You can get small brushes like that for cleaning paint gun for autobody painting. Most times if you buy a paint gun it will come with a brush the same as you have their.

Its awesome that you answer every comment. Thanks for helping everyone out. I have a 99 silverado. Its having a delayed shift when going into second. Whenever I'm very light on the throttle there is no problem and its shifts fine. But during normal driving it doesn't shift into 2nd until around 3000 to 3500 rpm and sometimes I have to let of the gas a bit for it to shift. This only happens when going into 2nd, all others seem to be fine. I was thinking of changing the fluid and filter and replacing 1-2 solenoid. That do you think. Thank you in advanced

You probably do not have 2nd at all, it is probably shifting 1-3. 4th is probably not quite right either. One way to tell is to put it in manual 2nd and see if it shifts under light throttle. Some people claim they can fix it with solenoids, but you should have problems in other gears if one is bad. I would be more inclined to say it is a servo or band problem. My money is on the band.

Good video. Hava an 2002 gmc 4.8L vortec. Seems like shifts from 1st to 3rd what could this be? All other gears shift fine

Thanks. Normally all I would say is there is a problem with either the valve body or the 2nd apply side of the servo. However I just read an article on this problem that could be a bad computer. One way to tell is to drive it holding the speed at around 20 mph and see if it will shift to 2nd that way. If it will it may be a grounding issue for shift solenoid A inside the computer. It's just taking a long time to ground and if you drive it normal it will go ahead and shift to 3rd. So the first thing I would do is go drive it like that and see if it goes to 2nd. If not I would still say what I did at first.

Awesome work! Working with a LS1 4L60E here. I have an erratic hard shift to drive and erratic 1-2 hard shift. I replaced the accumulator with a pinless version and the problem still remains. I plan on inspecting the check balls is that good suggestion or do you suggest differently?

Look at this valve. Also, the check ball towards the front of the valve body. It loves to beat its way through the plate. Buff the plate down and put a .311 ball in replacing the .250 one.

Got a 1996 GMC Jimmy with 4l60e. When you start it up first thing in the morning, all gears work fine except reverse. It won't engage reverse until the truck reaches operating temperature, about 5 to 10 minutes. Then reverse is fine and all gears shift perfectly all day until the next morning when the same thing happens all over again. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks. Really like your channel.

I have a 4l60e that started out as just a hard 1-2 after a rebuild, then went to a late 1-2 shift then it went to all that plus no wide open shifts. Could it be this valve stuck? Ive messed with going from the superior servo back to a vette servo, then replaced both shift solenoids, looked at second accumulator, and even double checked pressure with a tester. Now with the vette servo in it it slips 1-2, this valve is the last thing left.

It is possible, check all the valves. This valve is just the one that sticks the most. Sounds like the band might be burnt already.

Hey Tom I got a 2000 4l60 in a 4cyl s10 pickup. About a year ago 1st gear started slipping, kept driving now 1st gear is gone. No movement whatsoever. Reverse works fine and holds strong. All other gears work. Fluid level is fine, the only problem I can detect in the valve body was the accumulator had only one spring, when my service data shows 2. Im not sure if that was part of a rebuild/update, as it worked just like that for 40k miles. No codes. Just looking at the on/off values for the shift solenoids, they appear to be working. Any tips? Am I correct in thinking 1st and reverse are the same clutch?

The forward accumulator never had 2 springs. The 1-2 accumulator started with 1large spring. Then got flipped over and had inner and outer springs. Then went to one small inner spring. First gear shares a low/reverse clutch, but uses the forward clutch in the input drum also to achieve forward. That is probably where your problem is.

When you say high stalling are you meaning it is revving high before it shifts to second? Are there any codes in the system?

I have a 03 avalanche. 1st gear revs out. I have to let off to get it to shift. 2nd gear is like neutral.. I can get shifts from 1 to 3 and it goes into OD. The only problem seems to be with 2nd gear. What might cause this?

