which one of the Audi and engine you got. when I had my wagon with the twin turbo v6, the cost of tuning it was like $400.
I’m late to the party just found this video and comment but your channel was the reason I just bought my TT I had so much potential I’ve already started ordering parts.
I just got myself a TT too because of your channel. I used to have one back in 2005 and sold it on 2010 and always regret it. :) Thanks Sarah for the inspiration.
AverageMexicano I've always thought that, I thought about emailing him and seeing if he'd drive mine. I would definitely like to see one on his channel
Artem Akatev Eh, mine quite isn't there yet ha, I'm just going stage 3. I think it'd be cool to see his review/comparison between stock, stage 3 k04, stage 3 k24, stk, and a 3l stroker. To see a video of all of those is a dream
Kyle Henderson had a '12 s4 for four years never had a single issue until the end of the fourth year when a freak ECU incident happened which fried my motherboard luckily audi paid for it though so im still a fan.
One thing you got wrong is the shape! The best design is the 1st generation model! MOST PEOPLE DID LIKE IT! That's why the 2nd and even the 3rd generation have copied it. It never really changed much from the original concept design that's rare these days as most things get changed. The original design focused on the Bauhaus design and movement which started in Germany in 1913 through 1933. Most modernist designs in art and architecture had some influence from the Bauhaus movement. If you look inside a mark 1 Audi TT you will find the instrumentation, steering wheel gear shifter, handles all have the same design elements on them, this is even carried on the outside to the fuel cap. Also the TT stands for..."Tourist trophy" which comes from the Isle of Man TT race. I own a 2006 Audi TT 1.8 Turbo Quattro and its the best handling car ive ever had.
studio7 he didn’t do any research on this car. Just saying stuff that other ppl said. This car was a mega game changer! And it’s not a feminine looking car. Just saying the hair dresser comment. Ruined the review
I had a very similar steering wheel back in the day in a B5 S4 and I really liked it. For an almost 20 year old car, I think the interiors are pretty nice in those old Audis.
It has a haldex awd system which normally gives up to 50% of the power to the rear wheels when the front wheels start spinning. But because this way it is basically a fwd and it takes time to find grip, they install a second haldex chip that allows the torque to be sent according to how open the throttle body is. So after a favourable level of gas pedal applied the car can be absolutely awd!
first gen audi tt Quattro used a haldex 4wd system shared only at the time with the audi a3. he has put a no longer available new, haldex controller unit on the haldex clutch that's located on the back diff, the haldex in these cars trust me is more reactionary than preventative. the first gen audi tt Quattro was yes, 4wd but was only front wheel drive until it sences one of the wheels slipping then it engages the haldex clutch on the back diff and delivers 50/50. otherwise it is fwd. the programmer lets you send power to where ever you want and they are really hard to come by now. love my mk1 TT 225. factory 14psi at 225hp is enough for me for now ;)
You can still get the haldex programmer there is a yellow a blue and another that to me is the best on and is touch screen as well. $700.00-$850.00 brand new.
Fun fact David: The Audi TT uses a AWD system called Haldex that has a clutch in the rear diff that only engages when the front wheels start slipping, so 90% of the time its FWD.
This is true in stock applications but the rear clutch and diff can be modified to accept different power distribution ratios. Getting a 50/50 split is not at all impossible. You are correct, but David is not incorrect, either. 👍🏻
Finally a TT review! I was going to email you about mine, but figured it be 100% boring because it's stock. Anyway, after all my mods are finished up and I get the tune I'll be sure to give you a shout so you can review it!
@@walkerlee9635 I also have a TT, mine is a 180 hp. I have planned to reach 350 hp, and believe me, it is very possible. Here in Europe it is quite common to see mk1 TTs with 350/400 hp.
I really like the headlights; I'm not usually one for aftermarket lights, but these are nice. Great to see a modified TT. These earlier ones don't seem to get too much love.
Guillermo Flores yes they are I have a mk6 Jetta 2.slow I went for reliability over power it still torquey maybe because it's manual, the autos are really bad from when I test drive it before buying the manual
I think the first gen TT was a pretty decent success if you ask me. I love the 1.8T 20V motors. They cam make some serious power and the sound they make because of the 20 valves are exquisite. As far as I'm concerned they are a great platform. The power potential in a relatively light chassis.
