5.7K Canon EOS 5D Mark III RAW Video | Full Width Anamorphic Mode | Oberdorla

This is the first test video with my new old Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I am blown away by Danne's video modes, especially this 5.7K anamorphic mode which uses the full sensor width. This makes the footage look very cinematic!
With this mode I got 1920x2332(*) (unsqueezed to 5760x2332) @ 23.976fps and 12bit lossless. And the best: continuous recording!!! This is possible because of the latest SD overclocking and card spanning features. So the CF card writes about 70MB/s and the SD about 50MB/s at the same time.
MLVApp is able to merge the two files (MLV+M00) from the two cards. The entire video was processed and color corrected to ProRes4444 with MLVApp only at original resolution. The final cut was upscaled to 8K for youtube using ffmpeg.

The first time learnt about Magic Lantern and the quality Canon cameras produce with it, I almost could not believe. Your videos are amazing. I always have a feeling that your videos need a script, some actors and some video production polish and from a visual perspective it will be a world class movie.

This footage is stellar, but I fail to see where the anamorphic part is coming from with this lens? Are you adding an extra lens to squeeze the image. I really love this. Well done.

Thank you. It is no optical anamorphic footage. It is digital anamorphic - that means for one column the cam records 3 lines. You get a squeezed image. The workflow is identical to optical anamorphic footage.

The problem In my mind is I can't see how the original footage looks like as I go about the problem with a lens that needs desqueezing - whereas this lens doesn't. So I don't understand how it isn't adjusting the aspect ratio? Does that make sense? Ok, so, now I have just watched your MLV tutorial. I have heard of magic lantern but never this MLV software. It's certainly an eye opener. It just makes one think if you can results like this why stick a heavy 1dx III on a glide cam. Can I ask two final questions? Does this thing go beyond 19/9 and into scope (I never remember that aspect ratio) and would you trust it to record long form interviews? Thank you thank you! (Thank you!)

@@nicklaytonUK The lens doesn't squeeze the image here - it is the sensor readout mode, which is 1x3 (instead of 1x1). That means you get a picture which is squeezed vertically by the factor 3. So finally the post desqueeze procedure is the same as for "real"(optically) anamorphic footage, just the resize factor is different. This is RAW: i.ibb.co/28cYB4m/Bildschirmfoto-2021-12-31-um-11-01-50.png This is Graded/Stretched: i.ibb.co/ZfRXnqb/Bildschirmfoto-2021-12-31-um-11-01-36.png You can have any AR - it is just the question how much you crop. For long interviews you'll get a problem with memory: 1sec is ~100MB in this mode. 64GB is enough for ~10min.

Thank you. I used the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM, full open for all clips. The fire was 1/48s, ~ISO1600 (if I remember right - it is a while ago).

Thank you. Yes, there is a b/w liveview while recording in this mode. For EOS 5D3 continuos AF does not exist. You always have to focus manually while recording.

One more question (sorry if it's dumb), what version of ML where you starting from, 1.2.3 or 1.1.3? Or it doesn't matter? One last question, what was the longest shot you tried? 5 minutes? Thank you! Correct, just overwrite the files. Take care to clean the settings folder. I use 1.1.3. This is recommended for most users to get more CPU power, while 1.2.3 is more compatible with HDMI. Can't remember the longest clip - as long as I recorded, it was continuous. So I think 15min should be possible with my 64GB CF card + 128GB SD.

Thank you. Start to read about magic lantern, search for Danne's 5D3 build. Find it in magic lantern forum - there is a lot to read, but it is useful for a good understanding. I used Danne's so called "anamorphic mode". Then I used MLVApp to process the RAW footage. There is also a short tutorial on my channel, which shows all the settings I used.

Congratulations! Configuring is so easy, no tutorial needed, really! Insert the 2 cards, start cam, select 5K anamorphic preset, select 12bit, enable card spanning, enable SD overclocking, restart cam, record.

this shots looks more cinematic and better than the shots producet by the new eos r5 and sony a7siii...this is why Sam Kolder's year 2015 and Hawaii video look outstanding at the time which are released 2016...14 bit raw with full frame and canon color science and all that in a small body...i mean come on!?! Really? Most people videographers/cinematographers do not know this information..

Thanks for the flowers. I don't think those are bad cameras. But who really needs 8K? 5.7K is nice, because you get a bit more than 4K - nice for some post correction without visible loss. In the end I am extremely satisfied with this nice camera and can absolutely recommend it!

