I'd liked to seen a 10 mm round closer to the same weight as the 45 ACP. I think the results would have been close to the same. However, a side by side should be close to the same.

The ways things are these days is thta you are able to do a lot of defense with MANY calibers. There is no limit of choices. (many men have been killed with a $25 .32 Iver Johnson)(they used t be $25 at the hardware store).. many men did grocery shopping with a .22 over/.410 under..(and a Shakespeare bass rod) walking along a RR track. today we have variety of choices and they'll do the job. STILL the WHO-TEE-TOO videos are the best! Well, Hickok too (he's in Tennessee also) and paul harrell ,, they are the best for explanation and objectivity

Except that the 9mm kills more people than any other round. the FBI concluded that the 9mm round is the all around best handgun caliber for carry. Look up their research. If they the FBI don't know what their talking about then who does?
@vashmatrix5769
@vashmatrix5769 3 года назад
@@howardtrix3145 not that I'd put much stock in the fbi anymore but I'm pretty sure .22 kills more. I could be wrong & I don't have time to check it this morning but that 1st number seems dependant on the laws of the area & usage. As for what they finally picked... yes they picked 9mm in the end because of modern powders & the low recoil which most got better scores on. That doesn't make it the best "all around" as much as the best for a variety of people as a standard. Obviously 10mm is better if you're of a larger frame with more dexterity. .40 & 9mm seem close but still depends on the user's size & strength of dexterity. Just different ballistic purposes. For most women, my mum, & elder men I know I always will suggest 380 or 9mm. It's a balance of purpose & strength/ dexterity of the user. I can handle 10mm, for my mum I recommend 380. Anyone between I suggest 9mm, which reflects the fbi using 9mm. That would give the best average score for an average size & strength of dexterity.
@vashmatrix5769
@vashmatrix5769 3 года назад
@@howardtrix3145 I shouldn't forget to mention 45... even with a bigger hole I'd rather have more capacity with 10mm & more penetration. It also has its place for a bigger hole but moving slower. Since the recoil is close to 10mm I'd prefer more rounds & penetration with 10mm than the bigger hole and hit from a 45. It's all relative & since we don't have to all get one gun I suggest everyone try them all & choose what works best for their size & dexterity.

@@marblemarble7113 As I interpret the title "10mm vs. 45 acp hollow points for CDC" its pretty clear that the idea was to compare the 2 calibers to determine which is better. I will give the nod to the 10 mm as the more powerful cartridge however the one difference with the two rounds I see is the .45 auto is firing the heaviest bullet in its weight range and is subsonic. The 10 mm has one of the lightest bullets I've ever seen in factory rounds. I will say because of '20/'21shortages that probably only gave you limited options. If the .45 had 185 grain XTPs and the 10 mm had 180 or 200 grain XTPs I would see that as a close match & want to see what they do to the clay!

I shoot both a lot and love to reload both. 230 grain hp in a standard 45acp pressure is hap hazzard as far as its expansion reliability. Drop the weight of the 45 to 185 and youll get far better expansion reliability, and in the 1000 to 1100 fps in terms of speed(without having to go +p). Or if youre really wanting to jump up the 45s fps, they make the 45 bullets in 165 grain jhp and that will really increase the speed (about 1200fps). Yeah, youll be pretty close to these 10mm at that point and still with a slightly heavier projectile. So for the 45acp guys out there.....just reload. Its not an anemic round at all. Its just a big ass chunk and going to go slower unless you drop the weight of the projectile so you can increase speed safely. Just look at what a 230 grain 10mm travels at. Still faster than these 45s in the video, but not near 500fps faster. More like 100 to 150 in my tests.

I just got rid of my 10 mm. The last determining factor was testing by Paul Herrel. His test showed the ten mm superior to the .45 but only by a small margin. I also am better set up with .45 acp much better. I seriously doubt that an animal that would handily be killed with a ten mm would survive and kill you if shot with a .45. If your first shot fails repeat if necessary. That applies for all calibers.
@Gitfidlpickr
@Gitfidlpickr 3 года назад
@@bobgordon1754 Yes!! This is the kind of thinking that makes sense. ALL calibers have certain specific characteristics BUT anything 38 +P or above is formidable. MOST milk bottle type rifle calibers are formidable. (In terms of repelling attacks whether animal or human) a shooter generally fires a whole magazine .. not one-shot then take a look. A magazine might have 5 or even 10 rounds .. 6 rounds of 38 +P and that ends if .. except for maybe Cape Buffalo and most of us have something bigger than that. 357, 45, 44, 30-06 ..they all work .. 223 does the job Maybe more important (these days) is the availability of the round .. or the reload components .. and the level of skill needed to reload and support the caliber ... I agree that 45 ACP, 45 Colt and 357 are very good choices to rely upon. Powders, primers, cast lead, bullet shape, bullet weight, brass, .. dies, powder measures, scales, shelf space, reloading press, all part of supporting a specific gun or set of guns.