You can reset your windows using a sequence with the window buttons. Check RU-vid for Audi TT window reset or something similar. Takes like 1 minute to fix.
"little fourcylinder" the 1.8t engine gained a lot of respect in europe. Its very strong and durable, meaning you can do 600hp daily if you do it good. Originally the engine was to be had from 150 up to 224hp like in the audi s3 8l.
@@Dom-wg1pk the 225 tt Quattro came with ko4 not ko3 the 180hp models only came with the ko3 then there was the v6 model with no turbo and only auto trans.
My Mk1 TT does the exact same thing with the passenger window. Even stock, it's quite fun to get around town with. Slower car driven fast kinda vibes, very engaging experience.
Awesome that you just reviewed an Audi, I've recently started working on my B8 A5. Had csl5's mounted during the weekend, have springs coming in at the end of the month and i'm getting tuned this week. I have big plans for my A5 😁
As a owner and fan of Alfa Romeo’s I can say while it’s outer design is strange ( so was said about my GTV ) but the interior of this TT is just pure perfection. Thing is amazing. Would even buy one in the future.
My dad had one for a while and we fell asleep at a parking lot after driving all night and it was HELL. My dad is 6’ 3” and him plus myself sleeping in a tiny coupe with barely any leg room.....ya
The 2 tone and enhanced spoiler are from sport edition. When normal it’s 95:5 (5 are almost sleep in Haldex diff.), and 50:50 when sleep. You can modify this with a few kits. I can’t understand why some guys put Porsche emblem to Audi car with no relation to Porsche.
I actually liked the 1st gen TT styling...probably partial to it because of my buddy's 2000 TT, blue on blue, 5M, 1.8L fwd model. Thing used to rip on the highway. Im sure knowing his family they would have gotten him the 6M AWD model if it were available then. High school memories!
Always liked it. But I am more of a fan of the VR6 version. I ran into one of those and gave the owner props on having the 6-er. He said he bought it because it wasn't the run of the mill version. And nothing better than the sound of a VR6 out of the tailpipes on a TT. Couldn't agree more.
There are some in the US, other reviewers there reviewed them allready. But he should do a roadtrip through europe and test unique cars from the countries he visits. for example the trabant or the melkus RS 1000 when in eastern germany.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting to fall in love with this car, but it really does seem like a gem. Hard top coupe, 50/50 AWD, decent looks, high HP build. Only real drawback was that blow-by issue. Anyone know if that's a common thing with these motors, or is that possibly due to poor gapping of the rings when it was built?
They made two version of the tt, one had the common 1.8t with 185hp and the other one came with a 1.8t with forged internals and a bigger turbo. Stock it made 225whp, I had one back in 2010 because I was young and couldn't afford an sti or evo, even in stock form they are pretty quick.
Drue what's good to know too is that the engine with 225 HP the so called BAM version, has even a stronger block because of a few extra struttings in it. So the already tuning friendly 1.8t really comes to its best reliability with the BAM..
Other than different pistons, valve springs and the struttings I described the BAM was the same motor as the other 1.8ts but with a smaller k03 turbo rather than the k04.. so if you got the 180 HP version you can upgrade on bolt on k04 kits and have the same power.. all mentioned upgrades audi has done to the BAM are good for reliability but don't really need to be addressed if you want to upgrade your 180hp 1.8t, it will be good for at least 280 HP without much more than the k04
The K04-23 turbo was capable of doing 300 BHP+. The K04 turbo is used in many fast production cars like Golf R , S3, the RS 3 and 4. I think it's also in the T T RS also has one, it's a common choice turbo not just VAG cars
On 3 Video someone brought me a modified one off uk market place for me to look at & it’s still on there..never seen such a complete mess of a TT 😩 hope yours turns out okay mate👍🏼 are you in the United Kingdom??
