Hi John. Thank you for an excellent review. Finally, a review where someone compares a (relatively cheap) product with industry standards (Fluke). This definitely looks like a quite accurate measuring tool and a definite asset to any toolbox (and even a home hobby lab) Thanks again!

I have the MT8205 and it's very accurate but when the power is low (the batterys) the readings do be off!! Noticeably off. So it's something to watch out for. I thought it was the improved version of the MT8206 but was wrong. And the MT8206 was cheaper at the time I bought 8205!! But there you go amateur mistake. Just got into electronics last year and wish I'd started when I was younger,, but I love it. And I love these videos and people like you who share their knowledge with us who want to learn. Keep up the good work and loved the review👍👍👍

Thanks John. I quite like mine, just could do with being faster - if it wasn't so sluggish it'd be a great multimeter for the bench as the user interface is really nice.

as usually happens with 'jack of all trades...' I think as it is now is more like an interesting gadget than a serious multimeter to rely on. Some of the issues I noticed - as already reported below, in oscilloscope it is not possible to enter the cursor measurement mode. The option CURS (F4) described in the manual does not appear after holding the waveform or by using single triggering. Therefore the cursor functionality cannot be used at all - when measuring volts AC, it shows 5.2mV AC even with probes shorted . This makes it useless for measuring low AC voltages. Disappointing since even the cheapest multimeters show zero with probes shorted - In measuring AC it is reasonably close to my Brymen BM869s, however a value of 200VAC in multimeter shows as 182VAC trms in oscilloscope! In fact AC readings never agree between multimeter and scope although they are both supposed to be true rms (multimeter is pretty accurate) - out of curiosity I tried the transistor tester with several small signal transistors and guess what, I could not get any reading I am not sure if the above are common to all units but if so it would be great if they could rectify in a future release because otherwise it's a handy instrument

Hi John Thank you for the nice presentation. It is a very nice instrument. One basic feature is missing - I am looking for such meter since decades when I lost my old Fluke 8060 and it is a dB range. For basic audio testing would be ideal such a small meter with a dB scale. Perhaps the next upgrade will include this feature.

Looks like a nice little multimeter john :-D It seems accurate enough for normal use, shame they scrubbed the chip number out but it's likely just one of the new dmm chips, the 8 pin is calibration data so it can be even better :-D. £80 is the same price i payed for my old micronta digital meter back in the 1980's from tandys, amazing how much you get for your money now :-D i'm never sure about multimeters with a built in scope, they often don't have the resolution. As far as having space is concerned sell the cat!, your test gear is far more usefull :-D.

I'm sure I posted a reply to you Harv. Or perhaps I just forgot to hit the POST button :) Yes this one is a good little meter.. it's far better than the one I tested previously. At least on this one the scope is usable. I mean there's no point putting a scope on them if it doesn't work. Perhaps the message is getting through and we'll see awesome scopes on these handheld meters soon. One can hope :) I've not got a cat anymore Harv.. I sold it as my spectrum analyser needed the shelf space :D

On the 10A setting you could see the reading increasing and it seemed to accelerate. I'd guess that the resistance of the internal shunt was increasing due to heating.

Obrigado
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 2 года назад
As always.. special precautions and equipment must be taken when measuring or working around mains voltages. Regarding this meter.. It will measure mains voltage and also indicate the mains waveform. However fast signal fluctuations or transient spikes etc will unlikely be detected as the scopes sampling rate is nowhere near fast enough to capture/display such rapid detail.

Thanks John 👍 Excellent Review of This Multimeter. I just want to ask you it can measure high frequency DC voltage like Choper Transformer Output and FET gate Voltage etc...
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
Hi.. Yes it can measure chopper outputs and transistors switching etc, in fact only yesterday I was measuring the transformer output in a small control unit PSU. It was only around 20v/60kHz, but as I couldn't find my differential probes I used the Mustool to get an idea. Please consider though that to measure precision or accurate voltages timings etc, a more accurate scope than just a hand held one would be required, these scopes are made down to a price and thus are limited in their ability, however they are ok if you just need to do a quick signal check etc. Hope this helps

Thanks for the review - does it accurately hit its maximum frequency or is anything say above 20 MHz impossible to interpret on it? I bought a DSO138 and it hits up to 200 kHz but was sold as going up to 1 MHz. Thank you
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 3 года назад
The MDS 8207 will display frequencies correctly up to around 40MHz and is considered in spec.. However over 40MHz as expected the signal amplitude is reducing greatly & the unit starts to become unstable as it is going out of specification & range at this point. Cheers John