Well now that was a interesting video and I knew that the 10 mm being lighter bullet and faster feet per second would do more damage to the clay and it is just generally considered that the 10 mm around is more powerful than a 45 ACP. However I will stick with the 45 ACP the ammo is cheaper and easier to find.

I have both .45 and 10mm. The 10mm holds 13+1 and the .45 holds 7+1.The 10mm is more powerful and has a snappier recoil. Much like a .40 on steroids.. The .45 has a much gentler recoil. More like a push. I carry the .45. Bottom line is both will do the job but which can you shoot better? Of course the 10 can take down big game... but that's another argument..

Both damn good rounds, 10mm does it for me for the sheer amount of damage it can deal combined with its higher capacity. Also it's generally cheaper, from what I've seen. However, the .45ACP is already a powerful-ass cartridge and boasts a heavier bullet, and as such you shouldn't have to worry about overpenetration with it. On top of that, it's much more controllable thanks to its lighter recoil. As far as bang for your buck (NPI) is concerned, the 10mm wins for its sheer amount of power and capacity, but that also comes with higher recoil. For more human-populated areas, the .45ACP I think is just in the sweet-spot of being good enough and wouldn't be overkill (possibly literally).

Illinois just passed a new hunting regulation on clay blocks. One clay block limit and the season is Feb 1st from midnight to 1:00am, however in order to get the permit you must have a FOID (firearm owner identification) card, a hunting license, a habitat stamp, a waterfowl stamp, blaze brown safety clothing, your birth certificate, finger and toe prints by the BATF and a cholesterol test approved and stamped by a Notary Public. So by the time you have all that's necessary to hunt the clay blocks the season is over and as usual Illinois has your money and you have a handful of papers.

EDC should be the one that is comfortable enough to wear EVERYWHERE, able to access rapidly, able to hit MULTIPLE targets MULTIPLE times in the shortest time. Hits with a 22lr are more likely to stop an assault than misses from the 500 S&W. One should carry enough to put 3 HITS on 3 moving targets. Few handguns will make one shot stops with toro hits. When one observes how a deer or pig runs after being shot in a non-CNS area, the time it takes it to expire can be transferred to the time an attacker can still be doing mayhem to YOU. The 500 with its 5 shot capacity really makes it tough to fulfill that test, whereas the autos that hold 7+ give a bit more "wiggle room" with faster reloads. Using a lighter bullet in either the 45ACP or 10mm will reduce recoil which allows faster followup shots. Man may have been created from clay, but is not clay anymore. That said, it was "a really fun video".

The 10mm had 49.6% more impact energy and 3.7 % more momentum than the 45 at the muzzle. Your test distance was only a few yards so effectively still in that ballpark. A light fast bullet is always going to dump energy rapidly and make a dramatic impact. I suspect if you needed penetration the 45 would do better, however a light bullet in the 45 would be pretty dramatic on the clay. Nice fun video as usual, but take care of your eyes at that distance on exploding clay.

Put a 180 grain bullet on both cartridges the 10mm will get to 1000 fps while the 45acp will reach about 1150 fps. If you want to match the 10mm speed with the 45acp, just lower the grains on the bullet. I personally carry a 180 grain. The .45 cartridge has a superior potential for speed compared to the 10mm because it has a higher volume in the cylinder. The 230 is way too slow and it's like lobbing a musket round. If what you're looking for is penetration over the impact wound cavity, then go with the 10mm and get the smaller bullet. If what you're interested in is a larger wound cavity on impact with less penetration, then you go with the .45. A Corbon's cartridge for a 45acp with a 165grain bullet gets you 1250fps from a 4 inch barrel and 1300+ from a 5" barrel.