It is! It's got enough fancy electronics to keep you from accidentally killing yourself, but it won't stop you from having fun if you're really trying. You can easily get the car (kinda) sideways in a snowy intersection when you put your foot down in 2nd gear.
bro i love how you set up your vids and chop in the clips of car in between. Great job, just had to say it finally. Channels like whats his name smoking tire? shows the car for like 2 seconds in the begining and then sits in it with camera facing him and whatnot, i mean really? and talking to the owner... wtf? i get no real view of the car or look or good angles or anything, this set up i appreciate waaay more.
You should try and find a big turbo mk4 gti man! Same 1.8t motor but they're fwd so you'll get a different experience. I've owned my 20th anniversary gti for just over 2 years now and I'm in love with it! Got the main bolt ons and a tune and its very peppy. I'm going to be putting a big turbo in it soon and I can't wait. I wish I could have it done and have you drive it for the channel but it's gonna be a while.
The mk1 was the original and the best shape . With a fantastic interior thats very well built. A tremendous hit when it first came out over 20 years ago . You had to join a waiting list to get one . These days you can pick up a one cheaply . They cost over £30k in 1998 . If your careful you can find a low miler that shouldnt give you any problems and a lot of fun for very little. Bodywork is mostly aluminium so dosnt rot before your eyes like some cars. Engines are strong , and can be remapped .they will do large milages as long as you change the oil and cambelt regulary a great first car ..they say a future classic . I dont know if they will ever be worth a lot . But if you want something that wont cost you a lot you cant go wrong.
What size turbo and did you need to change the MAF sensor and fuel pump? What abt injectors and new mapping? Tks for the video. I have a 2001. Still goes strong although we cooked the alternator last Saturday on a open track day.
The 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 on the Tach is just the way they did it back in the day. They just shortened it to 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 because it's easier to to just think 6,xxx revolutions per minute. Lots of old muscle cars had double digits david! Even the mustang. Surprised you didn't know that
Thank You for the vid. your a good commentator and your wright your friend was very generous for letting you drive the car you sold me on the idea of a bigger turbo and I think you said coil pac I have the same car (just purchased) except mine is a convertible. I would like to mention it would'ev been nice to have some cut aways in the vid. of the speedo and tach when you got on it. THANXS again L.A.
The Automobile Club of Great Britain organized auto races for touring cars back at the beginning of the 20th century. These were held every year on different tracks including the Isle of Man. The trophy was presented to the winner by the Royal Automobile Club. The race was included in the FIA's manufacturers series for sports and GT cars. So. the Audi wasn't named for a motorcycle race but for the yearly Tourist Trophy automobile race held in the British Isles.
actually in germany there are a lot of cars with the 1.8T engine that are heavily modified (up to 1000HP) because those engines make a tone of power, a friend of mine has an a4 b5 with that engine which makes around 500-550HP which is just crazy with only front wheel drive (on his model)
Back when my dad was a manager of an audi and porsche dealership he said that more men bought tt's and more women bought r8's. He had one customer who had a 918 and that costumer swore that the ttrs was faster on certain tracks and the 918 would have a hard time pulling away out of corners. That being said the ttrs was built to 550 whp, but still...
Hi. I have a silver one with a little work done to it but a fantastic bodykit. Looks awesome. External boost controller catch can custom manifold but are also looking to a bigger turbo and front mount intercooler.
if anyone is looking for a 1st gen TT there are three versions. the regular TT 180 with the 1.8t equipped with a K03s turbo(180hp). The TT 225 with a K04 turbo(225hp). and the 3.2 vr6(basically a mk4 r32, 247hp). be mindful of that when purchasing one. good luck🤟🏼
The TT is so easy to get to 400 horse. Maintenance (timing kit, haldex, vacuum system, coils, colder sparks) Rs4 injectors, hybrid turbo, downpipe, intercooler, rs4 maf, preturbo intake and filter. Tune it and poof 350-400 wheel. Although because of internals recommend staying around 350 wheel. Lowering springs on bilstein hd shocks, and the haldex powertrack insert. 235 or wider performance tires on light rims. BOOOM you get a car that eats corners rips on a strait and wants more.
The squashed bug look is very aerodynamic. A pilot would understand. Does it need a gluteal cleft or is it sexy enough? The 4wd traction control and all galvanized body make it like a snowmobile in the winter. Great in wet weather too. Wait u were discussing dry roads, very quiet at speed.