Hi Ma Sc, I've been continuing to experiment with my 5D and, while I can get it to record some sequences in 5K RAW, it can be quite a challenge to get usable footage in camera. Can you maybe speak to overcoming some of the technical hurdles with the system, enough to perhaps shoot a short film with the 5D? Perhaps an external display might help with following focus etc? Can the camera display focus peaking during recording?

Hi, so your problem is just focussing? Or something else? 5D3 has a very nice "focus aid" setting which zooms into the frame by 10x when preparing a shot - here also AF works as it should. That makes focussing very easy. You also could teach 2 focus points and let the cam drive the focus motor between those two points while recording. External displays will lead to big problems, so I would not recommend to use any of those. Focus peaking also needs processor power, which doesn't exist anymore when driving 5.7K anamorphic or 4K 1x1. The "bad BW preview" is excellent for focussing: look where the moiree is - that's the focus ;) Sounds stupid, but for me that worked perfectly.

It looks so good...when I try to do 5.7k it looks so choppy. I left shutter at 1/96, and tried 5.7k, 4.8k and 3.8k, the higher the resolution the choppier it looks, if you have any tips please let me know.

Sounds like your computer is too slow to process RAW video in realtime (nothing unusual, because this is heavy processing). Export the clips as e.g. ProRes and watch in e.g. VLC. 1/96sec is a bit away from 180degree shutter rule. Better use 1/48sec for 24fps.

Thank you. Just the SD is overclocked, the CF isn't. Copy both files into the same path, then MLVApp opens the .M00 automatically if you open the .MLV

what spects of storage do i need for this kind of shots? I have some 100mb/s sd card and it stops filming within 4 seconds

You need a CF 1050x or faster and additionally a Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-I (95MB/s or 170MB/s) card. Both have to work in parallel using the card spanning feature. One single card is mostly not fast enough for continuous recording.

This mode needs maximum possible performance. Check if it is fast enough for you. If it stopps, it is too slow.

Thank you. It is a small town called Oberdorla in Thuringia, Germany. The 5D2 is a nice cam, but it is very limited to the standard 3x3 or 1x1 presets, 3x3 has always a little moiree. The new experimental presets with higher resolution were... very experimental. The 5D3 is completely moiree-free and has nice new presets, like this 5.7K full width preset, or the native 4K preset and it can record at higher framerate. After about 8 years with my 5D2 I found a nice offer for the Mark III, so I finally changed. But the 5D2 is in no way a bad cam!

I know I am late to the game and went through the comments but could not find an accurate answer, and I would appreciate if you could answer these: In 5.7k anam mode, the black and white preview, 1. does it show the full width and height? Black bars? 2. Does it show to be slow or it plays at 24fps on the screen or a bit delayed? 3. Zoom wise, you said we can still use the canon zoom x10 correct to get focus? 4. Do you think this would work with lidar autofocus? 5. Last, what about false colors, can we still get that in this mode? 6. And no chance this mode could work with any of the external monitors? 7. Wow... many questions... 1. It shows the area you record, in correct AR 2. It is no realtime preview. It is (much) slower and slightly delayed (preview is calculated in slow microcontroller and not in DSP) 3. Yes. Also with autofocus. 4. No idea about lidar. Never used it. If you find an answer, I'd like to know this too! ;) 5. In B/W definitively no. In shot preparation framing preview: maybe, but I expect it to be even slower. (Don't have my 5D here, sry.) 6. Nope. No chance. 7. I export in full resolution, so 5.7K. Because sometimes you need to crop a little or you use a stabilizer (warp) which also crops. So you have some resolution left for this. For some videos I even upscaled to 8K (here too) against youtube compression. MLVApp uses the awesome AVIR rescaler, which looks superior to bicubic and friends. Did you find my 5.7K settings video? @@MaSc I got a chance to test it and again, thank you, you helped me and lots of us to make continuous recording work. 2 things bug me, when it is recording, it shows yellow or orange, is it skipping frames? Or only when it shows red we have to worry? And in your experience, there is no way to record in full 16:9, it will always get black bars and get desqueezed to 2:35.1 ? Thank you!