I've had the opportunity to fire full size Glocks in 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 10mm. The 9mm has a sharp recoil. I don't like the feel of it. The .45 ACP has a big recoil, but soft. Granted, I bought the 10mm before I tried the .45, so that may have influenced my idea of "soft". I liked shooting the .45. The .40 S&W fell somewhere between, but still felt a little sharp to me. The 10mm, same diameter as the .40 S&W and a longer case, felt as big as the .45, but with a harder recoil, though not sharp like a 9mm. The recoil is probably not as big as a .357 Magnum revolver. I chose a Glock 20 because I felt the shock produced by the higher velocity 10mm would have more stopping power than the heavier .45 ACP. I have no idea if that is true, but that was what I was thinking. Having tried both, I don't think you can go wrong with either round. Glock has a reputation for reliability. There is effectively no safety, so if there is a round in the chamber and you pull the trigger, it will fire. Your preferences may vary.

THAT is the reason to carry a 10mm, and probably the ONLY reason, in our litigious society. I carry a Glock 20, loaded with Double Tap WFNGC (Wide Flat Nose Gas Check) ammunition, but only as a camp gun and only because I've had a mountain lion stalk my camping site once... and I see bear nearly every time I camp near the Black River in northern Arizona. If you shoot someone about to rape your wife, an anti-gun district attorney, and they are everywhere, will ask you why you didn't shoot the perp with a 9mm handgun. You'll be placed on "trial" for the caliber of your firearm, not what you did with it.

I love both calibers personally. I used to carry a Glock Gen3 in 45acp. Loved that gun but when ammo prices shot up a few years ago I had to sell it and get a 9mm Springfield Armory XDS. Because I simply couldn't afford to train with the 45acp and I'm a firm believer that you have to train with your carry guns and any other guns you own. As most people know shooting is a perishable skill and if you're not training you are just putting yourself and others at risk if you can't hit what you're aiming at.

Over penetration is a non issue because how much energy can a carry pistol round even have left after hitting the intended target ? Unless you are dumb enough to use FMJ ....it’s still going to dump a good deal of energy even if it’s FMJ. MISSES are always bad so it doesn’t matter what caliber you got if you miss and hit a bystander....it’s bad no matter what.

Slow and heavy penetrates deeper at times, that high velocity 10mm expands fast and loses power quick. Id bet a brick of .22lr and a box of .30-30 that the 230gr xtp in .45 would out penetrate the 155 xtp in 10mm, in say ballistic gel or bad guy.

@@fruitfarmfords8243 10mm’s generally penetrate much deeper then a 45, especially when it comes to hardcast or mono metal slugs. Slow 45’s also tend to be deflected much easier by denser materials, such as metal, or heavier boned creatures. And heavy and slow doesn’t guarantee penetration, generally speed does. A 5.56 green tip will penetrate a solid 5-6x deeper, through very dense material, then a 12 gauge 3” brenneke slug will.... Paul Harrell did a video on that I believe. Long story short, on weak humans a 45 ACP is still king. Big hole, generally stops in target, dispersing all of what little energy handguns have into the target. 10mm is the auto loader king for woods carry. Well, maybe second to a .50 AE, but that’s not much of a comparison...

@@fruitfarmfords8243 I’d bet double that it doesn’t matter either way because both are still just basic handgun rounds and over penetration is a non issue. It’s the misses you need to be worried about. People watch too many movies or repeat too much nonsense. As long as you know enough to carry proper defensive ammo , if you hit your target the odds of the round passing through and hitting someone beyond it with enough velocity left over to be lethal are pretty much nil. Not to mention.... if you are in a situation that’s so life or death that what’s behind your target isn’t a consideration before pulling the trigger then what choice did you have anyway ?

10mm for me. I carry mine when hunting for protection when the bolt action would not be fast enough or the animal gets to close. Hasn't happened yet and hope it never does. Lol.

Great video! I love a 10mm. Such an awesome round. I carry several 10mm Glocks and would love to see a test between a Glock 20 and Glock 29. I was wondering how much power you loose going to the shorter barrel on the Glock 29. The G29 is a handful and I believe it would still be an effective round.

A recent video from Alaska shows the survivor of a brown bear attack. The bear attacked with amazing speed, as per the man, but the man was able to use his 10 mm pistol to stop the bear. He said the bear fell dead on top of him. The man’s father fired his .40 caliber pistol into the bear’s head to make sure. The man accidentally put a 10 mm round through his own leg.
