4K Video Test ¦ Locomotives running past. [ Is it better?]

Hi, I had not realised my camera can do 4K video, seems to be all the rage these days but what does it mean? Well normally I make videos in 1920 by 1080 pixels, whereas 4K is 3840 by 2160 pixels, so a much bigger resolution.
However it takes up masses of disk space and is for my with my equipment very hard going while editing.
As you can see I can do it, but is it worth it, can you see a difference? Let me know in the comments below.

It is beautifully crisp and clear, but the old resolution was perfectly adequate. Ease of editing and economical storage is more important really. It's your content and your skilful filming and editing that count. I should leave well alone.

Totally agree here. Your knowledge and presentation is super - no need for change. It is interesting to note that you can produce really good content without having a massive layout. The green screen is a real bonus to ring the chages.

Looked very clear and sharp Mike. I assume this was all shot in 4K? If not, then I couldn't tell which was and was not 4K. I would say that content (and information) is king on your channel and may not be worth the extra effort...

Its certainly great for showing the colour of models. East Asiatic company and the booster look perfect, as of they were Infront of me. But your videos are fine the way they are, no need to mess with a winning formula.

Definitely an improvement inn quality Mike. But....your videos are that good both interesting and informative the picture quality at 1080 was perfectly acceptable. 😊 Good luck if you decide to go 4k but if it proves too difficult go back to 1080, i for one will not be disappointed. Regards Pete.

Yes, keep it simple and manageable. Like the saying goes; "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good". 1080p is good enough.

Your videos are good the way they are. 4K is better, but when you stick to your own devices, the quality is nicer. I may not like to look at a Southern Spam Can steamy in BR Blue, but capturing LNER A4 Sir Nigel Gresley in that colour for real on the main line is right up my alley. It's a pity you don't have an LNER A4 Pacific steamy in BR Blue. I'm sure she would suit your railway to an extent.

For running locomotives the most important thing is the FPS: with at least 60fps the movement is filmed sharper and the details of the locomotive are better visible. If one needs to choose between 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps I would go for the second. Best regards! Erik

Hi Mike. I just checked the video at 4k and at 1080p RU-vid settings and couldn't really see a difference (27inch monitor). I wouldn't expect it to be worth the heartache and extra time involved while editing to be honest. Unless your camera supports 60 fps at 4k (or is it only 50 on RU-vid?) fast moving locos should actually look smoother at 1080p. Whichever way you go we'll all be watching. Content quality over pixel number anytime in my book. Cheers!

Ah thanks very much for checking. Camera only does 25fps in 4K, I normally shoot at 50fps in 1080p unless it's a photo show.

Mike, quality is always so much better with Southern locomotives or have I misunderstood the question? - Colin 😉 _My perception is the video quality looks better but being visually impaired I might not be the best person to ask. The next question will be is the improved resolution actually worth the increased disk space and editing time?_ Have you thought about placing the camera on a tripod then film a moving (Southern) train in both setting to create a short comparison clip?

Hard to tell Mike, as I wasn't entirely sure what clips were in 4k. perhaps some subtitles indicating this might help.

It does look better to me, but only marginally. To really reap the reward of 4k, the viewer needs a device that can show it. My moniter can do up to 2k natively but watching with 4k has never been a problem, I just can't see the exact sharpness that it offers. The key here is value. How much is gained by going all 4k? Probably not much. It seems like it will be a lot more work for only a little more polish that can only be enjoyed by a few people. I think you should stick to 1080 HD for now with maybe the occasional glamour shot in 4k.

4K isn't worth the hassle with storage and editing your videos are great as they are. In order to go the next step up you would really need to increase the lighting (without blowing out the subject - not easy) and increase the frame rate rather than the number of pixels in the frame. Either way it just isn't worth the pain. I would say "stay as you are", but obviously your choice.

I can't really tell the difference, what with the added You-tube jitter. Statics are sharper, but rolling by vids are equally blurred.

Ah yes, this 4k is at 25 frames per second while I usually shoot at 50 FPS giving smoother and less blurry video

I'd stay with the usual format, couldn't see much difference, when I compared this film to previous ones. Perhaps the colour appears true, edges and details looked crisp. but couldn't be sure. Probably not worth the disk space or process time. Thanks.

Yes it's better, but adding to what I said in another comment, if the increased editing effort is going to rob you of the joy and pleasure of making your films, then it's just not worth it. Be kind to yourself, Mike.

I watch on a 1920 by 1080 PC monitor, I started watching with YT on Auto res 720, it was jerky, so I set it to 4k, still Jerky, so I set yt to 1920 by 1080 and it was good. Can I tell any difference, no.
