If you haven't seen my other blown up and bad engine teardown videos, the playlist is here. • Blown Up Engine Tear D...
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service specialty salvage operation in Saint Louis, MO. We specialize in niche markets and part of our model includes selling engine parts from bad or blown up engines. These engines rarely come with a story, mileage, or any clues as to what we'll find inside. Join me as I tear into each one and try to unwrap the mystery of why its been removed from its home.
Today's engine is a 5.9L Commonrail 24valve Cummins from a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with an Automatic Trans. This engine came to use complete, with the turbo and pump. This is part 1, and we're pulling all of the external components, and the cylinder head. Later this week, I'll upload part 2 where to dig into the bottom end.
If you'd like to buy parts from this engine or others I've torn down, shoot us an email at Importapartsales@Gmail.com
Thanks for watching!

I drove a work truck way back that had the 5.9 Cummins. It was a 2006 Ford F-650, YES with a Cummins. It didn't leak or use oil between changes. At 331,000 miles they sold it because they said it had "really high miles". Hey, if it's over a million miles I might have a modicum of concern - but not 330K.

When you disassemble the bottom end, carefully remove the oil spray jets for the bottom of the pistons. I'll bet you find debris behind the nozzles for #5 and #6. It's pretty common to see these get clogged and the pistons will overheat, get bound up in the bore and hammer the rod bearings out. Usually cheap oil filter media will break loose and clog the nozzles. jmho
@deeremeyer1749
@deeremeyer1749 Год назад
Hammer the rod bearings out? The bearings go first due to lack of oil pressure which is the ONLY thing that "hammers out" rod bearings that actually "spin out". The piston cooling jets end up plugged with rod bearing remnants "hammered" back into the crank and main journals and then flushed into the jets when someone finally "checks the oil" and tries to "heal" the catastrophic failure and "bearing knock" by putting oil in.

The "sensor" on the fuel pump is actually the metering valve that controls rail pressure. It is a replaceable part and does not render the pump useless if it is broken.

Something else I'd like to see is a 5.4 3v engine teardown. These were notoriously bad engines due to an under pressured oil system and narrow oil galleys. There are other videos of people working on them but none of someone just stripping the motor quickly. I'd like to see one for reference since it's possible I'll be working on one sometime soon; I have a 5.4 3v and as far as I know the timing components have never been replaced or upgraded. At 211,000 miles, I have to assume it's coming. So if I have to go in to the motor I'd probably want to replace rocker arms, possibly cams, and check hydraulic lifters as well. With truck prices being what they are it may be wise to replace crank and rod bearings as well. Would be cool to see a quick rundown of all of those components being pulled.

To get the injectors out you need to take out the pickup tubes first (after you take the fuel line off it's the nut holding them in). Pulling the injectors with out removing the tubes can damage them.
