Amazing Levi. So well filmed. Can we also stop and take a moment to appreciate that creating content in cold weather is also incredibly difficult. Not to mention the physical nature of what you where doing. I am a commercial sports fishing photographer and I shot a lot of ice fishing content. It’s incredibly tiring to just exist and move around in multiple layers of clothing all while your body has to work hard to keep warm. And then on top of that you also have to be creative and work with electronics in cold conditions. So what you have filmed is pretty incredible. Hats off to you! Keep creating!

Next time, mix the snow and water in another bucket and use it like mortar for bricks. You want like a slushie consistency. Then, coat the seams with a bit of that mix, and then put the reg snow over that. This will create a much stronger bond. Your bricks can also be slightly rounded rather than slanted. This will bring the circle in toward itself without fighting gravity. Believe me, I know how difficult it is to build these. Practice the craft. Thank you for embracing this, as it is something that is dying out with time.

Years ago, when I was in school, we learnt a lot of general knowledge as well as geography and so on, that's where I read how an igloo was built by the people who live in such places. They explained how the blocks were shaped to become a dome over the top, so it will be interesting to see how you go, the information is out there. Apparently the igloo can get so warm that the people took their clothes off once it all warmed up. That sort of extremely cold climate is not to be fooled around in, so much can go wrong. I do enjoy watching you managing to survive and also like to see the gear that modern people now use which makes me appreciate the bravery and sometimes foolhardiness of the early ill equipped explorers who went up there for science - real science. Thanks for the great videos - I am here watching, warm and toasty, with a hot cup of tea. Regards to all.

your video got me to thinking: make a box the size of a ice block, no top, no bottom. shovel snow into it and pack it down and you've got a block that way lighter, way more insulative that frozen water. if it breaks, easy to remake. don't need a chainsaw, which is definitely a single-point-of-failure, no heavy tools needed. great video, by the way.

Keep you centered pin cord in place during the build. Cut the end of the cord to touch the inner wall of blocks at the bottom of the first level. Make sure that the top edge of each new row of blocks touches the tip of the cord with each new row. This will cause an inward angle to each new row and will start closing untoward the top center. This makes the structure quite strong as well. Great video!

First time watching this channel but I really enjoyed it. I was trying to find a video to listen to while drawing but ended up watching more than actually drawing. This is the kind of stuff I wish I could just go out and do, it just looks like so much fun, probably not comfortable, but fun.

Hey Levi - first time watcher here... and I had an idea on a different way to make an ice home. 1 - Gather the snow together into the shape you want. Pack it just enough to hold the shape you want. 2 - Get some old sheets and soak them in water and lay them on top of the snow. Let them freeze. 3 - Use a water pump (hand or electric) to keep adding layers of ice on top. 4 - Once the ice is as think as you want, dig the snow out of your new ice home. Fewer tools, faster setup, roof with no sticks, very original YT content. If you want, you can use warm water to remove the fabric layer from the inside. Why haul ice when you can make it?

In Florida, we also had a "Freeze Warning" today. It dropped to 40F!😳 Gonna see if I can cut some Ice at the beach. Jokes aside, damn Levi, this was so enjoyable to watch. Mad respect for filming all this in freezing temperatures in Canada. So cinematic and enjoyable to watch.

The roof solution my mind keeps going back to is to angle the blocks, probably starting with the second layer for more internal space, inward toward the center until there's a small enough space to put one or more long pieces across the top. The main problems with this are that 1: I have _no_ idea what the shear strength of ice is so the angles needed might break. And 2: It would be _way_ more work to angle all the pieces correctly.

You use the rope drilled into the ground in the middle to measure out the angles needed to make a perfect dome that supports itself

I am new here. Honestly I'd say your pretty damn sturdy fella. You cut all that ice, figured out how to get your cold ducks in a row, and got it done either way. Not alot of souls do that for fun lol. All I can say is well done. And dude you look just as frozen as your igloo. Be careful. 😉

I’m not even 15min in but this was so beautifully filmed, though I’m sure the surroundings helped with half the beauty on its own! So satisfying to watch. Can’t imagine how much more tiring it must’ve been to use the ice saw rather than an electrical device like the chainsaw.

I imagine that an igloo heated with a small wood stove keeps the warmth better, and also protects better against strong winter storms with temperatures of less than 40 degrees C., and predators, than any winter-proof tent.
@RootzRockBand

I considered the warm stove, but would that not melt the ice over time?
@whitenoise509
@whitenoise509 2 года назад
Having the interior warm for long periods of time does melt the ice a fair amount. As long as you don't have heat going 24/7 it actually ends up making a more uniform floor after a while. With ice this thick you could probably have the heat on for over a week before seeing an issue with thickness. My only real concern would be how heavy the walls are on the ice over the water.

Knowing and accepting the risks of the lake, I can respect that. Although one thing I have wondered about igloos. How warm could you even have it? Considering the walls are ice. Would they not start melting? And this project certainly took alot of time and effort to build. But their is something magical about building your own shelter that protects you against the elements. I have built a hut with sticks, branches, hey, and mud. Takes only a few hours. Although some of those things be hard to get in that environment considering how cold it is.

I'm impressed with just the notion that you're out there building it to begin with because I would not be able to do that. Right now as I'm watching this I'm in a mildly cooler temperature from what we had say in the last couple of days right here first thing in the morning I'm freezing my butt off so I definitely couldn't be in some kind of tundra doing something like this. Lol
