5 Bad Game Boy Games That Will Make You Cringe 

Castellian/Tower Toppler (or Nebulus how it is called in Europe) was very popular when it came out on micro computers. It was praised for the innovative tower animation effect and the puzzle platformer aspect and received very high ratings when it came out in 1988. It still remains as a cult classic. The Game Boy version is 1:1 port in the main stages btw, only the bonus stages are different. The C64 and the Amiga version do require exactly the same reactions to get through the levels. My opinion changed on that game quite a bit. I played this for a very long time on the C64 back then and loved it. Over the years some gameplay elements became more and more annoying, esp those hidden platform traps, chain reaction downfalls combined with falling down just be changing the walk direction. The main issue is that those gameplay elements are not designed to be unique. Enemies might look the same, but one can be shot but not the next one. Platforms that disappear by collision look exactly the same as its safe neighbor. It is not exactly a bad game by definition, but it celebrates unfair moments. There are no random gameplay elements btw, everything is strictly scripted. The game requires to be played similar to quick time sequences.

Terminator 2 on the GB was one I regretted buying as a child, that tower sequence in the first level... >.>

Great video. The GameBoy was my first and only video game console until I went away to college in 1996 and got the N64. I still have it. And still play it. 🤓

The original Mortal Kombat. Especially considering that much more competent ports of fighters were possible on the little handheld; like Mortal Kombat 2.

I remember mowing a bunch of lawns to buy Mortal Kombat for the Game Boy, then immediately regretting all of it...

Toy Story's just an insult to the original on the Genesis/MD. It went from some of the best pre-rendered 16-bit graphics with all the techniques they used, to the near bare-minimum on the Gameboy. It's also much smoother of course.

Good video! I have Tower Toppler on the Atari XL/XE computer and its fun to play! I didn't know that it came out for the Game Boy system!

John you read my mind with the ported fighters. I had MK3 and it was just... sad to say the least.

i regretted getting mighty morphin power rangers on gabeboy,floaty jumps,bad hit detection,and selecting your power weapon drains your lifebar and i've seen on AVGN that the later levels get difficult. And lastly, the "continue?" screen can be misleading if you play it for the first time.

Mortal Kombat was a pretty bad port that I regretted buying as a kid. The control lag was awful. However it was the first time I got to control Goro.

I remember getting “Toy Story” in the summer of 97! I loved it! It took me a few years to beat it, but that’s what I wanted in a game that replayability factor. Although I hated that last stage with flying--I could never understand why they put a roof or overgrown hedges where there were none in the movie. I hope Disney allows Virgin to someday make a collection for Switch where they collect the SNES, Gameboy and Genesis on one cart like they did with Aladdin/Lion King. But one bad game was “Jeopardy: Sports Edition”. That game had a bug in it where it would freeze for like 2 minutes before starting the countdown on the question. That bug wasn’t in the regular “Jeopardy!” Gameboy game but it was annoying in JSE.

Oh man I remember trying to play through the Game Boy Toy Story. I remember not being able to get past the first or second level. It was so bad. By the way, what is your opinion on the NES port of Castellian?

i remember getting a game gear, really feeling that was special after the gameboy, color screen, it even was a tv that never got any connection.....and it used a few batteries..

That death sound in Mouse Trap Hotel sounded a lot familiar to the one in Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly only to find out just a few minutes later that both of them were developed by Imagininer which I get the feeling is also using the same engine judging by the gameplay

About Castelian... I actually play it on pc back in the day a lot... can’t say exactly what about that version but for me it looks so wrong... almost like different game. So I don’t think that people who like any other versions share that feeling with that one.

I've played a lot of bad games but somehow fortunately missed the GB stinkers and even the midtier games. The fact that Metroid 2 may be my least favorite GB game shows the strength of the games I've played.

Great video; Soccer Mania is an abomination for sure. Fist of the north Star is worse than Pit-Fighter though. Still had some fun with Pit-Fighter back in the day. I can't say that about Fist of the North star.

I’ve been playing plenty my old favourites on my ips lit dmg gameboy lately as well as on my miyoo mini. I loved the super Mario land titles and Kirby’s dreamland titles. I recently tried that toy story after enjoying the snes version as a kid and I couldn’t believe how bad it is on the gameboy

Honestly almost any movie tie-in game could've taken the place of Toy Story. They were almost all terrible.

