As I know: Y class designed to not obtain short circuit failure mode because you dont want that your chassis become live after cap failure. X class designed to not catch at fire at failure. Pupped fuse ok-ish but huge no no no to flames. According conciquences of cap failures we chouse what type is needed. Does this vidio menthioning something about it?

hello, thanks for this useful topic. I have 2 questions: 1- For a Y-type capacitor we need earth ground to bypass common mode noise is this ground the same as protective earth ground used in power lines or it's something else? 2- in ethernet applications also has a transformer and isolation barrier can we use a Y-Type cap for those too?

Thanks for sharing this info ! Are these the same capacitors can be used as a RC Snubber ? I dont see the ESR anywhere in the datasheet.

They are not normally used in RC snubber type of circuit because of how they fail (open or short) or because they may not have the right capacitance value. The value of these capacitors can be pretty small, whereas your particular RC snubber might work better if the capacitor is large.

So that is why you measure half mains over DC- and mains earth right? 115V in my case

There is a catch with these x- and y-capacitors. They introduce high enough leakage, which prevents them from being used in medical designs.

Sweet!! I'm pretty sure I'm a capacitor cause of the metalized anti reflection lenses on my glasses. Charge me up!

Most important of all. AVOID RIFA caps.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 5 месяцев назад
Rifa hasn't been around for a while. And the bad caps are specifically ones made in the 70s and 80s, there's no need to be too suspicious of more modern ones.

@@SianaGearz Actually no. I have this guy that wants "all original" for old equipment. Mouser and Digi-key still sell them. And there is a large surplus of "new-old stock" of these on eBay and such. And yes some batches bought from the likes of Mouser did go bad (i.e. cracked cases) after 3-4 years. Partly correct that they are prevalent on older equipment but I can see some new players buying these things. If someone must be all original or got them by mistake, I'd advise to at least check them during regular servicing or just get rid of them.
