I still remember how surprised I was after the first couples of episodes of Now and Then, Here and There. I didn't know it was that brutal when I watched it, and I was legit blown away by how things go.

“If you’ve seen digimon you know what to expect, rape murder and child abuse”. Me-uh what? I don’t remember that, I mean, I missed a season or two but...wtf?!

NADIA!!! Thank you for bringing about some recognition to this show, my local library had the first season on dvd and I used to watch it all the time! I'm glad others enjoy it as well!

watch 12 kingdoms. Obscure but excellent Trapped In Another World plot. The fantasy of Being Rightful Champion of the Land is pulled down to reality with the heavy realization of responsibility. Themes of wounded people coming to terms with their action abound. Dense but rewarding political wushu

As someone said in the comments, Juuni Kokuki/ Twelve Kingdoms is also a very good anime for you guys who like fantasy. You only need to have the patience to get through the first episodes (the main character start as a very annoying girl but then gets really awesome - it's actually one of the best character developments out there). Sadly it never really 'ends'. There's a big part of the story left unexplored. You can always read the light novels but it's not the same thing Still, one of the best fantasy animes in my opinion. I actually went after Scrapped Princess because someone said it had a similiar feeling, but yeah, no.

Random Fun Fact: King of Bandit Jing was one of the six series that has been aired on russian TV channel MUZ-TV alongside Chobits, Chrono Crusade, Full Metal Panic!, Gungrave and Ikki Tousen (what a wierd combination) back in 2005-2006. They were the reason I got really hooked up on this whole anime thing and Jing actually got a pretty big following in Russian Anime Community (back then, right now it's a fucking cesspool). This series also was the origin of my favorite quote that I still use till this day: Jing: Haven't you heard that women, like wine, just get better with age? Kir: Sorry, but I prefer fresh grapes.

Thank you so much for bringing Now and then, here and there to my attention with this video. I just finished it today and it has become one of my favourite shows. It is so well done, my only complaints are the one dimensional villain and hero (Which it kinda' works in this case because his viewpoints are constantly challenged) and the short duration, one or two more episodes would have done wonders for the show as the ending felt a bit rushed.

You are one of the most articulate and eloquent speakers i have found here on youtube. Its evident you're a writer and your extensive use of vocabulary is refreshing. You definitely sold these few shows and i look forward to checking a few out

Must say that I'm so glad to see someone recommend "Now & Then, Here & There", because it's been one of my all time favorite anime for so many years. Also, kudos for bringing up "Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water". From the list, I'm specially interested on "Scrapped Princess", at least you have make it sound fabulous

I watched Scrapped Princess many years ago, while I barely remember the plot and characters, but I do remember being fond of the show.

MOTHER FUCKING JING! JING! I FUCKING LOVE THAT SHOW! HOLY SHIT JING! GETTING SOME LOVE! HOLY FUCK THAT ART DESIGN! READ THE MANGA! WHY ISN'T TWILIGHT TALES ADAPTED? HOLY FUCK JING! FUCKING JING! I THOUGHT i WAS THE ONLY ONE! Funny Story: All my anime DVD's were stolen during a break in, including my Jing ones, 10 years later, I walk into a local second hand DVD store to browse their selection and I see all 4 volumes, I joke that they must've been mine from back then, the clerk laughs and we get the boxes complete with inserts... the inserts... have my notes from art class scribbled on them... after 10 years... I got reunited with my DVD's. The guys at the shop let me have them for free when I explained the story (they were selling for like £1.50 each so no big deal) but it meant the world to me.

Fuck yeah mah boi Jing is getting some spotlight.

Have you seen Moribito?

I have to thank italian television's almost overwhelming everyday children programming blocks between the late 1970s and late 2000s for making me discover "Nadia - Secret of Blue Water", because it has always been one of my favorite series of all times, and for years I longed for a home video version (because Mediaset only produced a series of VHS in the early '90s), but thankfully Yamato Video is there to help.

If Avatar can be considered anime (i.e. subject to be recommended in this kind of list) I'd put forth the French series Wakfu / Dofus (Treasures of Kerub / new movies). I love the fantasy world Ankama created for these series and even though I dislike the game, the animation in the shows is very, very nice. Its probably one of my favorite fantasy series and it hits a lot of style points that I like -- bright colors, deeply fantastical setting, interesting mix of 3D and 2D visuals, great character designs, background art and special effects animation and awesome dragons. Who doesn't love dragons? Amazingly, Wakfu was almost entirely animated in FLASH of all things. It shows in some of the animation occasionally, but it didn't really detract from the visual style that much for me. Rather, its like they adapted to Flash and pushed it to its limits. Wakfu has two seasons with a third coming in 2017, and after successful Kickstarter campaigns to dub both seasons in English, I think its available on DVD/Blu-Ray (though very rare) and streaming on Netflix. The new Dofus movie, "Julith" is available on Steam, of all places. Heck, they even collaborated with Madhouse to make two movies (Noximilien l'Horloger and The Legend of Ogrest). Frankly the argument over what's "anime" or not is kinda silly at this point with worldwide studio cross-pollination becoming a thing.

I am so glad Chaika got a mention at least, but now I really do wanna watch Scrapped Princess. I have been looking at it every so often and gotten curious but now I really want to watch it so badly.

i was so happy when i saw ima, soko ni iru boku/now and then, here and there on this list-it's one of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy anime and it's severely under-appreciated. it probably doesn't help that it's got the whole narutaru-type situation going on with it's first episode, and comes off as an entirely different type of story than what i'll actually be. :/ great to see such a high-profile anime youtuber reccing it!

While not as obscure as the shows you've mentioned, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita does not get much talk. I strongly recommend it.

I picked up king of bandits jing at new York comic con and it sits on my shelf with much love today. definitely deserved the top spot here :) I wish there was a sequel of the show bc it deserves it.

Legit had someone loose their shit when i called Avatar an anime. You sir just got a sub.

As amusing as the bad 90's dub for Nadia is, it only goes for like 9 episodes......The dub produced in the early 00's however is pretty good imho. A little rough early on a they used actual children for the leads, and Jean's accent is iffy at best early on, it really does grow on you.

hey Geoff, great video. I have seen now and then, here and there, scrapped princess and Jing and loved all three of them. Now and then was heart wrenching, but was extremely well done and thought provoking. Both scrapped princess and Jing were very enjoyable in their own rights. I'm glad that you put these in a video so they can hopefully reach a wider audience. If you are still looking for recommendations, a good older series is also Sorcerous Stabber Orphen and its sequel Revenge. its has entertaining characters and a decent plot with some good comedy, if you haven't already check it out.

I discovered Jing the King of Bandits' manga first in my High-School Library's comics section along with Batman: Death and the Maidens, Hulk: Nightmerica, The Runaways, Prince of Tennis, Baby Steps, and Slam Dunk. Since I had just finished watching D. N. Angel I couldn't help draw parallels between the two since they both dealt with supernatural thieves and both had shapeshifting pets.

Anime: Animation from Japan. That is the one requirement to be considered an anime. Avatar doesn't meet that.

Finished Scrapped Princess per your recommendation. The main trio are so goddamn likeable and real its absurd. If you want to convince somebody to watch it, just show them the bqndits scene in the first few episodes.
