Sorry if this is covered and I missed it somewhere but I have watched many of your videos many times over and this still confuses me - I have some characters either with long hair or a hat that has to go behind the neck. I dealt with this by making the hat a head with the same parameters as the actual head (following the way you currently recommend setting up heads). It's working but sometimes the movement is slightly off, although nothing I couldn't fix with re-recording. If there's a tutorial of yours that covers this I'd love to know!

I've been basically animating everything, then exporting everything out as one big batch of animations. Then in adobe premiere, I chopped it all up and pasted the part I needed in the specific scene I needed to use it. Takes add another dimension to my process.

@okaysamurai

Yeah! You could totally get creative with more advanced replays like an eye roll, crazy crossed eyes, etc. And if you did Transform (like the brows) instead of draggables you could also add scale to get bigger/smaller pupils. Lots of really interesting creative possibilities.

Hi okay samurai, Thanks as always for your lessons that you provide to us, recently I learned the trigger position for the hands. But doing a full posture of the hand with the arm like waving the hand and expressions as well, I didn't know how to do that, I saw Chloe and noticed on the Illustrator file that the trigger were hidden, small-sized layers behind her body, I looked in your videos for how to do that and unfortunately I couldn't find an answer. In the Willy example, his body in not independent so the arms can attach to it fine. But if you have a monster character or something where the arms attach to the head, you could make an invisible or placeholder layer behind the head and have them attach to that instead. If the problem persists, please upload a screenshot, video, or your File > Export > Puppet file to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.

the jaw stuff always confuses me- I think the latest way I did it is I had a background base for the head and the jaw was a seperate peice that copied the background head base. But that's redundant and unnecessary now that I've seen this clear explanation. I think I used a dot for the jaw too- not a line. So that probably helps.

Do we really still have to do it this way for better head turning? 13:45 Has Adobe added nothing in the past 2 years since this vid was uploaded?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai Год назад
This more advanced method is still the best if you're looking for additional head tilt - for many users the normal setup will be enough. I agree, ideally the Face behavior would just work like this by default (or give a checkbox option in its parameters to do so), giving the head more independence.

Dave, is it possible to maybe do a single youtube video on the creation of animated triggers more indepth, such as with the Purple Alien? We see you do animate the puppet by the press of a button, but we (or rather I) am still grasping of doing it ourselves. E.G. I have a really hard time creating a trigger which makes my character wave hello or goodbye.. OR if you have it explained somewhere I would LOVE to hear where I can see it and learn from it! P.S. What would be the ‘ideal’ computer specs to get Adobe character running at its best? More CPU cores, better graphics card or lots of RAM? Thanks for all your tutorials by the way, they have been invaluable! Subbed :)

@okaysamurai 3 года назад
These are our recommendations: helpx.adobe.com/adobe-character-animator/user-guide.html/adobe-character-animator/system-requirements.ug.html. Basically anything you would do to meet or go beyond those specs is great. I'm doing all of these videos with 16gb RAM with a 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 on a Macbook Pro, if that helps as a point of comparison.

Great tips! Is there a way to tweak the replay once it's in the swap set? For example say you want to fix the ending pupil position if you resized the whites of the eyes, or you realized the eyebrow animation speed is too slow and want to speed it up?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 2 года назад
Unfortunately once a replay is "packaged up" it isn't directly editable. But you could select the scene, uncheck "Smart Replays," press record, and trigger the replay - then it will "splat" all its tracks into the timeline that you can re-edit and re-package. For this reason I always keep one scene with all my replays so I can go back and edit them if I need to.

Great tutorials! I do have a rather tricky scenario I'm trying to accomplish. Wondering if you have any pointers? Is it possible to do this : A character lounging on the couch. I would like him to sit up, completely changing position. What I'm trying to do is inject some frame animation so it's a somewhat smooth flow from 1 position to another position. The thing is, this would be such a change that simple rotations won't suffice. It's kind of like transitioning to a new puppet almost. Does that make sense? I know this would be some kind of trigger/replay/switch set/cycle set up .....I just have no idea how to nail down the logic...
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai Год назад
That's a tricky one, but yeah, you would probably want to essentially nest one puppet inside another. This guy did something similar a long time ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NvyviQg1NwA.html. In its simplest form, imagine a group with cycle layers on it and 3 things inside: a group with puppet 1, a transition frame, and a group with puppet 2. You could trigger between those groups. If you'd like more detailed help, please upload a screenshot, video, or your File > Export > Puppet file to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.

How is the head staying attached if independent? Your body is still moving with head movement - how, if independent?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 2 года назад
The independent parts are looking for their dependent parents - so in this case, Head attaches to the Frontal view. Basically the weird way this is set up is that the main puppet is kind of a big dependent container to move everything inside, and everything connects to it.

@okaysamurai

Eyelashes or eyebrows? I've never seen anyone do the eyelashes before but it seems possible. For eyebrows, yes - you would want to untag the eyebrow tags on it so the face doesn't take over control.

@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
At 12:30 in this video I talk about adding extra head rotation. But for normal puppets, if the head and body are both non-independent (no crown icons) and in the same group, they will move together automatically. Chloe on the homescreen is rigged in this normal way, while this Willy character is in the more advanced extra head tilt way.
@imkgroupjapan5163
@imkgroupjapan5163 Год назад
Hey, I love the arm and hand movements but I can't get my puppet to that with body tracking. is this possible?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai Год назад
If the character was set up for body tracking you should be able to record them into replays like the Willy example puppet. But for this kind of more precise control I would probably recommend going the draggers route instead. If the problem persists, please upload a screenshot, video, or your File > Export > Puppet file to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.
@CrankWaved
@CrankWaved Год назад
Hi @okaysamurai , I want my puppet to be able to reverse bend his arm (like in 0:45 to 0:49) but when I use "reverse arm bend" the arm can only bend one way. and when I activate Auto arm bend the arm starts warping in weird directions even though I put sticks to make the arms more rigid.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai Год назад
Every character is going to be rigged and bend a little different. So for this character, I played around with the Elbow Flip Threshold angle until I got a transition point that seemed to work well for the various positions I wanted. In a worst case scenario, you can actually keyframe that parameter if you need a quick fix for something recorded. If the problem persists, please upload a screenshot, video, or your File > Export > Puppet file to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.

