Well I wish that it was going to be just a coil pack but who am I kidding? It’s 2020! The Dodge HEMI 5.7 valve lifters and the camshaft seem to be failing all over the place. Just look at RU-vid. Chrysler must know about this. I can’t imagine what it would cost to recall the lifters in all the cars and trucks out there. It really is too bad that there are a lot of people out there, myself included, that are going out and buying vehicles that have just a slight tick in the engine. In my opinion that slight tick is the beginning of an expensive repair. I love getting my hands dirty fixing things. I love the challenge of figuring things out. I also love the fact that there are so many great RU-vidrs out there that we can rely on to help us out when we get stuck! I know that I made a lot of references to RU-vid while working on this project! I wish you the best of luck in all your projects and thanks for watching!

Not a fanboy here but i love MOPAR, I own a 6.4L 300 SRT '13 and a '15 Ram 5.7L. Both still running smooth and if something bad showed up one day i think it's just part of the game for me to fix and keep on going. Keep it up bro, love your work.

When I purchased my truck....I also purchased the lifetime warranty from another dealer at a good discount. Was mainly concerned about all the fancy gadgets these generation of trucks now have including the electronics and air suspension system. You showed me why it was a good choice. I am a mechanically inclined person.....but that job is bonkers deep.

Good call on the extended warranty! It was certainly challenging but if you’re mechanically inclined I bet that you can handle it. I am a carpenter by trade so this was slightly outside of my skill set But it was a welcome change of scenery.

How do you purchase warranty at another dealer?
@bradrichaud6533
@bradrichaud6533 2 года назад
A word of advice. Read that warranty word for word. Especially when it comes to oil changes. A lot of them are based on where you live and whether or not you change your oil frequently enough. Some require you to change oil as if it was extreme duty or like taxi cabs and police vehicles and you will have to show proof of that. Every 5000km or 3000miles is not often enough. When you get into the fine print certain parts are not covered under the full warranty of the drive line as was my full coverage extended warranty which specifically mention camshaft and lifter replacement. Hope yours was a better warranty than mine.

I have a 2003 Ram 2500. Bought it 2 years ago from the original owner with 104k and it now has 128k. I always use Mobil 1 full synthetic with Mobil 1 filter and i change the oil every 3500 - 4000 miles. i havent experienced any issues and the truck runs quiet and strong. One thing that I've found is that you need to check the oil level between changes! For some reason it will use 1 to 1-1/2 quarts between service intervals. I also owned a 2005 Durango that had 40k when I bought it and 100k when i sold it. Same issue, had to keep an eye on the oil level. Both of these Hemis ran fantastic, and I always do my own work because I don't trust dealerships after hearing so many horror stories. The Hemi is a great engine for the most part, but it still amazes me that the old 318 small blocks and slant sixes could go hundreds of thousands of miles with such little maintenance and take incredible abuse with little fuss. I guess newer isnt always better.

I have an 07 Aspen 5.7 I rebuilt it @120k looking for this issue but was shocked at the excellent condition of the hard parts. I’ve watched tons of videos and read a whole lot of posts from Hemi owners and it seems to present itself in the 08 and up. Mine is non vvt and can’t believe how easy it is to rebuild. Simple. I did it in a weekend. Either way I love this engine. I’ll do another rebuild at 250k. I think that they changed vendors or something for the lifters.

That’s wonderful to hear that you’ve had no problems with yours! I tend to agree with what you have found in your research. 08 and up. Sounds great, a weekend rebuild! I wish I could do it that fast. I have also been told that they have a new vendor for the lifters by my contact at the dealership. I hope that fixes the problem because I don’t need to rebuild this engine every 130 thousand miles. Thanks for Sharing what you have learned through research rather than stating your opinions as fact! It is very much appreciated! I wish you many more smooth miles. ✌️

I had a noticeable misfire, tick, and loss of power. also when I would give it the beans there would be a noticeable delay before the truck started hauling. I also had a misfire code on cylinder 1. I swapped spark plugs, coil pack, and injector with another cylinder to see if the code would move but it stayed on cylinder 1 which told me i needed to rip it apart and swap cam and lifters. I ended up buying a MDS delete kit with everything i needed including gaskets, head studs, exhaust manifold gaskets, cam, lifters, etc and it included the MDS plugs and a Diablo tuner from AMS racing for about $1,100 and i have no complaints whatsoever about it@@alejolar90

