Welcome to this somewhat sentimental video looking back to my experiences with the Triang Big Big Train.
We’ll look at my tribute to this classic model train from the past.
As some may know in the early 70s maybe 72 and 73 Triang made a battery operated O gauge Hymek class 35 with coaches or wagons and red plastic O gauge track.
What can I do to keep its spirit alive? Stay tuned to find out.
please note that my choice of coaching stock (MK2) was made to stay in keeping with the coaches supplied with the Big big train, i.e. mark 2s. Hymeks didn't have airbrake fittings or Eth of course.
Sound note, my class 35 library is very lacking, grateful as ever to the usual supporters.

My pet gerbil used to happily ride in the open wagon at a low speed trip around the circle of red plastic track

That is a very nice tribute to your big Hymek. We all have precious things that connect us to people we have loved and lost and to happy times made happier by kind people. A very good buy and nicely modified.

Another great story and again a new discovery for me, nice job with the head code, Strange how for many of us it's the model railway items that have a strong link to our past. For me it's a Hornby, City of London and 2 coach set. I still clearly remember the first time it ran round our dining table well over 60 years ago. Great memories. Thanks again Mike.

A great little video. I got a freight set for Christmas ‘67, the memories came flooding back. The EFE is a good looking Hymek, lovely runner too.

Another charming video and how nice to be able to revist happy childhood times spent with your dad and the O gauge Hymek. I had a Triang OO Hymek in my childhood days. A very strong puller I recall but very slow geared. Happy days.

Thank you for taking us on another excellent factual and sentimental model railway journey! I remember seeing the the Triang Big Train on sale at department store (George Henry Lee’s) at around (1972). In awe of the sheer size of the models, I thought the red track was however an absolute turn-off. Your tribute however, has style!

I didnt have a big train, but i do remember them. They were quite the part in their day. The coaches were a bit scetchy if i remember rightly. This model looks good and sounds great. 👍👍👍👍

You know, solely from a looks standpoint, the Hymek is one of my least favorite diesels. However in the BR blue with the small yellow panel and white window surrounds makes me think again - it really is very nice looking indeed ! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Mike, sorry for your 'Blue Flyer' loss 😥 but what a fitting tribute! 😎 Decades ago friend had one of these which we ran on his local 3.5" /5" live steam railway (Goff's Park) - 'O' gauge would run on the difference of the two gauges although the track joints could be harsh! 😄 Do you remember the Hymeks coming into Pompey? 🤔

Hi Mike. Another video with which I have an affinity. My boyhood Triang Hornby Hymek (no rear bogie pickups) finally expired a couple of months the ago, and I've replaced it with a later Hornby version (with rear bogie pickups).

Lovely video. If I didn't model the southern it would be western hydraulics all day long. The hymek is a particularly nice locomotive, my preference is the green one. Although the experimental chromatic blue was nice. And the dapol 52 in maroon is very tempting. I saw a lot of conversions of big big hymeks in the 90's along with detailed lima mk1's and 33's. O gauge didn't necessarily have to cost a fortune. But this is the first time I have seen one in its original condition. I didn't even realise it was battery powered! Thanks for the upload :)

Hi Mike I always enjoy when you describe your old stories of old locos. If I could be boring here for a moment though... Firstly the cab of those heljan/ efe locos isn't quite right. In fact I'd even say the old triang / hornby has a better shaped cab. Secondly....yes I'm splitting hairs lol, but they have no eth to power those air conditioned coaches as well as only vac brakes which I'm pretty sure the mk2f never had. Anyway. Just tongue in cheek comments. Keep up the reminiscing!
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Месяц назад
Thanks 👍 not really noticed an issue with the shape, I'll check my drawings later. Yes I did think I should have included an explanation about the coach choice. It was simply to keep in line with the original Triang Big, Big train coaches which were modelled after mk2s

What a wonderful story Mike, though it’s a shame the old O gauge toy was condemned I think the new OO gauge model with it’s far greater detail and control ability makes up for the loss.

That does look good. I have seen 'Big Train' layouts at a few shows. If Triang had made it work financially, and the range had gone on to include say a 9F, Inter-city 125, Flying Scotsman, A4, there would be whole clubs devoted to them. The nearest you see now is the Playmobile layouts at some shows, and increasingly Lego layouts - 0 gauge or even gauge 1. Personally I think the Big Train look - and more serious attitude to model railways - would knock both of those out of the water. So shame it didn't succeed.

Totally agree 👍💯

Great video once more and I feel your pain with having to say goodbye to your old class 35. The purest in me though - for which I apologise in advance - wonders about a non-ETH vacuum brake only loco hauling a rake of air brake only stock that needs an ETH supply to work the air-conditioning.... Good excuse for another video?... 😄😄😄
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Месяц назад
Many thanks 🙏 ah yes, I was going to stick mk1s behind her but the O gauge coaches were MK2 so to stick to the story I went for them

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited an interesting aside though is that it was the introduction of air-conditioned stock that effectively finished any arguments that the Western Region could come up with for keeping the diesel hydraulics. The fact that an auxiliary generator could so easily be tagged on the end of an existing diesel electric set up to provided an ETH supply compared to the complications when doing it to a hydraulic system - although it could be done.
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Месяц назад
Yes, you are right there. Shame in many ways, how did they get on in the EU as they stayed with hydraulic locos?