@@studiorental Yellow/Orange is no problem. It just indicates you're close to the edge. Full 16:9 is possible in 1920x1080. In 5.7k 16:9 will crop on the right&left. Full sensor 5.7k anamorphic is way over the edge for the hardware atm... but who knows what will come in future ;-)

@@MaSc I did but de-squeezing is not working great for me, my files record at anamorphic 1920x2340, I de-squeeze them under "Transformation" at 5760x2340 and they look pretty bad, did try other ratios, this one produce acceptable image but not as great as a cropped one from cropped builds, I'm I missing something? sorry to use this as a forum, not accepted yet in the ML forum

@@jorgericardo1334 5760 is the correct width. Surely a crop clip is sharper, as it holds 3x the resolution in the same crop. Therefor the anamorphic setting covers the entire sensor width. This looks by far more cinematic and less like mobile-phone footage.

To record with this mode, you don't need one special card - you need two in parallel! I used a Lexar 1066x 32GB (my Komputerbay 1050x also works) and a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB 170MB/s. Then activate "card spanning". Now the 5D3 records in parallel on both cards - continuously in 5.7K anamorphic 12bit.

Hi i just ordered a 5d mark iii to try... i played with raw on my 600d several years ago. For cards what would you recommend in regard to spanning which i havent dealt with before. Can i have one large sd card and a few cf cards, or should i have pairs of cf and sd card of the same size, and when they are full then swap to a new pair? I have just one komputerbay 32GB cf already and then some larger sd cards. I hope this question makes sense. Thanks

Hi, congrats for you 5D3! Hope you like it! Most important for the cards: it must be the right (fast) type. So for the CF 1050x or 1066x is good. And for the SD, the recommended SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I works fine. Buy at a size you can afford. I use a 32GB Lexxar and 64GB Komputerbay CF, spanned with a 128GB SD. You change the CF a lot more than the SD. No problem. Just in post, you must download the MLVs from all the CF cards and the M00s from the one SD, all together into one folder on another drive. Then open in MLVApp, which auto merges the files.

This mode records anamorphic footage, which has to be unsqueezed. This means 1920x2340 are captured, unsquezzed to 5760x2340 in post. So height is natively recorded, while width is upscaled.

I mostly use the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II. There are many nice lenses out there: starting with a Kit lens or any 50mm is no bad choice.

I unsqueezed 1920x2332 to 5760x2332 (today the height is 2340 in this mode) in MLVApp. MLVApp does this automatically with default settings. I resized the final export file to 8K using ffmpeg, because otherwise youtube reduces to 4K. So 4K was never used in the workflow for this video.

@@minmaxfriends9575 The preset is called "anamorphic", then in RAW video submenu select Resolution 5760 and below activate card spanning. There is no DNG uncompressed in any ML build. You'll get lossless compressed MLV files.

Sry... what do you mean? 164GB, you mean 64GB? 170MB/s... you mean a SanDiskExtreme Pro SD card? Well... with just this card alone, you can't shoot in 5.7K mode at all. Way too slow with a 5D3. You need a fast CF card in parallel to the SanDisk SD card. If both cards are 64GB, you could record around 14min in 5.7K anamorphic.

I enabled SD overclock with a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/SEC SD card, but only .MLV files are being written to the Sandisk Extreme Pro 256 GB CF card. I'm interested in recording longer clips. This is a digitally anamorphic mode. The recorded footage must be handled similar to optically anamorphic footage. It is possible to combine this with anamorphic lenses, but then you have to double unsquezze - I don't expect good results.

It is the way the sensor is read: anamorphic modes read all lines but only one column of 3 binned (so all pixels are used to produce the image). So you get a 1x3 stretched frame, which needs the same workflow like an optical anamorphic image.

Hehe... MLVApp unsqueezes the anamorphic footage using AVIR rescaler and afterwards I upscaled the 5.7K for youtube to 8K with ffmpeg. :)

My local copy is very sharp. RU-vid compressed it a lot. So much sharpness and detail got lost. I deleted the RAW files already. Un téléphone. Nous savons tous les deux (espérons-le) que ce n'est pas vrai. Le 5D a 11 ans. Jusqu'à présent, il n'existe aucun téléphone qui filme mieux que le 5D. Et il n'y en aura pas non plus dans 11 ans. Limites optiques. Limites physiques. Etc... Si vous regardez attentivement, vous le verrez très bien. Bien sûr, je pense qu'on peut aussi faire de beaux films avec un téléphone. Mais ils seront différents.