I'm a retired master and i own a Magnum R/T with 220,000 miles on it. I have the lifter tick starting but it hasn't evolved into a misfire yet. Ever since I bought it when it had 200,000, I installed the Prolong engine treatment and raised the base idle with a Diablo tuner. I really believe that these engines when driven on the highway, don't have this issue. I swear by Prolong but it's just a question of how much time it gives me before I have to attend this party too lol.
@alejolar90
@alejolar90 6 месяцев назад
Whatever you do, don't idle for too long too often. I've done my research and that's what the problem with the Hemi is. Crankshaft doesn't throw enough oil onto the camshaft and lifter when idling, which in turn cause the knocking over time. Like you said, it doesn't happen when driving because the crankshaft at higher RPMs lubricates the cam and lifters. Edit: I just re-read your comment, what is that you say about Raising the base idle? I'm not too mechanically inclined but like asking questions lol

Great video, today's modern oil lacks ppm content of ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphates) and MOS2 (molybdenum disulfide),two major anti wear additives in lubricants have been reduced over the years to a bare minimum results are obvious especially in engines with more HP AND TORQUE that REQUIRES 0W-20 or 5-20 motor oil. Fortunately issue is easily solvable with just adding small amounts of ZDDP additive and mos2 friction reducer readily available online and in stores. If you would like to go next level with your additive package CERA TEC is ceramic solid lubricant (hexagonal boron nitride) long therm effect up to 30.000 miles, Additives that i have mentioned are in my personal vehicles since new they required cycles up to ten days of driving to get full effect its called chemical engineering

Nice I have a 2013 5.7L Jeep and I have been adding that additive since new. Just changed my oil pan at 135k miles and it looks good! And the parts of the cam I could see looked nice. Exact same issue at 135K miles - PO304 code - the exhaust rocker was seized - lobes were shot. Had to replace the entire top end (cam, lobes, lifters etc). Root cause is apparently oiling up top end takes too long after cold start up. Using 20/5 synthetic is recommended. BTW Ford & GM have similar issues especially on their diesels.

Has anyone ever heard of a lifter tapping loudly and then two days later it isn't tapping? I don't think the engine restore treatment had anything to do with it because i had just poured it in a minute before starting . What the heck is going on with my engine? It was a lifter tapping. I know it was and now it isn't tapping. I'm not complaining but i am confused now. I have owned about every musclecar ever made in my 71 years. I have a 2012 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi with 119,995 miles that now has a Cyl 5 Misfire code. After replacing the plugs, boots and coil pack the light has come back on. It does have a slight tick but after clearing the code the light had stayed out after replacing the plugs and boots. Until we were towing the racecar home in the rain and it started to buck. We pulled over shut off the engine and waited. It drove okay the rest of the way home. We replaced the coil. The light was out while idling at home. Took it for a test drive and now it's back on. So I believe we are looking at the same repair. My Question is this: the dealer is saying that if the metal shavings have reached the oil control valve that we will be chasing metal forever and should just install a remanufactured engine. That's a $4500 job. I'm kind of afraid to tear it down to see and am not sure I want to replace the cam and lifters if I'm going to have to keep chasing more issues caused from metal from the first failure. That's a lot of tear down to confirm the amount of damage. Also, I have no way to haul the racecar to my last race this weekend. I'm bummed!

Check out Uncle Tony's Garage video on the Gen 3 hemi cam failures explained. Lack of lubrication at low rpms because of the distance between the cam and the crankshaft, as well as the shallow lifter angle and positioning of the lifters means all the oil at the top of the motor goes straight to the oil pan, not the cam.. Don't let it idle around. I have a 2012 ram with 105k on it, waiting for it to chuck a cam. After seeing the video, for sure won't be using the remote start feature ever again.

Do you have the numbers for failed Hemi engines to the engines that have no problems? There seems to be an awful lot of Ram trucks on the road and these trucks seem very popular.
@fieromike1
@fieromike1 3 года назад
I have been finding it incredibly hard to get an accurate number. There are a lot of people on many forms and other social media talking about this. The problem isn’t with just the ram trucks. It’s also in the jeeps and dodge vehicles. In my opinion it goes a lot further than just lack of oil changes. This particular problem happens most often in the hemi engine. Hemi owners aren’t the only ones who are guilty of going too long without changing the oil. With all of that being said, you are right. There are an awful lot of these vehicles on the road. So with that in mind the failure rate is probably at an “acceptable level” as far as the manufacture is concerned.

Technically no you do not need to put the engine at top dead center so long as you mark the location of the camshaft and the driveshaft on the timing chain and reinstall all in the same position. Putting the engine in top dead center insures that it has been done properly because there are already marks on the chain and both shafts. I set the engine at top dead center before I removed the camshaft. If you haven’t already seen part two I do mention it briefly.