Great as always! I'm using the Willy character, and whenever I record a trigger like the brows raising up and down -it also records a take of the pupils and arms, deleting or overriding the last take of those features. I've disabled everything but the triggers option, not sure how it's assuming I want to override any other areas. They are both triggers, how do you disable one or more triggers to only record one at a time?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 месяцев назад
Are the other triggers set to swap sets with a default in place? If so, it is probably recording the default position, so you may want to temporarily remove the default from the swap set so there isn't any active trigger in those sets to record. That's my best guess at least...

Is there no way to keybind a keytrigger to fx. ctrl+1 instead of just 1? If you want a dymatic character, for livestreaming while playing a game, you're really limited with available keys witout ctrl or alt modifications, since most keys are used within what ever game you might be playing.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
Unfortunately not yet.There are some advanced ways to do things though, like having a swap set where a key press opens up an entirely different set of triggers - the Digital Puppets guys did a video on this a while back. Note you can also use external MIDI devices as well which don't have any limits.

Love the video. However, when I try to set up the custom pupil controls, after I record a two frame clip, the pupils keep reverting back to the original position of the Photoshop file. Can't seem to figure out what I've missed. Everything's off except Dragger in the behavior list and all tags were removed from the pupils in Rig mode and then only assigned as "draggable." Ideas?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
A few guesses: if they're triggered, you'll need triggers armed as well. If you only want to see recorded data, disarm the character in the timeline. If you record for longer than a 2 frame take, does the position stick or not? Maybe it has something to do with the 2 frame take being too short? Just my initial thoughts - if it persists, please post a screenshot, video, or File > Export > Puppet (.puppet file) to adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more help.

Hey Mr Dave can you make another cartoon like the consoles but without using after effects cause after effects takes a lot of juice to run and I can't run it so if you'd upload a workflow video for making it in premire pro That would be great 😶😶
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
Premiere Pro is also going to take a lot of power to run. You can try File > Export > PNG Sequence and WAV, which might run better for you in either PR or AE on a lower end system. Or technically you can do a lot of that stuff inside CH as well with cameras now.

Hi there Okay Samurai, I'm working on a project that started with a downloaded puppet. The character's facial features move to simulate the head turning slightly, and I was wondering if there is any way to add moustache that moves the same way, and whether you have done a video that covers this. Thanks a lot for all your videos, they have been very helpful in all my animating.

Hey Sensei!! the mouths are now working I re-ordered everything so it is now fine. So the last thing I would need to learn how to make as a trigger for more expressiveness on my video are the eyelids. Especially the half lids from below and squinting too. Do you have a video on that? Is it okay if I may suggest something. May you look at the most frequently asked questions like the ones I have been asking for the last couple of days , there is something I noticed , you probably would have covered a specific topic but for some reason you have a lot of videos and they are really big, and the info one would need would be like a minute long in your video, so may you look at the common things people always ask and trim your videos into 1-3 minute long trims of that specific thing and name them accordingly, like Just cut your lip-sync video into parts like HOW TO UPLOAD CUSTOM MOUTHS IN ADOBE CHARACTER ANIMATOR IN 2 MINUTES. I am a content creator and know that you wont have to spend alot of time on this because its just cutting an already existing video into essential parts. No one will think you are stealing or trying to be smart, If you did this my life would have been extremely easier without me having to ask you for every singly thing I need and ask if its hidden in one of your videos. The best way to success is by helping others is by creating answers to problems and If you would do this, Everyone would really appreciate you pin-pointing things we need. Thanks Sensei! your videos are really helping like wow I could literally give yoou gold if I had lol

Is there a way to keyframe triggers? I swear I've looked everywhere.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
No - currently triggers are performance based only - basically they're only on or off. So like for this character if I record and pressed 1 a few times, I would see a triggers track with my sad mouth showing up as a bar whenever the trigger is on. So currently just take bars, not keyframes.

I have dragabble on arms, legs and eyes, dont make sense. I know that already have that eye configuration but dont know I anything move with mouse click.
@okaysamurai

Willy is an advanced character - his eyes and arms are set up via triggers instead of the usual methods, which I talk through in the video. I would try another puppet if you're looking for more user input into the animations.

Hello okay samurai, thanks for your helpful lessons, but I encountered a problem where when I designed and completed the puppet I noticed there were problems with moving the hands where they overlap each other, the problem when the hand overlaps the shoulder you know what I mean, is there any way to solve this problem even if it is crooked??, I tried a lot and did not reach a solution ..
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
With dragger arms there are limitations to how far you can bend it. If the arm goes over top of itself it will start having "z-fighting" because everything on the same layer is trying to go to the same position. The way around this would be to make a custom-drawn arm/hand you can trigger for these particular instances.

I can only seem to get one pupil draggable at a time. I can either drag both, or one. The one I have most recently tagged as "draggable" is the one I can drag. Does anyone have an idea what's going on with my rig?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 2 года назад
Yes, with the dragger behavior you can only drag one draggable handle at a time. For the eyes a better way to do this might be to use the mouse & touch input or keyboard input under eye gaze instead of camera control.
