In the "olden days" before peel and stick wallpaper, we used starch to attach fabric to the wall! Definitely no wall damage there, if anyone is looking for ideas that won't upset the landlord.
@DNAConsultingDetectives
@DNAConsultingDetectives 10 месяцев назад
I did starched fabric too! A woven fabric works well. I think I used a flat sheet at one place. Soak the fabric in liquid starch. I’m sure they’re a RU-vid video on how to do this. Comes off super easy with zero damage to the wall.

These are some great ideas Lisa. But renter’s might want to ask their landlord to change out the light fixture for them. As a landlord I absolutely don’t want renters doing anything electrical 😬😳. We love it when renters want to personalize and treat property like their home😊

Yikes, you don't want some aesthete moving in and burning your entire property down (and potentially putting other lives in danger by not being a certified electrician and jimmy rigging something (which, shockingly some people do), all because designers have shamed them into removing "boob lighting" or taking down the ceiling fan because it's "an eyesore". Love so much about designer videos, but they often encourage people to do things that are either ill-advised, illegal in the renter's contract, and (occasionally) just plain unsafe if they mess up the electrical. I've seen a few RU-vid videos of renters warning others to NOT install the "removable" peel-n-stick tile because it actually took hunks of the sheetrock with it right in the middle of them trying to move out and return the unit to the owner as they rented it. They warned others to NOT believe the design videos and showed the damage the peel-n-stick tile left after a year or two of being in place. There were no actual holes all the way through, but wow, had they ever damaged the integrity of the sheetrock, and were trying to spackle over it so the landlord wouldn't notice it. Before long, landlords might be including this in the list of forbidden activities in rentals if it keeps happening.

I did most of these in my old apartment. Funny thing, I painted my apartment and when the landlord went to show it- I hadn’t painted back yet. The next tenant ask the landlord to keep all the colours. Landlord wanted to charge me for repainting, but didn’t know I was there when the management team was showing the place to her. My response was “I am sorry- but I when I spoke to her- she said she didn’t want it changed, did she change her mind? “. I was open to the change but I never heard from him again. Yay!

These are all excellent tips! Lighting is key. Hay has a hanging paper lantern pendant in the Noguchi style that is very inexpensive. Also changing out cheap knobs in kitchen cabinets and bathrooms, changing out cheap plastic backplates for light switches with something nicer. Essentially anything you touch that is upgraded makes big difference, and just keep the old ones labeled in plastic bags to put back when you leave. I also think that little luxuries make a big difference and if you have a really good hand soap like Mandarin by Jo Malone, or very good fragrance diffuser sticks, a home can feel elevated and joyful and special.

Thanks, Lisa! One tip: definitely read your rental agreement thoroughly. For example, in my province, there are a certain number of times a landlord is allowed to inspect your property for maintenance or repair per year (as long as they give you two days’ written notice). You don’t want to be antagonising your landlord by doing things they don’t approve of, because it could harm your relationship if you surprise them when they enter the property, and if they’re particularly spiteful, they could evict you for breaking your rental agreement. Just some food for thought. I used to be on the forgiveness-then-permission side of things, with the intention to return everything back to the original state at the end of my tenancy. All it took was a single landlord who was obsessive over detail and suddenly I’m a little more careful.

I always forget there is now peelable wallpaper. That's easy to do or painting. Spiffing-up outdoor areas to reflect your needs and personality is fairly inexpensive, so that's good. I did not know about peelable backsplashes. The black was gorgeous. I would not have thought so much about large artworks. And the great tip about "no glass" is really a good one. And you get to keep it.

I had peel and stick tiles in my kitchen. They did major damage to my wall when I removed them. I don't know if all tiles are like that but I certainly won't use them again.
@whiteserpent6753
@whiteserpent6753 10 месяцев назад
I think there’s a channel I saw that reviewed peel and sticks and talked about whether they really were removable as cleanly as one would expect. I believe there were a lot that did not. But, note, anything that you want to peel off is going to depend on whether the paint is adhered well to the surface beneath and simply how durable the paint is. And that’s something you just don’t know. I’ve had cheap paint that stuck really well, expensive paint that scrapes if you so much as look at it wrong, etc. If things weren’t properly set in the first place and it wasn’t primed well, you may rip down to the drywall paper. Or, if you put things on wood, I’ve had painter’s tape rip into the wood fibers when I’ve removed it. The only peel and stick I’m confident of getting off (caveat about wood surface above aside) is the stuff that is hard to get to stick to anything because the adhesive is so weak. The artwork idea seems safer to me, but it’s hard to see how I could have transported some of those giant things without renting a truck (which is ok, but not something you want to do a lot- and not something I think they would have let me do when I was under 25).

Just buy window treatments - curtains with rod set very high, can do high end roller shades, Roman shades, etc. - unfortunately you’ll just be out of money later if the measurements can’t transfer to new place.

I would be wary of the peelable wallpaper and tiles - how confident can we be that it will peel off OK when the time comes? The last flat I rented, the landlady's wallpaper was trying to peel itself off already - there's no way we could peel anything off that and leave her wallpaper unharmed.

Lol these things only work in usa ( except the art thing).. in other countries drilling a hole or painting the wall is strictly forbidden by the contract. The landlord can come for a surprise inspection if he suspect n evict u on spot plus charge for damages. Also no tinkering with lights! The reason for all this is coz houses r built with proper brick n cement n not wood board, like in usa. And sometimes tenents put wrong light fixture which blows the fuse of the entire appartment ( many other people live in them )

Great video, thank you! I was wondering if you're able to advise on the best height to place wall sconce light's in the living room space? I researched a little and found 1 article stating to place them at about 5 1/2 feet? Thank you, I find the rental idea's very inspiring to get me thinking as I've recently moved and trying to figure out my space. Also, I have a small apartment with open plan living and kitchen space as well as the only bathroom right off the living/ dining area, not any type of hallway separation between any of those spaces. It's just one, not very large rectangle, the bathroom door positioned between what may be considered the 2 area's of the kitchen/dining and living room. I would love to somehow make the spaces feel a bit better partitions for slightly more cosy, defined spaces, and I'm not sure how to make the bathroom feel more discreet. I'd love to see a video on more rental idea's! Thank you.😊

The patio is my favorite 'room' of my apartment: nature, privacy, quiet, and when I had a cat they'd hang out, too. Except when there's a long rain storm in the winter. I'm in southern California. The worst part of my rental is the paint. The whole place is done in pale yellow beige, that's gloss! It doesn't go with anything and the gloss is horrid. It's a cheap apartment where they just put more paint on, over and over, to where there are gummy drips in places. And the cupboard doors took it the worst, including some warping. I can't afford to re-do all that. I might spring for some new cheap baseboards, as they weren't done well to begin with and are peeling away at spots, also don't match the flooring or paint. (The floor is white tile with black grout. That would be fine if the paint weren't yellow.) Not to mention the cheapest wall-to-wall shag carpet in the lvr and bedrooms. Ugh! 🤢 More rental tips, please!! 😁 PS All my landlords have said regular holes are okay (they use that putty, too, although I usually put it in). They just don't like the ones with plastic anchors inside, but sometimes you can get those out yourself, too.
