In this review, I go over how to clean the inside of the container, clean the water you put in and how to use it when you need it. I offer some tips about using it that we were not aware until we had to use them. For more information, see the links below...
Some suggestions...
Be sure to wear goggles and gloves when working with bleach. My wife forgot her goggles. If indoors, be sure to use in well ventilated room. We usually use a 3m half face respirator with filters designed for fumes like bleach when working with cleaning agents and bleach. Do not boil bleach or mix with any other chemicals. Only use unscented bleach. Dont use bleach that has anything other than bleach in it. Follow CDC guidelines.

Excellent video. I purchased the same blue containers and water preserver concentrate. While the bottle says it preserves tap water for 5 years, it depends on how it is stored, as you mentioned in your video. Another suggestion another reviewer had was that when air-drying the blue container, put a thin cloth on top of the opening and put a rubber band around it while it dries so insects or other flying objects don't make their way into the container before filling it for storage.

I usually rotate my tap water containers about once a year. Per my lazy butt guidelines and my bad knee. I keep it in my basement crawl space. It is dryed in with a concrete floor. No problems. Had a water outage and a boil order. No one had any body issues with the water after drinking it.

Thanks for the information! I have 11 cases of dsanti water on hand at all times due to our really bad tap water. One is open for use and 10 more in rotation. I have about 50 of the larger not quite a gallon size ice mountain water jugs filled with tap water and a hint of bleach. I rotate some monthly and just dump out the bottles into washer when doing laundry so it’s not wasted. Then refill with tap. If I were to need to use the jugs for drinking/cooking I would likely boil it first. Don’t have a Berkey yet but definitely on my radar. I really like the idea of the blue jugs however for a single older woman the weight is a really big con for me. And I would have to store them in the garage with a lot of temp fluctuations. I store my bottled water behind my living room couch -easy access and pretty steady temps. My couch is out maybe 5 inches from wall and due to the slant downward on the back I can easily store the whole case. They are not visible and no one has noticed! Great info and greatly appreciate your thorough reviews. 😃

Another good hands on review. Thanks. FYI for those who might want to use 1 gallon water bottles from the grocery store, expect those bottles to leak after a couple of years. Those bottles are designed to degrade in a landfill.

We got the same containers. However, we decided the locking mechanism built into the caps was rather cumbersome. So, we removed them. Besides, we plan on storing them in our garage and, as such, we're not as concerned with tampering. As for the spout feature, we'll just use the caps that already have holes in them. We're fortunate enough that we live in an area where our city put great effort into making sure our tap water is clean. I know, I've made coffee with our tap water and it taste just like it went through a Brita filter.

Thanks! I bought these for an earthquake, but then felt like I wanted someone to show me what to do. I had thought that the 6-month storage was if the water wasn’t treated first. In other words, tap water without the added bleach. I think I saw that on the Amazon site where I purchased these. But I’m planning on adding a treatment-chemical-drops, so I was hoping to wait 5 years before changing the water. I think I saw that (5) on the bottle of the treatment. But since they’ll be stored between 70 and 80 degrees, maybe I’ll change to 3 years. Just an arbitrary number I’m choosing, lol.

BTW, we use 5 gal "pool shock" containers which is considerably less than the price of the containers you feature but is the same make up. We also have on hand for a long term situation powdered pool shock which can last up to ten years or more if kept in ideal circumstances. It is important that any powdered pool shock not contain any germicides, algaecides, additives or anything else, just plain old chlorine. After buying liquid pool shock for the swimming pool we simply keep the container and forfeit our $8 deposit. I have ten containers on hand and in winter I keep four in the greenhouse from November until March. It works well for us.

recently saw a youtube video where somebody had stored water in a blue barrel for many years and ran it through a berkey and it tasted good. We then tried the same with water we had stored for almost 2 years same result. guess any of these filters that can filter river water can filter old water
@JayP-kd5rc
@JayP-kd5rc 3 года назад
That's what I was thinking. If a Berkey or other good filter can filter river or lake water to make it drinkable, then why do the need to change out the water every 6 months to a year. Shouldn't the Berkey take care of anything in the water? Especially when you bleach out the container, and put in bleach when you fill it with water. They say that if you have chlorine already in your towns drinking water, then it is safe to store your tap water as is, without adding any more bleach. Nothing can get into the closed container.

Thanks and I plan to buy 4 of those containers. I am so glad you put the link for the containers. Going to wait for your reply before I purchase. Like I said in my video... Please post your source for the information. And what does stay good mean? And the reason the containers are blue is so light does not penetrate. I had said that the cdc said to store at 70 F or below, which includes no sunlight, yet they still said 6 months. Thank you.

Where I live water is in short supply. I've had 40 gallons stored for 2 years. I don't want to waste it and I don't have a yard or house plants to make use of this water. If I filter this water with a Sawyer o.1 micron filter or use Polar Pure water disinfectant Do you think it will be safe to drink? Or perhaps do both, filter and disinfect? Thanks for any opinions.

Once it sets a bit it is perfectly safe to drink. Chlorine is used by municipalities to disinfect drinking water.
@shuumai
@shuumai 3 года назад
A higher concentration of bleach is for cleaning, but a lower concentration can be used to sterilize and maintain water longer, just like chlorine in tap water. I'm not sure about liquid bleach, but tap water can be agitated and aired out to reduce the chlorine. You will find multiple sources of info on the Web about that. I also know as someone who used to drink a lot of tap water. (Now I have an RO filter, mainly to remove fluoride.)
