Removing the door panel on our 2000 WS6 and removing the staples that hold the window trim in. This alone can relieve partial cracks and can help to close a full crack.
Excellent how to video. I have several things to fix on the 95 Camaro I just picked up, glad to see a slow paced video, so I don't tear something up while repairng something else. Changing the power window motors are going to be a pain. Thanks again.
Great write up! After 19 years and only 17,000 miles, the driver side door panel has a tiny crack starting. I followed your instructions to remove staples and hopefully prevent it from getting worse.
I've had this video up for over a year and my cracks are still non-existent. I think this is the best way to do it based on my experience. Hopefully you have the same results!
Thank you for the walk thru video. Just got an 01 SLP Firehawk and well aware of this issue (along with the bubbling Sail apron!). Your video is spot on with the metal/plastic issue. Two things I can add: Try using a Dremel with a cutoff blade to get to the rear bent over staples, cut off each side and then you can pull from the top. Need to be careful but proved much easier as some of those staples were put in by Satan himself. I also did notice some pre-cracking where the cracks appear so the sooner the better!! The second was the one door hook, as stated, appears to have been broken off at the factory as mine too was missing the driver side hook near the speaker. Other then that, I can sleep better knowing I gave my door panels a chance now when it gets too hot or cold! THUMBS UP!
Glad you don't have cracks! This seems to be a pretty easy way to keep them that way. My panels still look better than the day I brought the car home 6 years ago, so I'd say this was a good solution :) thanks for the sub btw!
Thank you so much for this! Long story short my grandfather died (the only reliable man in my life) and his Camaro was felt to me. There's a couple things wrong and I've been asking my boyfriend and friends to help me for 5 months now and nobody has. I finally gave up and decided to try to figure it out myself and your video was VERY detailed and helpful for somebody clueless like me!
I'll be doing this soon. I have a 1997 camaro z28 with stock door panels but I've always wanted to do a firebird panel conversion which isn't a small mod since I had to find 2 firebird door panels in good shape, 2 firebird doors to yank the interior skeleton since firebirds have different mounting spots compared to Camaro's. I've also purchased repurposed switch panels and replacement switches. Don't know how hard the wiring will be for the power windows and mirrors.
Hello there I am missing a few plastic hooks on my 99 Bird door panel and it is not seating quite rite.Do you know if you can super glue a few plastic hooks on there? Really nice video. Brian
Nice video, I always wondered what the cause of the cracking was. I have a 2000 ws6 as well. Mine are already pretty badly cracked in two places on both panels. Probably wont mess with it unless I get new plastic for it though.
Not too much to tell honestly, it's a mostly stock car with 11,500 miles. Short stick on the factory hurst, it has a Volant intake currently, but will be getting an SLP lid with factory sticker to appear stock, SLP y-pipe and Corsa catback. I'm going to be getting a C5z in the future, so I'm hoping to use the LS6 intake, cam and 243's off of that, mixed with some Kooks headers to add into the WS6. I want to keep it mostly stock, but "build" it how I think GM should have built it. And then just enjoy it. C5z will likely be getting HCI/FBO and eventually LS7, or at least that's the goal. We'll see :D
Thank you for your video did you have to drill the small holes in the door panel for the zip ties? Or were they already there? Great Ws6 I had that exact car a few years back.
I see you just did this in April. My question is have you used this method before on any other Firebird's or Camaro's? I'm wondering if the ties will tend to break off over time? This has been a problem when I used them on wiring outside my house. It could be the UV from sunlight weakening them over time. I like this idea because it's MUCH easier than oval holes and nuts and bolts. Also an idea as back up. Maybe leave two staples in, the first one up near the side view mirror and one mid way not where the panel is notched out which is where the cracks form. Thoughts?
I haven't used this method before, but I have seen others use it and it hasn't been an issue. I think the idea is exactly what you said, the zipties being out of the sunlight should help them to last a really long time. Also, putting the zipties in is probably the easiest part, so in my mind if I have to do it again in 5-10 years, it really wouldn't be a big deal as the hardest part is getting those dang staples out. I think you could leave a couple of the staples in, but I think you would also want to put something in each hole still to secure the piece to the door panel. If you don't it will lift in spots and just not look right.
Do I have to remove the panel to get to my speakers? Not really trying to do that but if that’s the only way, I’ll give it a shot. I had my window motor replaced but I don’t hear anything on my driver side.
@@RamblinGarage forgot to tell you I ended up taking off the whole panel and solved the problem. Thanks man. I was also able to slide it back in with no struggle.
I already responded on FB.. but for consistencies sake haha .. I've seen people do that and people leave it alone, both seem to have good results once the trim piece isn't pushing and pulling on the door panel. I suppose time will tell either way :)
What part are you having trouble with? Not to come off the wrong way, but I thought it was quite a bit easier than the normal push pin panels so I didn't feel it needed as much explaining, but I might still be able to help.
Thanx for responding, i am having trouble with the handle, orange lock bezel. I put that piece on with the orange that slides, to lock and unlock. It seems it doesn't reach when I try And put the rest of the bezel, and I cracked it, the plastic., point I was referring to was 12:05. But thanx for responding, I guess I need to find that bezel now.😬
@@Serenity13472 the orange lock thing was a real pain, I just lined that up and literally just pushed it with my palm straight towards the door. That was by far the most frustrating part for me, but I don't know that I'd really be able to show how I did that on video honestly.
@@RamblinGarage ok and did you have to drill the piece of were the staples were removed and the door panel too to put the zip ties? So each staple has 2 holes can I just drill one hole?
@@naranjoceidy I didn't have a crack to begin with, but mine has not gotten worse. Zipties still holding in fine for me now, going in on year 3 I believe.
I have a problem with your video, " I would like for you in your future video's explain too your viewers while you actually performing the act, not after!
It can be hard to explain things while learning and doing them at the same time. A lot of the videos I make I am learning while I go and sharing what I learn.