There seems to be nothing quite like it at a similar price but did I miss something or is there no HRC fuse and no smaller fuses for the mA range ? Also no diode limit circuitry in conjunction with the MOV - or did you just not mention it ?
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
I apologize for not replying sooner. I think like many of these meters now they're using SMD fuses which isn't great IMO.. As you can't beat a couple of decent sized HRC fuses put where they should be. There was a fuse on the mA range but I was just a bit quick moving the meter around.. you can just spot it though at 24:50. Cheers John

In my first attempt to use the oscilloscope function, I was getting a lot of spurious signals. Some of them were DC pulses some of them were AC frequencies. The instructions say that the instrument is not shielded and I can believe it. I have to be careful of where I set the meter if I'm taking an oscilloscope measurement because I have to repeatedly hit the R button (reset), in order to eliminate spurious readings that are coming in over the probes. Have you experienced this? Or do I have a defective unit? Thank you.
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
I've not experienced this personally however I don;t use this meter much, plus 'm not in a very noisy environment really. I would guess perhaps that the majority of the noise is being picked up from the leads themselves. Perhaps try assembling a set of shorter leads for your tests to see if that helps any.

Where did you apply a 40MHz signal or anything close to it to see if it can actually display 40MHz properly?
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
Oops.. Well spotted.. That part of the video was somehow left on the cutting room floor. Totally my own fault, I would't have even known it was missing except for you mentioning it. Anyway.. the little device will definitely display a 40MHz sine wave as I was looking a one on it last week. 41.5MHz actually, albeit with a diminishing signal level as the unit is above its maximum frequency spec at this point.

@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 3 года назад
The multimeter/digital frequency display can't read above around 60kHz If set correctly the scope meter will read up to a maximum of around 48MHz on the display. But it's maximum bandwidth spec is actually rated at 40MHz. This means that beyond 40MHz you'll be loosing signal amplitude from your reading even though it will still displays the signal.

The MDS8207 response frequency bandwidth is 40MHz, your signal 500 kHz is 80 times less than the scope should not has a problem.

Hi, thank you for your great review! I am considering buying this multimeter for repairing old cars injection systems. I need to measure DC voltages and look at the graph in realtime. Is the meter capable of displaying irregular dc changes in oscilloscope mode? (Like you can see in this diagram powerboxer.de/images/stories/theorie/lambda/L-mess05.gif) It would really help me out to know that. Thanks in advance!
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 3 года назад
Hi there. Unfortunately I cannot see your image as the link doesn't seem to work for me. Ok so.. reading DC voltages with this meter is not a problem. With regards to displaying waveforms in 'real time'.. Well.. As long as whatever you're trying to read is within the meters specifications then you should be ok, however I would not say that these 'scopes' are capable of displaying real time signals, as there is always a delay between signal detection and display on the screen. If a signal is varying in amplitude or time, or is inconsistent these units are not really suitable/reliable. Detecting something like a consistent 12v injector misfire may be possible, but I would not rely on one of these meters for diagnosing/detecting things like intermittent fast faults as you'll miss them. You'd likely be spending more time trying to figure out why the meter/scope is not displaying what you're expecting to see. My advise for automotive diagnostics etc would be to get yourself a better dedicated scope, or even a suitable bench scope. I know they're a lot more expensive but you'll be glad in the end.

@@OrbiterElectronics Thanks for your quick reply! Totally makes sense that you adivse me to get a proper oscilloscope but sadly I am just not able to afford one, I am still in education and dont have the money for it... Also I would anyway need a proper multimeter because mine is a 20$ one that cant even do a continuity test... I can really benefit from other functions of this multimeter mine does not have, like auto range, capacity test, temperature measuring etc... Its not just the oscilloscope that would be an Upgrade To be a bit more specific: the problem I want to diagnose is a possible faulty lambda probe. It puts out DC Voltages between 0,2 and 0,9 Volts and just jumps back and fourth between them until it stabilizes at an inconsistent frequency of around 1 Hz (at engine idle) So it is not a very fast signal and even though it is inconsistent I should be able to see it on the screen in my understanding, right? Hope you can understand my thoughts and sorry for my bad english, I am from Germany 😉