@fieromike1
@fieromike1 3 года назад
Not a problem. I wish I had filmed it. First make sure the cam is at top dead center. The key to doing this is to not lose tension on the bottom. Next you remove the chain tensioner. Then you remove the top bolt of the chain guid. (You can’t access the bottom bolt because it’s behind the oil pump). DON’T LOSE TENSION ON THE BOTTOM GEAR HERE. move the guid to the side a bit now. You should have enough room to get it off the top gear now. Don’t know if you saw it but In part two I showed a little of the reassembling. 3:12 to 4:00. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bJfiMEN4xF8.html Good luck with it. I got all the parts that I used from the dealership because I wanted to ensure that I was getting what was intended for the truck. I was also told by them that they are now using a “new vender”for the lifters. I hope that it makes a difference. It cost about $1800. I’m sure I could have got them cheaper but I was willing to pay for the peace of mind that I was getting the rite parts. Two new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, timing chain cover gasket, water pump gasket, camshaft, lifters, and I ended up needing to replace one ever so slightly bend lifter rod ($4). The rod that was bent was unsurprisingly from the same lifter that went bad. One other thing you may end up needing to get would be exhaust manifold gaskets and new exhaust manifold bolts. I did my best to keep them attached to the heads when I removed them. The bolts that hold on the exhaust manifolds are quite often already snapped. That is why most people who have a HEMI Hear the “HEMI Tick” until the engine warms up and expands the exhaust manifold enough to seal the leak.

Yes you can. Passenger side comes off easier than the driver side. There are a few bolts through the timing cover into the driver side head that make it a bit difficult. Also the timing cover is also the bracket that holds the alternator so you will need to lift that head up and over that section of it not impossible, but very difficult especially if you’re going to keep the exhaust manifolds attached.

@ShootnTexasStyle
@ShootnTexasStyle 3 года назад
What yr is this truck. I just watched another video of a tech guy explaining the flaw in the hemi. The lifters are starved of oil at low idle due to the can shaft being blocked by a internal tube that runs through the block effectively blocking oil from splashing on the cam/lifters. He was looking at a gen3 hemi. My 03 has 249k and so far no issues. But this problem is a hit and miss with hemis. I'm looking at a newer one but this issue scares me even issues with the ecodiesel and 6.4 hemis.

It is a 2011. Apparently it’s less than 5% of the vehicles that have this problem. Definitely is hit or miss. I’ve seen the video you’re talking about. I would have to agree with him. I like the idea of having some type of dribbler added to the top of the camshaft. I would love to see an engineers take on this whole situation. It’s too bad because I love the truck! @@fieromike1 yea. I want a 19 or newer and can't decide in the ecodiesel or 6.4 hemi. The diesel will be a daily driver and it's said that it doesn't do good for that. Cummins is too much. I had a few magnets in the oil pan already and I flushed the oil about three times before starting up. Given the condition of my camshaft, there wasn’t a lot anyway. It does have four-wheel-drive, but that really wasn’t the reason. I was trying to avoid having to take the oil pump off.

That is the problem on those lobes of the camshaft there's no oil is what the MDS system does it shuts off oil delivery to the lifters to make it a 4 cylinder to get better fuel economi so they either get stuck all the way down or up and in turn smashed the heck of smash the lobes so if you can delete the MDS system that should take care of your oiling problem The following is a linc for an mds delete kit

I have to ask please, i noticed you never took the vvt solenoid out right inder the intake , to see if any metal shavings were on it ? Mopar says if there are, you need a new engine! I also have. 2011 5.7 hemi and same job is needeed, im worried about metal shavings! So did you just not worry about that ? Or did you check and see ? Should I worry ? Or just do the job ! Thanks ! Mine has 148k misfire cylinder 3! Thanks again and great work !
@fieromike1
@fieromike1 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I did off camera. There weren’t many shavings on it. Under the advice of my mechanic, he said to look at the camshaft first to determine the amount of filings that may be in the engine. Since mine only turned out to be One Lobe we determined that it wouldn’t even be necessary to drop the oil pan or change the oil pump. The truck has 205,000 miles on it now and knock on wood is still running fine.

Yes it was showing a misfire on cylinder 4. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iTRYTFe1P84.html In every other car I have owned that was simply a matter of changing a coil pack. If you have a tick there’s a very good chance that it could be the exhaust manifold. Does the tick go away or get quieter after the vehicle warms up? Either way, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have somebody check it out. If it is the camshaft it’s not something you want to let go for too long. Good luck with it, let me know how it turns out. @fieromike1 11 месяцев назад
First, I swapped out the coil packs to eliminate the possibility. Then I swapped out, spark plugs. Then I swapped out fuel injectors. At that point if you’re still getting a misfire on the same cylinder it’s pretty certain that it’s a lifter or the camshaft. If the lifter goes bad, it usually wipes out the camshaft.
