The first three that came to mind for me were brazil nuts, flax, and seaweed, and I also eat sauerkraut and turmeric pretty much daily. It was cool to see them all in your video! The one I slack on the most is probably the seaweed. I recently found out that the shelf stable sauerkraut/other fermented foods do not actually contain live cultures, which makes sense but I never really thought about it too much. So if you want the probiotic benefits, get the refrigerated ones that say "contain live cultures"! :D

Yes you are totally right! I did actually mention that in the script but ended up cutting it out since it was getting long. Really important info and in hindsight probably should have left it in. Thanks for sharing, I'll pin this comment.

HUUUUGE benefits to eating homemade cultured veggies/ sauerkraut. CHEAP and EASY to make at home. I do it all the time, chop veggies, add just a little salt, squeeze it good to release the liquid a bit and jam it into glass mason jars, with a curl of cabbage at the top to push the veggies down into the liquid. Let it sit for 5-7 days. Then pop it into the fridge. We love it at our house.

As a woman, I need extra IRON (bioavailable), and have used Blackstrap Molasses for decades to keep my iron level adequate. I drop a little into my morning oatmeal, with a TBL of ground flax, 1 Brazil nut, and I've covered a lot of my minimum req'mts for the day. Edit to add one more: Nutritional Yeast...use it nearly every day for B vitamins and minerals.
@mitkoogrozev
@mitkoogrozev 2 года назад
Nice. The synergy between turmeric and black pepper in the video reminded of many other synergies that happen when we eat a rich whole food plant based diet. And speaking of iron bioavailability reminded me that probably eating iron rich plants with the ones that are rich in vitamin C would boost it's absorption. Most of the time I also eat oats for breakfast, and I also cut one small kiwi fruit into it, which seems to be packed with vitamin C compared to all the other fruit I cut in (banana and apple).
@erin1220
@erin1220 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment! My sister struggles with her iron levels so I'll definitely suggest the blackstrap molasses
@VerySeriousUser

If you're after bioavailable iron you are looking for heme iron. Non-heme iron, from plants, is not as bioavailable.
@mitkoogrozev
@mitkoogrozev 2 года назад
@@VerySeriousUser Actually iron is one of the minerals we can easily overdose on and have problems from that too. The problem with consuming heme-iron is that our body cannot regulate it's concentrations so you can have too much and get iron poisoning , while we can with the one in plants. And that in plants is the healthiest option, easily boosting it's bioavailability if you have vitamin C the food you're eating. To get heme-iron it means you have to eat animal flesh which comes with a lot of toxins and cancer causing compounds that you might want to avoid. In short the risks are higher than the benefits from that source.
@VerySeriousUser

@@mitkoogrozev Most of what you said is false, but from experience there's no point in expanding on it since this is basically religious rather than scientific.

Derek, you are never boring. I have learned so much from you. I am trying to switch to a PBWF diet because I am diabetic and my quality of life is slipping away. I have read of many people healing themselves and just feeling better, sleeping better ect. by changing their diet. I am a devoted follower of your channel not because I want to be a vegan body builder, (I am a frumpy 60 year old woman), but because every video is so encouraging to me. You are knowledgeable and eager to share. You make it seem easy to make the healthy choices because you are excited about the food (and your presentations make the food look delicious too). You help me stay on track. And you never know, I may get myself some weights and try to get strong if I can succeed in improving my health. Thanks!

A video on the benefits of good fats would actually be great!! I find figuring out how much in the way of 'good fats' I should be consuming very confusing. Many of the 'plant based' doc's on the internet (Dr Barnard for example) say we get enough fats in fruit and veg so to eat very modestly, not just of the oils, but even of the avocado/flax/nuts/seeds. How much is too much? What are your thoughts on fats causing insulin resistance (Mastering Diabetes)?
@Simnettnutrition
@Simnettnutrition 2 года назад
You are right, it is a somewhat murky topic in the plant based community. Lots of ideas and opinions. What I have learned is that for most people it's probably somewhere in the middle. Sort of like the protein thing. Some say you don't need to even think of it, some say you can't ever get enough. I think fats are the same. For some groups maybe a very low fat diet is helpful, for others maybe they need more fats. If you are trying to reverse some sort of disease like heart problems or diabetes a very low fat diet is probably your best bet. If you are a body builder and already have a bunch of muscle maybe you need every last bit of protein you can get, if it's your first day in the gym and you are eating in a surplus you probably don't have to be too concerned. Ya dig? As far as fat causing insulin resistance, I believe that is the cause. I am not a scientist so I can only go by the information provided to me, but intramyocellular lipids certainly play a major role. Doesn't mean a few handful of nuts/seeds is going to give you any blood sugar issues. Good question and I guess a good video topic.
@langreeves6419
@langreeves6419 2 года назад
I don't know what's best. But based on the information I've studied, I cut out all oils. For nuts and seeds, I only eat raw, and in a dish of food, not by themselves. One of the nutrition doctors talks really bad about nuts...he will say "they're salty, and that makes you eat too much." Really irritating, because raw unsalted nuts do NOT cause that eating behavior, only roasted salted nuts do. I don't limit my raw nuts, seeds, avocado or olive intake. Sometimes for more fat I'll eat peanut butter or tahini. But I go a little sparingly on those.

Brazil nuts were always one of my favorite nuts ever since I was a kid. My dad used to buy whole nuts and crack them, all kinds, especially around Christmas. I always thought Brazil nuts looked a bit like a coconut on the outside and tasted like coconut also. Which is weird because I never really liked coconut, LOL but maybe it was the texture of the Brazil nut that reminded me of fresh coconut texture. Anyway, you should give them a try. They don't have an overly strong flavor so there wouldn't be much too object to.

This kind of video doesnt bore me AT ALL. I love to know nutritional detailed information and one of my favorite videos that you've done, is about soaking the beans and the details about every single one of them.

This is one of the most informative videos I’ve seen in a while! Thank you for covering all of this information! I actually joke with my family that 1 Brazil nut keeps the doctor away for selenium purposes instead of an apple😂 I actually follow all of these except the black pepper with turmeric so I definitely learned something new! I grind up my flax and chia and create a mixture of them together to add until oatmeal and smoothies

Love this type of content, you make it so informative and relatable, good to know what I am already consumming (still don't like the taste of the Brazil nuts) and what I should investigate (the sauerkraut for sure). Best from Belgium!
