“Transmission to engine bolts: 35 ft/lb”
Once you have the transmission installed onto the engine you must verify that the torque converter
remained fully seated into the front pump during the transmission installation. You should observe 1/8”
(.125”) to 3/16” (.187”) of air gap between the torque converter mounting pads and flexplate before
sliding the converter forward to attach it to the flexplate. If you have 1/8” - 3/16” air gap then you may
proceed with sliding the torque converter forward and attaching it to the flexplate. If you have less than
1/8” air gap then you may not have the torque converter fully seated into the front pump. This will
require disassembly and verification of proper torque converter installation. If you have more than 3/16”
air gap then you may install high quality flat washers between the mounting pads and flexplate to shim
the converter to the correct air gap dimension of 1/8” - 3/16”. NEVER shim the converter to eliminate all
air gap. Running the torque converter in a fully shimmed condition WILL result in damage to the front
pump gear set, front pump stator body, torque converter pump hub, and may even cause damage to the
internal torque converter components as well as the crankshaft thrust bearing.

Great, informative video. I like your attention to safety and how you try to give as much info as possible. A couple things I found out the hard way: 1. If the old trans went out, you need to flush the oil cooler with brake cleaner and compressed air or it can fill your newly rebuilt transmission with junk. 2. Lube the back of the crank with grease before you stick the torque converter in there. This allows the converter to move forward and back as the flexplate flexes. 3. Put the exhaust above the crossmember but don’t attach it until you put the inside bolt on the driver’s side in the crossmember or the bolt will have to go in backwards from the rest. 4. If you installed a new converter too, when you bolt it to the flexplate, make sure there is less than 3/16” gap between them. If not, you will need washers to close the gap. 5. Depending on the year, the starter wires are too short to install until the starter is mounted. Your video on removing the hot glue connectors on the neutral safety switch saved me a huge headache! Keep up the great work!

Do you really trust flushing the lines will take care of your future problem? should you essentially replace lines, radiator,and trans-cooler?
@dudewecanfixit

Either trans lube or red wheel bearing grease
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit Год назад
My transmission didn't have a catastrophic failure, so I'm fine with flushing the lines. If it did have a catastrophic failure, I would install an auxiliary cooler and bypass the trans cooler in the radiator. I have a video on the auxiliary cooler install.

Just did a full rebuild on my 01 jimmy. It's a lot more in depth for a 1st timer but I truly enjoyed rebuilding the tranny, adding sonnax shift kit, parts of transgo shift kit, corvette servo and a sonnax sun shell which was my problem in the first case. Totally stripped out 😆. But I would like to thank you two on a job well done. Especially with the feeler gauges, tolerances, and the confidence to do this job. I would've been up shit creek if not for you 2. I had a dam check ball fall into the side of the transmission 😆 and I double checked to make sure the c clips on the pump valve were fully seated then it got away from me and into the transmission again 🤦 but shit, I didn't even mind digging it out lol. Now I know I can rebuild one of these things and next would be engine dismantling but that's for another time. Much respect from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦

Its almost like you made this series of videos just in time for me to have bought this truck with a bad 3/4 band. its a 2010 but im sure its all pretty much the same, i just hope i get the right kit and dont get pneumonia dropping the thing out in the driveway here in michigan this time of year lol. thanks for vids to follow along with. makes me feel confident that i can handle the rebuild myself.
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit 3 года назад
If you have some help, you should be able to remove the transmission in just a few hours. Then I hope you have a warm garage for the rebuild! Good luck, it's really not a difficult project, just take your time and enjoy the learning experience
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit 3 года назад
Also, I got my kit from transmissionbench.com. You could also use rockauto.com or summitracing.com. If you have a local transmission parts supplier, that might even be better

I was thinking about grabbing one of these guys www.ebay.com/itm/4L60E-4L65E-4L70E-04-up-Master-Rebuild-Kit-Transmission-Overhaul-4L60-E-4L75E/202644117744 I do have a workshop with some propane heaters to rebuild the tranny in. Just gonna have to shovel snow when I go to take it in and out lol. I’m just making sure I get a kit that has the pistons in it, cause I figure if it’s not that check ball in the housing it’s gotta be the pistons that caused the 3/4 to go bad. Originally I hoped it was just a solenoid so I dropped the pan twice trying to fix it but now when I drive it I can tell it hits 3rd but there’s just a lot of rpm before you get any sort of pull feel out of the pedal then it just drops back into 2 when it gets around 4k
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit 3 года назад
Sounds like you have it figured out. Sounds like the frictions and steels are toast. Definitely replace the pistons and verify the check ball doesn't leak. Also look into reaming out and replacing the AFL valve in the valve body. You should also replace the TCC valve, these wear out and 3-4 apply fluid pressure can be reduced increasing slippage and burnout of clutches. Sonnax and transgo make kits for these repairs.

It’s been a minute. But i don’t remember doing my torque converter bolts like that. I remember everything was done with the trans out and bolted to the flex plate. Then put the trans on. 😳
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit Год назад
Do you mean that you bolted the torque converter to the flex plate and then try to stab the transmission onto it? That sounds very difficult
@autumnwoe6356
@autumnwoe6356 3 месяца назад
You can get the top center bolt from the engine bay. Behind the back along the firewall. Where a distributor would have been located. Soooo much easier.

I've known people to fill up converter first with 6 to 7 quarts of oil first and then fill up with 5 quarts 2 while it's off and gradually add other 3 to prevent leaking from vent and more accurate measurement of the oil that is supposed to take.
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit 3 года назад
That's one way to do it. It does make the torque converter much heavier during install though

Pro tip i don"t pour all 12 quarts in , even if everythingbis empty , i pour 2 or 3 in the torque convertor then slode it all together , add 3 or 4 more , start it for 3 minutes or less , add 4 more , then check it to see how many more it wants , pouring all 12 at one time will have it running out the overfill every time .😂

When I pulled the Allison 1000 out from behind my LB7 in the street to replace the broken flexplate (with a SoCal diesel billet 1 piece), I just put the truck on 4 ramps to give me the height I needed to work under it. Driveshaft I just pulled out of the trans and bungeed off to the side out of the way instead of pulling the heavy ass 2 piece driveshaft out. Having the wheels off wouldn't have made it any easier for me, what would've made it easier is if the street were smooth so I could maneuver the trans jack around. Glad I don't live there anymore.
@dudewecanfixit
@dudewecanfixit 2 года назад
That sounds like quite the job. I once replaced a one ton rear end in a sandy parking lot in Albuquerque
@GrandPrix46
@GrandPrix46 2 года назад
@@dudewecanfixit only other issue besides the jack not rolling on the crappy street surface was the damn flexplate bolts that were installed by Zeus himself at the assembly plant, all 8 of them. I'm 6' 280 and had to use the handle from my floor jack as a cheater pipe to break them loose. Did you have somebody pulling security while swapping that rear end? I hear ABQ ain't the safest place in the world, lol.

When installing the bolts to the torque converter I noticed you had to rotate the flex plate which rotates the crankshaft. Will this mess with the engines timing? If so, what should be done before starting the vehicle? Thanks for a great video!

So I just finished installing my rebuilt transmission in my 2001 Yukon 5.3 RWD. Do I need to hook up a scan tool and reteach, or am I good to go? The one that I pulled seems to have been a factory build, and the one that I installed is a different one that I upgraded some of the parts, both being 4L60Es.

There is no relearn procedure. Just install it and make sure the fluid level is correct
