48 HRS. (1982) | PARAMOUNT | 4K UHD REVIEW ** Is This Worth Upgrading Your Bluray? 

48 Hours is still my favorite Eddie Murphy movie. I saw it in theaters when it first came out and I think it absolutely still holds up today. It's a very, very good movie.

Beverly Hills cop 5/5. Where else are you going to find a banana in the tailpipe? (of a beige Ford). Late supper, sir. Shrimp salad sandwich. Compliments of Axel Foley.

An underrated Walter Hill movie is Bullet To The Head with Stallone.. it's cheesy as hell but Stallone is a badass and he has some hilarious lines. I think if it had been made 20-30 years earlier it would be considered a classic.

I agree with you. I prefer this one to Beverly Hills Cop as well. Never back down on your opinion. It's just as valid as the bullies who want to force their opinions on you. Popularity does not equate to quality.

I think what you have to factor in Ken with these older 4k title releases is that the picture always looks poor during the opening optical credit/title scenes. Once passed that opening the picture looks immediately much better, and by the time you reach the last act of the film your eyes are no longer comparing with the previous 4k you watched and you realise it is indeed a decent image. A little soft in some shots but that’s the way it was shot. Like you said Ken the HDR is the winner here. Good film. Good review.

I had the original Blu-Ray from years ago so I picked up the 4K two pack of both films. I haven’t watched them yet but probably over Christmas break I’ll check them out.

A little reminder: Movies shot on films used optical effects for their title overlay. (Because what else would they have done?) Everything done optical is one or more steps removed from the original camera negative. So the quality drops significantly. You can see the same effect when fades are used. Only after the introduction of digital intermediates could those effects be done without quality loss.

Mine should be here Tues. I mostly collect 80s cinema some 90s so I'm pumped for this. Thanks for the review as always.

Ken, check out Walter Hill's ..Southern Comfort. Great film. Shout Factory put it out. Hill is one of my favorite directors. Eddie Murphy's only hiccup in the 80s was .. The Golden Child... IMO. Every other film of his I own on 44/blu.

I appreciate the fact that you take the time to talk about the film itself first prior to digging into the 4K release itself.

My only small gripe with this transfer is a couple of sound-effects are missing: The "beep beep" of Nick Nolte's watch that wakes him up in the beginning and Eddie Murphy's hand trembling as he holds Billy Bear at gunpoint near the end. James Horner's score sounds great though! Lots of rumbling deep bass!

48hrs and another 48hrs are both good movies . Looked good on 4K to me. Not reference quality, but they sure didn’t look like 30 or 40 year old movies. It’s no Elf in picture quality. Definitely better than Beverly Hills cop. Best character is the yelling sergeant. He was in used cars and last action hero. Guy is hilarious.

3:03 as a huge fan of 'Beverly Hills Cop' you should be entitled to your opinion and share it and not care what others say about it. Whoever say it 'you shouldn't say that' are the problem, i would simply ignore that person

Walter Hill is the man! I watch movies not knowing it's him but then I see his name in the credits and it's always a good time.

Walter Hill directed one of my favorite westerns, "The Long Riders", with real brothers playing the James/Younger gang. James Remar is in this and The Warriors. He's a Walter Hill regular. I agree with you about 48 Hours v Beverly Hills Cop. I don't care for the sequels to either film.

48 hrs is hands down my favourite movie featuring Eddie Murphy. But it's all the performances and Hill that make this the one of my all time favourites

80's Eddie Murphy was amazing 👏

The reason BHC works is because it was something different. The action genre was and has been loaded with "serious" movies (especially in the 60's and 70's). BHC was a change of pace. It is a welcomed one for many. I don't think you shouldn't share your opinion, but the action genre has room for both more serious action and more comedic action. One note about Another 48 Hrs... It was originally something like 45 minutes longer than what we get, but the studio forced Walter Hill to trim it down. They (Murphy and Nolte) almost switch roles as Nolte is a bit more comedic than Murphy... Who comes across as angry in the movie.

What TV setting mode do you watch movies on? Cinema/movie, standard mode etc?

Movies shot on film do not have pixels- theys have grains. The grain IS the picture. If you smooth that out- you would be smearing the image.

If you say something is overrated, that’s clearly an opinion by default. You shouldn’t have to justify or clarify that kind of statement. I understand being in the minority. It’s been decades since I saw either of these here films but even though I recognize Beverly Hills Cop is a superior film, I have always enjoyed Beverly Hills Cop 2 much more. I got that Best Buy deal this week on the set. Looking forward to revisiting soon.

Bullet to the Head, Last Man Standing (where is the 4k on that one) and Trespass are also good ones he has directed.

paramount should have given a full 4k restoration to black rain and what lies beneath and ghost and the darkness instead, sigh...

It’s a great movie, but no way, in my opinion is it even close to Beverly Hills cop

48 Hours is better. Drop the mic.

Be warned. The picture of the 4k edition is zoomed in. You lose about 5-6 percent of the original framing, albeit the aspect ratio measures correctly at 1.85:1. Willful deception or incompetence? Either way not worth my money until I get an 100 percent uncorrupted framing.

My favorite walter hill film is hard times with charles Bronson and james Coburn from 1975. Charles Bronson is awesome.

U could of showed the actual dvd disk ...what a waste
