[4K] N&W Jawn Henry Pull Test - 2% Grade

I've finished the mechanical modifications and DCC installation in my Alco Models brass N&W steam turbine "Jawn Henry". This model was made in 1979 and as such had a fairly primitive running mechanism. I improved it where I could by replacing rubber couplings with universal joints and upgrading the motor, as well as adding nearly 4 pounds of weight to improve its pulling capabilities.
This is a video of a pulling test on the North Shore Model Railroad Club layout and it took nearly every car I own over the more than 2% eastbound grade without any issues (76 cars not counting tenders and caboose). This is obviously more than the prototype would pull and probably more than any other single locomotive has hauled over this grade in the 40+ years it has existed, so I'm pretty satisfied with that. I will be painting, decaling and installing lighting in the locomotive soon. After that I'll add more cars and see what its limit really is.

Impressive model! Your work on the layout is first rate too!

I can't claim any credit for the layout, it's my club's layout and I've done nothing on the scenery myself. It's great having a place like this to run my models though.

Does any original sound recordings exist of this locomotive ?
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 2 года назад
Interestingly, yes. I've found two. One is a brief segment in a video compilation entitled "Hooters on Blue Ridge", though it sounds as though the Jawn is only idling when it passes the camera. The other is available on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-APzxcyuEVaU.html

Would you pls. allow me to use the footage too? I may include it in my outros or in a song. (Same reasons like in your AE video.)

Sorry, but I'd rather you didn't.

How did you go about adding weight to the loco?
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 2 года назад
I bought some blocks of tungsten off ebay which were close to a usable size, then had them cut in half to fit the available spaces on a wire EDM machine at work. Tungsten is very difficult to cut conventionally. I did drill holes for mounting in several of the blocks and screwed them into plates I soldered into the shell and frame. To drill a total of 6 holes I went through about 8 carbide drill bits. There are easier ways to use tungsten for weighting locomotives, many different smaller pieces are available for pinewood derby cars or crankshaft weights.

Great model, hopefully it will be painted soon. Btw, it must have been a bear to install DCC since older brass models have a tendency to short. The big question...what happened to your 4k outdoor railroad photography?
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 3 года назад
Shorts really haven't been an issue due to the design of the electrical pickup. It has pickup of one rail on the front pair of trucks, and the other rail from the rear pair with both isolated from the body. As for rail videos, more will be coming. I've been very busy recently.

Impressive! Which soundfile did you use? I don’t know much about the prototype, did it have an air horn as opposed to a steam whistle? Certainly an unusual beast.

I used a modified version of the german dampfturbine sound set as that is the only steam turbine set Loksound offers. It was originally equipped with a standard hooter whistle, but the high boiler pressure (600 psi) caused it to be very shrill so they replaced it with a Nathan M5 air horn which is what this sound set represents.

@@NorfKhazad Thanks for the info. To the best of my knowledge there is only one remaining operable steam turbine loco in the world, located in Finland. I wonder if Loksound used that for the recording? 600psi...yes, I hadn’t thought hoe that would affect the whistle note! Keep up the good work.
