in this video i explained what is class X, Y Rated Capacitor, EMI RFI Suppression Safety Capacitor, What is X, Y Rating, how class x or classy capacitor work in circuit. class x capacitor is also known "ACROSS THE LINE CAPACITOR" it is installed between Line and neutral, while cass Y is connected between Line to Earth, and Neutral to Earth, Class-X / Y capacitors help to minimize the generation of EMI/RFI and the negative effects associated with received EMI/RFI in the circuit. to take a useful work from these capacitors to perform their EMI/RFI filtering tasks, the class X are directly connected to the AC power input, that is, the AC “line” and the AC “neutral” (see Figure 2 below). And because of this direct connection to the AC voltage, the capacitors may be subjected to overvoltages and/or voltage transients-lightning strikes, power surges. Thus, capacitor failure is a very real possibility.
When a Class-X capacitor, also referred to as an "across the line capacitor"-the capacitor placed between line and neutral-fails because of an overvoltage event, it is likely to fail short. This failure, in turn, would cause an overcurrent protective device, like a fuse or circuit breaker, to open. Therefore, a capacitor failing in this fashion would not cause any electrical shock hazards.
If a Class-Y capacitor, also known as the "line to ground capacitor" OR "the line bypass capacitor"-it is connected between line and ground-fails short, this could lead to a fatal electric shock due to the loss of the ground connection. Class-Y safety capacitors are designed to fail open. A failure will cause your electronic device to be subjected to the noise and interference that the capacitor would normally filter out, but at least there will be no fatal electric shock hazard.

One of the best explanation on youtube. It is very helpful to people who search it. But missing information, X class without internal fuse, so that if fail will short the terminal and Y class with internal fuse so that if fail will open terminal (internal fuse blown). Salam
@HaseebElectronics
@HaseebElectronics 2 года назад
best regards. class x or class y stages are added after fuse, if a continuous strike of pulses arrive and it exceeds than the mov limits, and the LC filter reaches in ringing factor so it will increase the filter current and the class X capacitor have to short internally, so it must blow away the fuse. this ringing factor may happen due to external electromagnetic interference or something wrong in smps switching section
@kartinosurodipo4520
@kartinosurodipo4520 2 года назад
@@HaseebElectronics It is correct for X type. But for Y there is internal fuse. That is main different with X type. X type is actually same cap as any other cap. The different is Y cap which has internal fuse. Not all GND has good connection to allow amount current flow to blow mains fuse. And it can create danger of shock at chassis. It is different case with X which has full current when fail. You can check at many explanation by googling it.

Thank u for this video. Among all electronic video on RU-vid your video i love most. Thanks for that. As I know for AC cap provide close path for current, while blocking DC. Then why these cap doesn't make short circuit. From kolkata. Sandy
@HaseebElectronics
@HaseebElectronics 3 года назад
i am thankful for your valuable comment as i discussed in the video that every capacitor have XL value that is capacitive reactance. that is in simple words "the ac resistance of a capacitor" at low frequency its internal resistance is very high, so it will provide short path. at high frequency its internal resistance will decrease, so in that case it will give easy path for high frequency but it will not disturb low frequency signals

@db1236 3 года назад
Excellent, as usual. What happens if a 1.5KV spike arrives to an X3 capacitor? Does the cap go short/open? Or simply it doesn't do its job? (and doesn't damage itself)
@HaseebElectronics
@HaseebElectronics 3 года назад
special thanks x3 capacitor have "peak impulse voltage" less than 1.2 KV. it means 1200 volt is the highest limit of peak. above this it have to fly away. as its operating voltage range might be 150 or 275 volt etc. while working if it receives peaks of 1.2KV and the MOV is unable to remove it, then this safety capacitor will end. as its basic responsibility is to bypass high frequency please accept my best regards