Well since you have reverse and 4th that only leaves a few areas. 2nd gear side of the servo, valve body or computer. Computer would be a rare instance.

I have this same issue in my 2002 GMC Yukon XL. Revs out in 1st, shifts into 3rd when you left off the throttle. Will do this with Stability Mode off. With Stability Mode on, it tries to shift to second and it is like there is no pressure behind it. The truck thinks it is on ice and cuts power. Goes into lockup and 4th no problem. Reverse is solid - no issues. Seems to be 2nd gear only. Was thinking it was a stuck valve on the valve body as it sometimes will hold 2nd for a bit when the transmission is cold. Just put a cleaner in the transmission tonight to see if it makes a difference. So far, nothing.

i have a 4l60e 1995 works great and shifts are quick and normal. Problem is that 1-2 and 3-4 shifts are delayed RMP wise but dont bang in. Still shifts smooth. Any ideas. Has all pinless pistons

Sounds like it is doing what it is commanded to do. Especially if there are no codes. You will need to watch things on the scanner that have to do with engine load. MAP, MAF, TPS, VSS

Hello- What would the symptoms of a problematic 1-2 accumulator shift valve include? I'm struggling with a slide-bump 1-2 shift, when all other upshifts shifts seem to be fine. (downshift wise, 3-2 seems like it could be soft but i'm not sure how soft it is supposed to be). 1-2 accumulator itself seems to be ok- i see some wear marks in the bore, but nowhere near scratches i can feel with a fingernail. The wear marks make it appear the piston strokes the full length of the cylinder. When i compress the spring/piston assembly and cover the hydraulic connection, the piston stays in the same place / air doesn't appear to leak in quickly. The springs are green/green, which align with the GM parts diagram for this application (2003 chevy astro awd). It appears from the hydraulic diagram that the 1-2 accumulator shift valve also provides accumulator pressure for the 3-4 accumulator, is that correct? I haven't notices any 3-4 shift issues, but maybe i haven't noticed soft 3/4 shift because i'm rarely at full throttle 3-4? From what i've read, it seems like i'm getting accumulator pressure bleed-off, or low accumulator pressure, allowing the piston to stroke too quickly and hit the end of travel causing the bump. Low accumulator pressure could be from low line pressure, low torque signal pressure Low line pressure could be a number of sources, but i think would cause other noticeable driveability issues Low torque signal pressure could be bad throttle position sensor, or problem with the pressure control solenoid. However all other shifts appear to work well, and the pressure control solenoid feeds the boost valve, so i don't think it is that. And otherwise the car seems to drive fine, so i don't think it is the throttle position sensor. I have not checked line pressure.... and now the transmission is out of the vehicle :-/ . Thoughts? What am i missing/ what did i get wrong here? Many thanks!!

Need to check your line pressure. But since you have it on the bench, checking that valve is easy enough. It will be obvious when it is sticking. Depends on which way it is stuck, but yeah that could be one of the symptoms. Check the second apply of the servo also. Once you get it in the vehicle and check line pressure. One other thing that is very common on these units is a bad MAF. Usually don't throw any codes. They just send bad signals and line pressure is affected. It is very easy to check if you have a scanner capable of data. I have a video on it. Volumetric efficiency check. Thank you! I did replace the maf, but first with a aftermarket (which caused intermittent stalling and flooding), then with an oem reman. Will do the test you refer to . What should I be looking for on teardown of the servo aside from tight center pin fittment and smooth/unscored cylinder walls? There are a couple RU-vid videos... The poster seems to infer that just new ring seals aren't enough if the pistons are worn. Is there a way to donate to you? Thanks again...

