This is really great advice for new AND veteran teachers. It's so important to be prepared and to try not and do it all in one day. I drastically changed my first day of school routine years ago and it has been a game changer. Typically, secondary teachers spend the first day of school talking about rules and procedures and routines etc. BORING. I like to take advantage of this very unique day. The one day of the year where you have EVERYONE'S attention, everyone is excited to be there and everyone is paying attention. You get one shot at this so don't let the opportunity pass you by! As a French teacher (I teach beginners who have never been exposed to the language) I decide to skip the boring rules and procedures. I say one thing about it. "You are in middle school, if you don't know how to behave in a classroom, there is no list of rules that I can give that will change that". I actually teach a cognates lesson and tell them about me all in French. I don't use any English, just pictures and easy words they will understand. I give them fun facts about me (one of them being that I absolutely DESPISE Ed Sheeran) and turn it into a get to know your teacher activity. My hating Ed Sheeran becomes the big thing for the whole year and helps me build relationships. Kids start bringing me pictures of Ed Sheeran that I deface and put on my board, they sing Ed Sheeran songs, draw pictures or me married to him etc. and I have become known as the teacher that hates Ed Sheeran. Even kids who don't have me in class stop me to joke about this. This approach really sets the tone for the whole year. I love that you shared this video because so many teachers feel like they have to get it all done on the first day and you don't! You hace 180 days to get it all done! It really is! During the shutdown when we had virtual classes one of my classes all got together and all changed their profile pics to Ed Sheeran and all turned off their cameras. It was a sea of Ed. LOL. It really is a great bonding tool! @@tootscarlson

Not sure if this is as true for K-5, but high school teachers, get to school very early. There will be a lot of traffic. Parents & student drivers often aren’t used to the traffic pattern. There will also be tons of schedule changes. Embrace the chaos and be flexible. Another great video! Keep them coming. Thanks for sharing your tips & experience!

Great thought to add in there! I know the traffic situation would be totally different with student drivers so that's great to keep in mind. My contract hours usually began over an hour before students would arrive to school (plus they obviously aren't driving themselves but the carpool line can get crazy) so that was never too big of an issue. But, I can see where it would be something to think about in advance! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 🎉

Michelle, thanks for all of your great suggestions. As a teacher, I have found it’s always a good idea for a teacher to have many backup ideas that we can use at different t moments. The ones you suggest here are excellent choices. 👍

Love the tips Michelle! The fill in activities are my favorite. We didn’t have directed drawings back in my day and if we did, I would still find a way to screw it up because I cannot draw worth a lick😭! Icebreakers are such an awesome way to get the classroom community going without the kids feeling the pressure of introducing themselves and it gives the teacher insight to the students without them knowing it!

You can find websites to set alarms through as well and even use a regular wrist watch or another clock in your room to set alarms so there are definitely other options outside of just your phone!

Yeah, unfortunately every state and district is different... it's hard to make the video too early because some teachers are just starting their summer at that point and don't even want to think about back to school LOL! But I hope you had a great first day! 🎉