The only viable iteration of Pit Fighter is the original arcade machine. ... Castelian is actually a fun game. Challenging, sure. The GB port? No. Just, no. As for my picks for the worst GB games...hmmm...I guess I haven't actually played any that weren't satisfactory as I don't have any that fit. Yeah; I've not played any of the five mentioned (I've played Castelian, Toy Story and Pit Fighter but not the GB ports specifically). ... Actually, there is one game (noted by another) I have played. Mortal Kombat. Thing is, I'm terrible at fighting games (doesn't make me love them less), so my take on the GB port of MK is *_that it's no more or less difficult for me to play,_** FWIW.* ... The buggiest GB game I've ever played would be Pokémon Red/Green/Yellow/Blue. Not a bad game by any stretch, but so full of bugs/glitches/etcetera, it's *_a treasure trove of shitposting/memes,_* lmfao 🤣 ... I've heard some people say that GB Tetris is bad. I dunno how anyone could come to that conclusion, but there is a fan-made version that applies 'more realistic' physics and makes it a tougher challenge, but I don't think anyone takes *Notetris* seriously... 🤣

Pit-Fighter on Game Boy, same as the SNES version but with even worse black & white graphics and only two buttons with unresponsive controls. (8:08)

what about the one where you're the blob and you have to convert into different items to move around rooms to save the queen, like the ladder, trampoline a bouncy ball. that was insanely a sill game.

My mind was blown when I saw how good the simulated 3D looked in that castle tower game. It’s really amazing how far some game developers were able to push the limited technology they had to work with.

I really liike the soccer game you played.. I figure if you take it on the go, you cant have SEGA_GENESIS quality play or Amiga-600 play.. I loved the graphics and gameplay .. on that soccer game. That's all..

I've never played Mouse Trap Hotel but something about it was familiar. So I looked up the developer, Imagineering, then looked at their wiki page. Yep, every crappy studio had their own house style and I've played some of their games.

Mouse trap was a fun board game as a kid. We only built the contraptions. Never learned how to play.

Ah yes, Mouse Trap is a classic example of a difficult game you somehow beat as a kid, but cannot beat when you are a grown adult! Need to dig that thing back up (somewhere) and give it another shot. xD

I love the Gameboy, but yes those stinker games exist.

I remember saving up for Jurassic Park for my GB , seeing that advert come play in the park ,what a crappy game that turned out to be.

How DID Dragon's Lair avoid this list? There were so many bad games on the Game Boy, but that has to be in the top ten at least. It's a wimpy wimpy wimpy action puzzle title with no resemblance to the arcade game... not that there was any chance of that happening. (Some crazy dudes ported the ACTUAL arcade game to the Game Boy Color... not sure why, but it exists!)

Why do I always see a THQ game on worst of lists? In this case, Pit Fighter. Almost every single worst of videos have a THQ game. My favorite system to this day is SNES and I remember in it's retail days that every time I would see that THQ logo, the game had to be terrible.

Nice list of crappy games. My top pick for worst Game Boy game has to be Batman Forever. Scaling this horrible mess of a Megadrive/Snes game down to a small monochrome screen makes the graphics muddy and almost unintelligible. The game is also sluggish and having less buttons makes the controls more convoluted than they already were. I never got past the circus as a kid because I couldn't for the life of me make the grapling hook work intentionally.

Mortsl Kombat 1 was a nightmare. I was really ripped off with this one when I was a teen. I was vindicated with the real MK on the PS3.

PitFighter was a brave choice for a conversion! Mind you, the original game is pretty dreadful.

Lethal Weapon.. i loved the movies but the game was just a really bad double dragon copy. The controls are unresponsive and punches sometimes dont even register.

Play Action Football. When I got the GB in 1992 for Christmas it came with Tetris and PAF. I could never do anything in that game. I was always getting a safety. Mortal Kombat 1 is absolute trash. If there was ever a game with a negative frame rate it would be this.

Turn and Burn for the original Game Boy. The Game Boy is my favorite system. And Turn and Burn is my very first game that my mom purchased for me. Game was so bad i almost quit gaming!

Question? I DONT Believe thay were allowing you to get your money back for an opened game back in the 90's you had to exchange it for the same game. Best thing to do was to buy these games along with a bottle of Tylenol. LoL.

Castlevania always annoyed me back then. Just too sluggish, and odd graphical glitches. Same thing being played on emulators. Including whatever they're using in the Castlevania anniversary collection 😖