@@camdenlindsay9272 The only thing you will be able to look at is the sealing rings. I would be air checking the circuit. What kind of vehicle are we talking about? I have a 4l60E that has reverse but it seem like it has no detent lever from park to 2nd but once it is in second my scanner says it's in 4th gear. I was wondering if that could be a stuck valve in the valve body or a broken or stripped detent but that wouldn't explain the looseness of the detent not having the feel of each gear placement in the shifter handle. Have you ever heard of anything like this? Would the pillow switch be the problem sending bad info back to the ecm on this 1998 k1500

Sounds like the detent on the valve body is loose or the cable is bad.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission It a brand new cable, so the detent is what i am thinking is the problem. I haven't seen any talk about the detent ever wearing out so it seem strange unless the nut has loosened off some how or the shaft has become oval. I guess i will have to do some exploratoral surgery.

Is this before a rebuild or after? If before, more than likely yhe 3-4 clutches are burned. the band may be also. Several things that can cause them to burn but the 2 main ones are a bad drum and a bad MAF sensor. Most of the time you need to get the drum hot to tell if it is bad. The shaft will get loose when hot. I know people that take them out and put green loctite on the splines and press the shaft back in. I just replace it when the shaft comes loose. I have an 06 4l65e that seems to have 1st and 2nd but slips around the time it should shift to 3rd but will make the shift if I lift off the accelerator pedal and then I take it to 55mph and it seems like it will not shift to 4th. Do you have any ideas of what it could be?

3-4 clutches are probably burned up. Very common problem. When you get done with the repair you need to check the volumetric efficiency to help keep it from happening again. Very common problem also. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pg3l3yB4i9s.html

I have a 4L60e transplanted into my Corvette C3. I am running a manual shift setup MPS signals engage relays to activate the solenoids when commanded by shifter position. Problem is I have no first gear. Trans was a rebuild about 2 years ago they rolled the surburban it lived in shortly there after and it sat until I swapped it. MPS is closing and commanding both A&B to close for first but it just stays in 2nd. 4th is fine and both solenoids are good. When I found out I had no 1st I pulled the pan again and swapped the 1-2 accumulator housing and all, from another parts tranny that I had. My accumulator seems good, nice strong spray when you squeeze it. Fluid in this trans was as clean as I have ever seen in a transmission no clutch material or anything in the juice, only a very light coating on the magnets. Could this valve be just stuck from sitting?

First thing you are going to need to do is see if it is a command issue. Unplug the harness and energize both solenoids and see if you have first to determine if it is indeed inside the transmission or it is a controller issue. If it is inside the unit, see if the screens in the separator plate are restricted. Take them out of the plate and leave them out, throw them away.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission I know its not a command issue I spliced a couple LEDs in between the mps and the solenoids ran them up in my cab. A&B are both hitting like they are supposed to. I have to go in it again this week to replace a weak tcc solenoid I will pull both screens. I have another valve body as well I was thinking about swapping. To see if that did anything when I stumbled upon your video about the acumulator valve. Either way valve body is going to have to come out

Maybe the valve, those screens plugged, sticking shift valve or debris in the hole of the plate. Have seen the 3-2 downshift Solenoid cause some strange problems also. Usually it has a burned look to it on the plastic where the connector goes when it is causing problems.

@2128scapegoat did you ever figure out why you had no first gear? I just got a rebuild back in and have no 1st gear. Everything else works and it is commanding 1st gear.

I have a problem with the 2006 4l60... sometimes it won't shift from 1 to 2 it goes to neutral to temporarily fix this I need to come to a complete stop then place it in park then back then to drive then she is fine for.... awhile ...any ideals thanks

Just going to have to keep working with it. I'm sure you have tried it but, try blowing air in the passages until whatever it is comes loose.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission Wow thanks for the quick reply! I figured it out... The plug had dented and wouldn't come out the end of the case. Bit risky but I drilled a provision to get leverage on it and forced it out. Bore was undamaged thankfully in process. I discovered the dent / raised lip on the plug after I got it out.

