If those rounds are Russian commercial manufacture then they have no steel in the core. The magnet is sticking to the mild steel jackets.

@@sampleentry5253 A lot of indoor ranges won't allow any amount of steel in the bullet because of the risk of sparks igniting unburned powder floating around in the air. I'm not sure how big that risk is, but that's what I've heard.

@@squarewave808 A lot of ranges make you agree to leave your brass. In that case, they simply don't want your steel cases. The guns store I visit has Precision Cartridge Company reloads on their shelves. They send their range brass their and get a deal on the reloads and probably the PCC new brass rounds as well. It is possible to reload steel cases, but I think it takes extra steps and I imagine can't be done as many times. I don't know about that part.

If you had real 7N6, you had a mild steel core. The 7,62x39 was commercial and does not have a steel core. It has a bimetallic jacket. If you want 7.62x39 with a steel core, you need to find some of the old norinco ammunition. There was also a small batch of Russian M43 that sneaked in and maybe so old East German stuff that had steel core. Other than that, everything else isn’t steel core.

Bro if it’s magnetic then it’s got steel in it… copper isn’t magnetic, lead isn’t magnetic, brass isn’t maganetic…. You see where this is going right?? And a year Mayer you should have BEEN learned how metal’s work and what makes them magnetic or not. You think using certain words like “ferrous” that it automatically makes it proof that you know what you talking about. Now the level of the steel density is a whole other topic. But steel core is steel core and don’t matter if it’s Mike steel or hardened steel. It ALL still penetrates much better than any jacketed lead bullets.

I would choose 7.62x39 over 5.45x39 (and 5.56) for 1 simple reason: Combatants rarely stand in the open away from cover. 7.62x39 will carry an ass load of energy THROUGH a barrier better than the lighter, faster bullets thanks to its bullet mass. Sure, you can mitigate SOME of that with bullet construction being partially mild steel (M855 for example) but its not really that great a substitute for mass retention. Now, lets talk about their effective ranges. Most engagements are within 300 meters or so, which both rounds can effectively reach. If you really expect to engage targets outside 400-500 meters or more, perhaps you should consider a heavy hitter rifle in 7.62x51 or 7.62x54r. There's a reason the army and marines dusted off their old stocks of M14s to make DMRs.

@loves2shoot Год назад
This is my understanding as well. I shot a 3 gun competition many years ago where there was a magnet check on competitors ammunition. Anything that sticks was banned. There were always complaints from the fellows using "cheap russian" ammo ... And their claim was the iron was powdered. Regardless, the concern was penetrating or even dimpling the range steel (which was AR500 of course) and they eventually showed that their rounds did NOT dimple the steel. So, your second trip to the range did not surprise me at all. And finding out that they ALL had projectiles that stuck to magnets wasn't surprising either :) Doesn't matter, steel love your vids bwahahahah

As many others have said those rounds don’t have a steel core they have a bimetal jacket. That’s why a lot of indoor and even some outdoor ranges don’t allow steel cased and other russin ammos. The jacket being harder can cause sparks which could result in a fire. That’s also why steel cased ammo will wear out a barrel faster. I think it was military arms channel that just did a video how they set their range on fire shooting steel cased ammo. that being said it would be interesting to see a round of wolf .223 up against a fmj .223 round as i have heard alot that the bi metal jacket will get slightly better penetration. Maybe pull some bullets from some wolf .223 and load up some spicy boy 5.56 loads and see how it compares to m193. Edit: about your chrono, i saw a guy using the same one and he had a bungee cord wrapped around it holding it on to a supressor to get it far enough out. I already lost this debate back in 2008 mr. Bananas please let me tell you that the 7.62 ammo is not steel core. Hard to believe because of how that magnet jumps at those rounds but trust me. Instead of a steel core it is a steel jacket that has been copper plated. This is done to further reduce the cost to produce the ammo and has little to zero bearing on accuracy, penetration, or from what I can see barrel longevity. I guess you will have to use a file to cut one down to show your audience. Cheers from Texas. and keep of the great work we love your channel.

Yes, all steel cased AK ammo uses steel jacketed bullets. Years ago, I found with 9mm ammo, raising the velocity does improve penetration.,

Steel jacket with copper wash not steel core, try pulling some bullets and cutting them with hacksaw. Since I'm in Canada we have lots of "real" surplus ammo with actual steel core. Correct me if I'm wrong but the US banned Chinese ammo imports a long time ago. I have at least 4 different varieties of true steel core com-bloc 7.62x39, most ranges won't let us use it due to ricochet and fire hazard from possible sparks on steel targets or rocks.

I have a 5.45 that I pulled and ground down to expose the core. Red army standard import ammo, it has a copper jacket over a sintered metal core, with a air pocket at the very tip.

@@MrFlathead45 This matches my understanding. Not sure how much it matters, bottom line is poor penetration of hard targets. My guess ... powdered iron/steel core makes the rounds less expensive to make?\

@@MrFlathead45 We don't have much 5.45 up here as AK platform was banned back in 1991. 7.62x39 is everywhere due to the millions of SKS rifles in country....Which are soon to be banned as well. Just gotta love the currant political leaders both sides of the border.

You should have used Chinese Norinco manufactured copper wash 762 x39 it does have a steel penetrator

Wouldn’t that be a steel or a bimetal jacket, and not steel core? At least that’s what my Russian ammo is like.

How about m855a1 out of a 20 inch barrel AR 🧐 or any 5.56 out of 20 inch

You should try the 220 swift and see how much steel it'll go through.. I heard it'll go through 1/2 inch steel

With the right ammunition the 7.62x39 can cut thru 3/4 inch of steel.

7,62 is older than the AK, so it wasn't designed to shoot from AK.

If you have an old microwave that you need to throw away, take it apart and remove the magnets, they are big and powerful. Mount them on the jig to hold the plate in place. Be careful not to touch a certain part in there because it has high voltage even turned off. It's very easy to remove the magnets.