I have a 1999 silverado 1500 with 5.3/4l60e combo,it stopped shifting into second gear so i took it in for a trans rebuild. I got the truck back from the shop,and it seemed to shift fine until a couple weeks later it had no second gear again.tool the truck back to the shop and the mechanic tells me that the transmission went bad again,and claims it is the tps fault… i payed for them to replace the tps but the code p0121 is still present…. Is this something common or even possible? Any input or help is highly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission The truck is currently back in the shop so i am not able to currently scan it ,but if i recall correctly i am only getting codes for the tps and knock sensor.the replacement tps was the recommended AC Delco

I remember something about that P0121 from a seminar. Went back through all my books but can not find it. The only thing I found about a repeated P0121 is the fuel tank module being bad but it is supposed to throw P1639 as well as P0121.

I already scan the truck and it does not present codes, I also read the tps graph and there are no jumps or errors, the speed sensor also works well, the truck had almost all the disc packs burned (the gears were slipping), discs were changed. clutch, steel discs, bushings, o-rings, gaskets, steel plate of the valve body, etc ... The only thing that remains original is the sunshield that had been changed recently, in the process I opened the pump, I do not know if some leakage is possible at the pump. Hey man, I have an 02 Yukon Denali with a 4l65e and it takes off in 3rd, but you can manual pull it down into 2nd. It's not showing any codes and I made sure that I was getting 12 volts to the pink wire (pin E) on the gray connector that plugs into the transmission. I had a 3-4 clutch pack go out in my original transmission, so I bought a rebuilt one and put it in and now it's doing that. The original transmission was acting fine. Do you think that it could be a stuck 1-2 shift valve in the rebuilt transmission? Thanks.

No it is not a stuck valve, it is in failsafe. There should be codes. Double check that the connector is plugged in all the way and make sure you have the right transmission. There is a tag on the transmission make sure it matches. If the tag is gone you can check the numbers on the pan rail on the passenger side. Try clearing codes anyways and see if it works.

@@samjohnson3376 It is possible you have a bad 3-2 solenoid. Also watch the scanner and see which gear the neutral switch is showing. When removing and installing the switch there is a burr that is on the linkage shaft if not removed will scrap the switch and cause it to not read properly.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission Just checked the codes on both of them. They are both 4l60-HDs. I already changed the 3-2 downshift solenoid, no luck. I hooked up the scanner and everything is reading correctly except if I manually pull it into third it says first is the commanded gear and solenoid a and b are on.

What are the symptoms of that valve being stuck? I had a 4l60e stuck in first. Replaced the valve body and now its working again. Is that what was wrong with the valve body possibly?

Possibly. Depends on how bad it was stuck. Flaring, late shift or no shift.

Huh. I must have another problem going on with it then. I was just out in the dunes off roading and it got stuck in first. No matter what I did it would not come out. Had reverse and first. Put in a different valve body and it was back to normal. Me being me I always wanted to know what caused it. Thanks for replaying back.

Easy enough to look in there and see if that valve is stuck or any of them for that matter. Did you have any codes stored in the system? Since replacing the valve body fixed it you know the problem is there unless you did a battery disconnect or reset the memory in the computer.

Unfortunately its my dune truck with a battery cut out so every time I park it the battery is disconnected. It broke in the dunes somehow and only was allowing me to use first and reverse and im embarrassed to admit it but I did a full rebuild of the trans with upgraded drum and servo as well as did a shift kit a reprogramming kit in the valve body. I put the trans back in the truck and it was still stuck in first. I just tore the valve body apart today to find the 1-2 shift valve was missing its spring. I must have forgot to put it back in as well as the part you are messing with in this video is installed upside down. Im going to correct both them issues and reinstall the valve body.

Im having problems with My 2002 s10 has a p0756 code when i start driving it feels like it's in second gear it shifts up fine but when i come to a stop an start again it feels like it's in second what can it be thanks

That code is for shift solenoid B. Could be the solenoid is bad, wiring or stuck valve. Usually a bad solenoid.

I changed the selenoide an it keeps doing the same thing i check the valve body an a valve was stuck got it free and it keeps getting stuck changed the valve body an transmisión went crazy it sometime went it to gear then it losses so i got tires of thats an bought another transmisión an know a i have a p0753 solenoide a an the new transmisión i put it un drive an starts in 2nd

4l60e shift 1st too 3rd missing 2nd And 4th gear smoking the band and low rev. Drum all replaced nshifted fine through all?gears atleast twice

I would check line pressure first. If you have a pressure gauge the tap is on the drivers side above the linkage. Pressure should be 53-85 at idle and rise immediately when you power brake it (stall test).

Have an 04 trailblazer 4.2L. After dropping pan and replacing with oem filter w/ 145k miles for the first time since buying it new. 1-2 shifts firm when cold and then smooth out in a few mins of driving which I guess when warmed up. But doesn’t shift 1-2 firm when very lightly giving gas. Only when you give normal gas at green light. Is this normal? Wasn’t doing that before.

You can create problems when changing fluid when it has not ever been changed and you have alot of miles on it. If you have access to a scanner try resetting the adaptives. If you don't, "sometimes" you can disconnect the battery overnight and it will reset the memory. Then drive it mormal, no agressiveness, for awhile and let it relearn the shifts.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission 1-2 shift normal in all temp range but now notice that 2-3 doesn’t flare when cold but then flares 2-300 rpm after warmed up. Took it to local trans shop and they did road test, reset adaptation pressure but said everything is normal. Did notice that 2-3 is a little soft. Any tips on looking for the right trans shop as there is so many in my area.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission I’m having the same issue. It has strong reverse and strong 1st gear but it will redline and not shift out of first. Even if you many select 2 or 3 it won’t shift out of first gear

@@CurmudgeonTransmission I’m having the same problem as well, I have a 2005 Chevy Tahoe and it only stays in first gear when driving, no matter how high the revs are. I have reverse and every other shift positions, just not 2,3,or 4th. There are no codes present that would point to any transmission problems only Abs control module (EBCM) is present as a code.

Since you have had neutral switch problems your problem may be there. GM sells a new connector for it. Any code in the system?

If the check engine light is on you can go to Autozone and they will scan it for free. If you get up to about 30mph and let off the gas, will it shift? If it does, it is shifting to 3rd and you more than likely have at least a broken band. Which is 2nd and 4th. How fast have you gone without it shifting? Even with a bad solenoid you should have at least one other gear. May be a bad TPS. There is a lot of things it could be. We need more information.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission I live to far from my local O’Reillys to get it there to scan it I’ll probably be able to scan it tomorrow. It didn’t break while driving it broke after I got home from work and I turned it off and when I started it up the next morning it wouldn’t shift at all except for reverse and 1st and no matter how fast you get it to nothing happens

If it is stuck in the stroked position it is easy to see. If not when you go to stroke it and it will not return all the way on it's own, because it is spring loaded, you will see it.

Depends on how stuck it is and which way it is stuck. Anywhere from flare shifts to taking off in 2nd or no 1-2.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission thanks for the reply man I been breaking my head with my 4l60e it's in limp mode and nothing's working replaced everything under the pan and nothing gotten code p0756 and that's it. Have 2 3 and R no lock up and have power to pin E. Any ideas.

@@hugonavarrete1664 Well limp mode is third gear only, no shifts. Does it throw the code as soon as you cycle the key or does it throw the code after the 2-3 shift? Look close at the 1-2 accumulator valve like in the video or the 2-3 shift valve. It's the one that has no spring behind the valve that is behind the shift solenoid. If you have access to TranX or similar device you can manually shift the transmission to see if it is capable of working, if it does then you have a bad computer. There are problems with the computer being bad and giving that code. If you have replaced the solenoids and the valves are free I would bet the computer is your problem.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission yes vehicle starts in 3rd and stays in third unless manually Put in 2nd. If I unplug the trans it makes no difference. None of the changes i made to the GB or solenoids made any difference what so ever. So yeah pcm is next I guess.. thanks again for the reply
